Marvel officially announces CREED Director Ryan Coogler to helm Black Panther.

Quote:
“We are fortunate to have such an esteemed filmmaker join the Marvel family,” said producer Kevin Feige. “The talents Ryan showcased in his first two films easily made him our top choice to direct ‘Black Panther.’ Many fans have waited a long time to see Black Panther in his own film, and with Ryan we know we’ve found the perfect director to bring T’Challa’s story to life.”

Coogler wrote and directed his first award-winning feature film, “Fruitvale Station,” in 2013. Most recently he directed the critically-acclaimed “Creed,” which earned Sylvester Stallone a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture.

Quote:
The first dailies we watched showed a hooded Nakia (Lupita Nyong'o) using martial arts to sneak up on and take out some soldiers as another large group of troops are engaged in a firefight. We then saw the Dora Milaje sailing to Warriors Falls for the king’s coronation. There was drums, music, singing and dancing on the boat. There was the following playful exchange between Gurira's Okoye and Kasumba's Ayo: "You look good.” “You look better.” “I know.”

The next shot was of a dancing Nakia, who is part of a border tribe, and her party also on their way to the king's coronation. (It should be noted that both boat scenes were shot on a set in Atlanta against a green screen. The magic of cinema will make the viewer think they're sailing down a river in Africa!)

We then saw T’Challa (Boseman) making his entrance to the Warrior Falls, two different angles of the same sequence following T'Challa as he steps out from a ship and into the water. He's shirtless with his chest and shoulders painted, and he carries a ceremonial weapon. Traditionally garbed Wakandans cheer for their new leader in the stands above him. We then saw Forest Whitaker’s character Zuri approach T'Challa in the water and declare, “The prince will now have the power of the Black Panther!”

We also saw a shot of a SUV being flipped on a street at night during a chase scene, followed by a scene of T’Challa, flanked by the Dora Milaje, visiting his sister at the Wakandan Design Center.

The next dailies we were shown were from a sequence set in South Korea. The whole thing had a very James Bond vibe to it as we saw T'Challa at a casino shadowing arms dealer Ulysses Klaue (Andy Serkis, reprising his role from Avengers: Age of Ultron). Martin Freeman's Civil War character, government agent Everett K. Ross, is also there and has a scene with Klaue.

Ross teases Klaue for arriving with such a large group. “You’ve got quite the entourage. You got a mixed tape coming out?” Klaue doesn't seem to get the joke and appears to take it literally. We then saw a fight break out with T'Challa, not in his Panther suit, engaged in hand-to-hand combat with some goons as gunfire makes casino patrons flee.

Interview excerpts:

Chadwick Boseman

On Black Panther's Mindset At The Start Of The Movie wrote:
It’s shortly after Civil War has ended so he’s still in mourning. There’s a guilt in terms of taking the throne. There’s a feeling that he wishes that his father would have been alive to see it, if he would have given up the thrown for being too old. That’s the ideal way. His mindset is one of guilt and unsureness because he doesn’t have [his father] there. Generally, there is unrest because there’s no leader on the throne. We’re dealing with a similar thing right now in this country. Just because a person was elected doesn’t mean everybody agrees with the things he’s going to do. Having to make the first decisions … what do you do first? What do you choose to do that’s going to get everybody on your side? It’s a political drama essentially.

On Killmonger And Klaue's Roles In The Movie wrote:
I can’t really say. Klaue is the real villain. I can say that I identify with Killmonger’s character. It’s going to be a fun character. He definitely has a different point of view. They are polar opposites. A superhero movie is only as great as its villains. I think they both provide a piece of that. You have Wakanda, which is an isolationist society, Klaue has entered that space and knows more about it than anybody else. Because of that, he is a threat. Not to mention that he’s accessed this gift that could also be a curse to the rest of the world.

How Vibranium Will Be Used In The Movie And Klaue's Mission wrote:
A lot of times when we talk about Vibranium we talk about it as if it’s, like, nuclear. It’s not a nuclear weapon but with the flexibly and versatility of it, it can do a lot of things. The fact that he has accessed that and has the mind to use it for evil is the key thing. Most people don’t know what it is and what can be done with it. He is the Osama bin Laden of the movie. He’s out there, and you have to go find him because he’s coming back at some point in time.

Very solid movie but I don't feel it's the masterpiece many of the reviews are claiming.

The art direction, cinematography, costumes, cast and music were all standouts. The film has some very unique and beautiful imagery.

If there's one area I feel Ryan Coogler could improve on if he returns for a sequel would be the action set pieces. They were not bad but I just didn't feel they were anything that we haven't seen before and the hand to hand fights were a let down and lacked a certain intensity and ferocity. Winter Soldier still holds the title in that department. The final fight between T'Challa and Killmonger was also rather tame and the CG on the panther suits was kinda spotty during this scene. I did get a kick out of armored rhinos stampeding through the final battle though.

One thing I was unclear on was the whole Killmonger/Klaue subplot. If Killmonger was always intending to use Klaue to get into Wakanda, why not just kill him to begin with? What was the whole point of stealing the old vibranium axe from the museum and then breaking Klaue out of CIA custody only to kill him right after that? I'll have to pay closer attention to this on the next viewing.

I also don't feel Killmonger was as great a villain as is being proclaimed. Yes, he had more of a sympathetic background and motivation but I didn't find the character all that memorable overall. Michael B. Jordan gave a good performance though. I was kinda more disappointed that they killed off Klaue to be honest. I liked how bonkers Andy Serkis portrayed him.

No mention of the Soul Stone. However given the huge siege Wakanda is under in the IW trailer there's still a chance it might be hidden there, unless Thanos just wants to take Wakanda out due to its huge supply of vibranium. While I think it's sort of ridiculous the possibility of three stones being hidden on Earth it would make sense for the Soul Stone to be buried in Wakanda given that the purple heart shaped herbs grant the panthers the ability to commune with past panther souls. The herbs may be imbued with some of the Soul Stone's power. We'll see.

Despite my minor quibbles it's still a very good film for T'Challa's first solo outing and another fine addition to the MCU saga. Get out and see it.
