Recommended Reading:Ragnarok in Norse mythology is the end of the world. There have been several times in the comic that Ragnarok almost occurred and one where it actually did. Here's a list of Thor issues that dealt with the event known as "The Twilight of the Gods". It will be interesting to see how much influence (if any) the movie takes from the comic versions of Ragnarok considering outside of Malekith, Kurse & the Dark Elves,
The Dark World shared little in common with Walt Simonson's stories involving those characters (which I thought was unfortunate).
Thor vol 1. #127-128Classic Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's depiction of how Ragnarok will unfold.
Thor vol 1. #200Odin gathers all the Asgardians to bear witness to the prophecies of Volla who foretells the coming of Ragnarok and the roles Thor and Loki are destined to play in its unfolding.
Thor vol 1. #273-278Decreeing that if he cannot rule Asgard he'd rather watch it burn, Loki orchestrates the death of Balder in order to bring about Ragnarok.
Thor vol 1. #349-353The culmination of what Walt Simonson started seeding at the beginning of his Thor run, the coming of Surtur. Odin, Thor and Loki must team up to battle Surtur and prevent him from bringing forth Ragnarok.
Thor vol 1. #380A Gloriously illustrated issue by Walt Simonson, Thor battles the Midgard Serpent to the death in an epic showdown that spans the entire book.
Thor vol 2. #80-85Mike Oeming's six-part finale to Thor's ongoing series featured Ragnarok finally occurring for real this time which resulted in the death of Thor and every other Asgardian. This ended Thor's title for nearly three years. Thor and all the other Asgardian were eventually resurrected by J. Michael Straczynski when the comic returned for volume 3 of its ongoing series.
