this is the real movie pitch trailer that sold the concept to the studio. Apparently the story is set on opening day at the new park. Then all hell breaks loose and the dino's escape to the mainland.

This footage does not represent the final look of the dinosaurs or the actual quality. It was just a pitch trailer.

Other sources say that was just a game trailer and not related to the film project... and shown at Star Wars Celebration Europe of all places. Also, apparently the studio delayed the project so Trevorrow could concentrate on a rewrite of the script with input from El Spielbergo.

Trailer with a familar score slowed down to evoke mood and dread, very "there are no strings on me"-esque...

I'm looking forward for the JW score as Michael Giacchino is the composer and he as some good ideas about how Williams works his magic. He has written scores für Abrams STAR TREK movies and STAR TOURS II.

I'm not sure how I feel about the trailer. It hit all of the beats that Jurassic Park III hit for me. Those aren't great beats.

I love Chris Pratt but his casting doesn't feel right to me. I already get that "bleh" summer blockbuster feeling.

EDIT: The more I watch it, the less interested I get. It's a very, very poor trailer.

It lost me at the raptor racing/posse.

The points it hits seem so cliche. Ugh.

This trailer and premise reminds me exactly of Jaws 3D, in all the BAD ways.

I might even be able to overlook some of that crap but when I saw the friendly velicoraptor posse at the end I lost it.

Really disappointing.

If Chris Pratt hadn't gotten famous from GotG I have a feeling this trailer wouldn't be getting half the positive hype its getting from some people.

New TV spot getting more love. Has the world gone mad or I am seriously missing something here? Do people even remember the original JP and how fucking incredible that movie was that they seem to be holding JW to this piss-poor standard of average summer blockbuster fare?

There's literally nothing about this movie, except the fact that it takes place on Nublar, that has me excited. The cast looks out of place, the CG looks worse in 2015 than it did in 1993, it's shot like a B-movie, and the tone doesn't feel intimate enough to be scary.

I'm obviously going to see it as I'm a sucker for this brand and summer blockbusters, so I really hope I'm wrong.

This franchise has always been B-movie fare to me. Actually, the grander scale of what we've seen so far of JW makes it seem more operatic, grand and less like the small-scale approach of the first three entries (i.e. unfinished park in JP, derelict site in TLW and JP3). Maybe the last act of TLW is an exception.

How serious and profound can you get with dinosaurs? It's always been primarily about the thrills and chills of these terrifying beasts. Pure B-movie goodness despite how suggestive of loftier ambitions some of John Williams' amazing though somewhat mismatched score may lead you to believe.

The park can't open soon enough as far as I'm concerned.

The first film took itself very seriously. By the second and third entries, yes, the series had devolved into monster movies.

There's also Raptor Red. :P

I meant in film. Usually takes a predominantly action/horror-oriented direction.

And for all the flak that TLW gets, that movie BLEW MY 11-YEAR-OLD MIND back in '97. Consequently, I listened obsessively to its soundtrack, read the entire Crichton novel and scoured magazine racks and the early internet for even a morsel of fresh imagery from the film, post-viewing. The only other movies that played so filthily upon my young, pre-pubescent mind like that were the Star Wars films.

Couldn't be more uninterested. I don't read danger, wonder or excitement in any of this. I see mediocre CGI monster movie with canned summer blockbuster action score. This could just have easily been a trailer for Turok or GI Joe vs. dinosaurs.

I'm still trying to process my full thoughts about Jurassic World but this much is true: they don't make movies like they used to.

And as a huge - HUGE - fan of the original, not a single event of planned nostalgia landed for me. The best thing I can say for it is if you like the GI Joe and latest Transformers movies you will be all over this.

If it didn't carry the "Jurassic" brand it would be a flop.

I've heard there is a theme commenting on the state of today's movie spectacle. I just can't bring myself to see it in a theater, however.

Fuck ya'll! :)

Of course, nothing can top how special the first JP was and is. It would be an impossible, futile effort. JP is pure alchemic filmmaking of being on the threshold of a new age of cinema under the command of someone preternaturally in tune with the power and anatomy of great cinema. Along with the inclusion of that critical and indispensable ingredient of, despite what I said in an earlier post, John Williams. Don't get me wrong. I love '93's Jurassic Park. Wore that VHS tape the fuck out. However, I often see a tendency to get overly precious and rosey about the past (certain dialogue that smacks of a screenwriter's scientific posturing; poorly aged CG; stale TV production-like cinematography; all manner of practical and visual effect limitations and incongruities) at the expense of allowing something more current and fresh to have a chance. Well-treaded ground on a Star Wars board.

This film is a good enough companion to the original. Deftly directed and guided in the writing by this very talented newcomer, Trevorrow. It's marvelous, thrilling, charming, nostalgic, tight, satirical and above all, totally reverent. A wonderful time at the theater and seeing this in a crowded one, with all the laughter, applause and cheering in all the right places, made it all the better. Damn fine show!

I probably wouldn't take anyone younger than 9 or 10. Some pretty gruesome death scenes and intense man-on-dinosaur gun violence. Also, the raptors are, as usual, pure nightmare fuel. But nothing a kid couldn't handle beyond those aspects. However, this is all coming from someone who doesn't have any experience raising any youngins.

I enjoyed the hell out of this. I found it much better than The Lost World and JP3.

At first I was irritated by Bryce Dallas Howard, but by the last act, I was ready to lick her sweaty boobs. :bunnys:

OK, here goes.

I thought the marketing for Jurassic World was somewhere between uninspired and awful. There was nothing wondrous, magical or awe-inspiring in any of the imagery, and the characters looked downright embarrassing. My expectations were very low but I still had the slightest tinge of excitement and hope as I listened to John Williams' epic soundtrack during the day.

If you're a millennial you don't know what it was like being in the theatre to see Jurassic Park when it was released. I'd argue you don't know what it's like being in a theatre when the audience is legitimately shocked, awed or surprised by anything seen on screen. Everything looks the same since visual effects have been democratized. It's rare for filmmakers to rely on practical, cleverly staged tension anymore because it's easier and cheaper to resort to CG. The world has changed and the truest message Jurassic World delivers is how unfortunate this trend in moviemaking is. Unfortunately for Jurassic World it's a willing participant in this trend, making its entire message seem completely hypocritical.

To the movie:

There was a moment, maybe 2 minutes in, where my inner child was brought back. It was the scene where the little kid (I honestly don't remember most of the characters' names because of how forgettable they are) is in his bedroom with all of the dinosaurs on his shelf. I was that little kid many years ago. I think that was the last time I felt anything in the movie.

Let's get something out of the way: eye candy does not equate to wonder. Wonder can include eye candy, but they are not the same thing. There is plenty of "cool" eye candy in Jurassic World like the neat visitor's centre, the gyrosphere and the monorail. The dinosaurs? Your eyes will not lie unless you let them: the dinosaurs in Jurassic World look FAR BOLD BOLD BOLD less realistic than they did in Jurassic Park. You are a liar or a moron if you think that anything in Jurassic World looks as real as the T-Rex attack in JP (side note: the Rex in JW is supposed to be the same Rex from JP - could have fooled me since the 2015 version looks like a cartoon).

Now this is not just the fault of ILM (although I do not believe the "A" team worked on JW); it's a directorial problem. The dinosaurs aren't shot in a way that hides the limitations of even the best CGI and the results are catastrophic. If you look at the Indominous Rex and know that it is a CG creation then any tension or horror it supposedly creates feels fake. And guess what? The actors aren't fooled either: they act like they're surrounded by a bunch of nothing. Pratt fares the best, but the raptors still mostly look like cartoons, especially since we've seen them look real before.

Great characters and a decent story can overcome mediocre CGI, but JW has neither. The script is just no good: it's a mash between the original JP and Transformers with forced hero moments, overly scripted "tension" scenes, monologuing and needless subplots. Why do we care about the parents' divorce? Why do we see scenes of them at a lawyers' office? Why are the parents in the movie at all? Why is there a subplot involving Pratt's character and Ron Howard's daughter having dated once? Why is Henry Wu a moustache-twirling villain all of a sudden? Why is INGEN a paramilitary organization? Why the fuck does any of this have to do with GENETICALLY CREATED DINOSAURS IN AN AMUSEMENT PARK. It's all just very needless and messy and mostly boring. As a matter of fact, the most interesting concept is the controversial raptor training stuff. I think that idea works and Pratt sells it well. I just don't think there's enough of a movie around it to make it hold up.

How about the action? I mean, I guess it's good but it's no more special than an XBOX cutscene or your stock summer blockbuster action scene. If that's what you want from a Jurassic Park movie and that's good enough for your 15 bucks, well then I guess I feel sorry for you.

Notably terrible was the editing. You get one scene of the kids at the park (which involves one kid getting excited or complaining about not being able to see, and another kid creepily staring at teenage girls in the most awkward of ways), another of people in a stock control room saying nothing particularly interesting, Pratt and Kingpin arguing about gibberish regarding militarizing raptors, and repeat. That's the first hour. It doesn't get any pace going until the last 30 minutes and by then I was paying more attention to taking the biggest piss of my life than JP: Age of Extinction.

I want to admire excellence. I want more Jurassic Park's, Winter Soldier's and Fury Road's. If I'm looking for mindless action that makes no sense with paper thin characters I'll....well, I can't look to the Fast and Furious movies anymore because they've actually started to become good, so if Jurassic World is any indication I guess I'll have to look at our most cherished and celebrated franchises to watch a fine wine turned into piss.

My lasting thought leaving the theatre: The Lost World suddenly became "underrated."

I really didn't care for it. If this didn't have 1) the "Jurassic" brand on it or 2) have such low audience expectations this movie would be trashed. It's loud and dumb for a sci-fi movie that's a sequel to a movie that at least TRIED to take itself seriously. Everyone in this is a cartoon character. Claire is an uptight workaholic who the movie views as "bad" and "wrong" for rejecting society's gender constructs of femininity. Owen is a tough-guy who is always right and never makes a mistake--always knows what's going to happen 3 seconds before everyone else. The villains are more poorly realized than the CG dinos.

I truly feel that ILM's effects work in the early T2, Jurassic Park-era, under the supervision of Muren, was successful because it relied more on artistic license than technical accuracy; or used both effectively. Sure, the dinosaur's skin textures and teeth are technically more accurate than in 1992/1993, but they lack the Romantic, artful look they need to trick the audience's eye. And the under-use of the franchise's landmark animatronics is a huge miss. Was there even a full sized Indominous Rex head built for the characters to react to? A foot? A claw?

How could they cast Chris Pratt, a very likable Everyman as a generic action dude? I'd bet that character looked great on the page. A throwback to an 80s-90s action star dropped into a modern blockbuster. He should say lines like "You're lookin' at him, kid." while lighting a cigarette. Pratt was miscast. Or they didn't adjust the character enough to match what he brings as an actor.

There was way too much dinosaur-human social interaction and not enough tension and dread. Why would the I Rex and three velociraptors face a group of four healthy white people ripe for eating and contemplate their next move. If they're the instinctual, predatory animals we've been told to think they are, that Indominous would have no idea to wait until the right moment to eat some people just because their death would have more dramatic weight than other park visitors.

I keep reading that this movie is capital-F Fun and that makes up for whatever was lacking from its story. I do not get this. Big, dumb fun was never Jurassic Park. And Spielberg insists his first movie was not a monster movie. Each kill in Jurassic Park (not The Lost World) was dramatic and was never treated as an excuse for "fun" dino eating. Fury Road and The Winter Soldier, to an extent, proved that a Fun movie can also be a Good movie.

Jurassic World was a huge missed opportunity. A decade in development and this is the final product?

I agree with everything you wrote.

I just don't think there's an interesting story to be told after Jurassic Park. Spielberg pressured Crichton to write The Lost World, and that wasn't a work of inspired fiction (not to mention it unnecessarily retcons key things about Jurassic Park). People seem to forget that beyond the wonder and amazement of seeing dinosaurs wreck stuff, every character in that movie was fully realized with a strong and unique point of view. The characters in Jurassic World say and do stuff that the plot wants them to, which is either stupid or bland exposition. I can't get behind that just because there were some neat scenes of CG monsters fighting each other. The lowest common denominator.

The reality is that not every great blockbuster needs a sequel. Look at what happened with Jaws. Are we dying to know what happened to ET? We don't need more Indy either. It's not entertainment, it's just becoming uninspired and depressing.

Just leave well enough alone.

What's interesting about that is a sequel to Jurassic World will have to go in a different direction. The JP formula of "Ooh, ahh" followed by terror and survival surely can't be done for a fifth time...can it?? I'm assuming they'll have to tweak it to include human ex-military InGen bad guys with militarized dinosaurs. Will that affect the series going forward?

Masrani bankrupt and Claire on trial? Pratt sent out into the new lost world of Isla Nublar to do...?

I definitely got a strong Aliens vibe during the scene with the Troopers in the woods with their helmet cams and life support monitors.

I told a friend of mine that this movie was basically "Jaws on Steroids," but then I remembered that I had said that exact same thing back in 1993.
