It's no secret that I'm a huge fan of the MCU but I have to admit I like what I've been seeing from these Aquaman trailers. It looks visually vibrant, colorful and epic in scope. It's definitely offering up something we haven't really seen before in a superhero film thus far which is always refreshing. Whether or not it can deliver the goods given WB's track record is anyone's guess but I'm actually hoping it turns out decent.

Early reviews are starting to trickle in and the general consensus seems to be that it's better than previous DCEU efforts (excluding WW which I thought was decent but overrated) but is still a mixed bag and an average comic-book film. Impressive visuals and well executed action pieces are praised while a ho-hum story, one dimensional characters and some lackadaisical performances are among the criticisms. So it sounds like WB/DC still haven't cracked the complete winning formula yet but they may finally be getting things on a correct track.

Went and saw this today. It's certainly better than anything WB has offered with the DCEU so far aside from Wonder Woman. I'd say I enjoyed this one more than WW. I think all the criticisms I listed above were pretty on point. The film is visually stunning with terrific vfx work, decent action pieces and some very cool comic accurate costumes. However as a whole it all still feels a bit hollow mainly due to how uninteresting and one dimensional the characters feel. Everyone just feels there simply to serve their role in the plot and nothing else. There's just not enough emotional weight behind any of them sadly. Villains Black Manta and Ocean Master were cool design wise but again with little development and shallow motivations. Manta wanting revenge for AM killing (or rather not saving) his Father and Orm wanting the Atlantis throne and to rage war upon the surface world. Overall I liked it despite its various shortcomings. There's still a lot of room for improvement but I feel this was a small step in a positive direction for future DC films. 3/5*

The fact that this film is doing so well at the b.o. makes me wish that Solo was released in December. Typically, audiences turn-out to the theaters in December, and Solo is as good (if not better) than the films that were released in December.
