Interesting quote from Robert Redford concerning his role in the film:

[spoil]"I think a career requires a certain amount of reinvention. If you get caught in one track I think that can be dangerous. Success has a dark side to it. you want to be careful if you’ve had success at something, that you not try and follow it by just duplicating it. That’s why I’m doing this Captain America thing. I like the idea of playing a villain I did that just because it’s a different thing for me to do.”. [/spoil]

This had started some interesting speculation that [spoil] Redford's character could be Alexander Lukin or possibly even Red Skull in disguise. In either case it would mean that S.H.I.E.L.D's upper management has been infiltrated. If it turns out to be Skull it would a decent way to connect S.H.I.E.L.D's plans to create more Tessaract powered weapons.[/spoil]

My interest in this film just went up a notch.

There's been a lot of set pics popping up lately from the current Cleveland shoot. Most relevant is our first look at the Winter Soldier himself (complete with bionic arm!). The scenes being filmed are no doubt those depicted in concept art of Cap and WS clashing.

Update: Various other set photos from the Cleveland shoot including:

shots of Cap's new uniform, Falcon flying with backpack, Widow & Cap kissing, Widow & Falcon getting arrested and more Winter Soldier fisticuffs.

That's some sick artwork right there. :heavymetal: I love Ryan Meinerding's work.

Regarding the suit in the artwork:
[spoil]Rumor is that Cap dons his WW2 era uniform again. The Smithsonian has the suit on display and at some point in the film, Cap breaks in to get the suit. The suit design that's been revealed already is apparently a S.H.I.E.L.D issue uniform which is not too representative of Captain America's patriotic symbolism. Plus considering S.H.I.E.L.D has supposedly been compromised I'm sure it's one reason Cap decides to ditch it for his original. We'll see.[/spoil]

Also in Cap related news, here's some images and a really nice poster for the Peggy Carter one-shot which will be on the IM3 Bluray:

Image

ImageImageImage

Entertainment Weekly wrote:
“First of all it’s a period piece. You have three fight scenes as opposed to Item 47, where we just had basically one action scene,” director Louis D’Esposito told EW about the latest Marvel one-shot. “We had five days – one more day than we did on Item 47 but I think it’s double in size. And also the visual style of it, that requires time. So there was pressure on us. I have people looking over my shoulder, looking at the watch saying, ‘Come on, you’re costing us a lot of money!’”

“Not everyone can be frozen in ice from that period,” D’Esposito jokingly continued. “So it was: How do we tell another Hayley Atwell story? It’s a year since Cap plunged into the ocean. And in our mind, we said there’s a few SSR offices. If you want to relate it to now, it’s like the OSS, the precursor to the CIA. The SSR is the precursor to S.H.I.E.L.D. There’s some satellite offices in New York and right now their primary concern is getting Zodiac. Zodiac in the books has been many many different things. We just want you to know it’s deadly, it’s important, bad guys are guarding it, and it’s imperative she gets it.”

Costume exhibit at the SDCC '13 Marvel booth. This will appear in the film as the WW2/Captain America exhibit at the Smithsonian giving more credence to the rumor of how Cap dons his WW2 era uniform again. Nice continuity detail having the USO shield in the display since the original was still buried in the ice with Cap.

Also Entertainment Weekly has a clip up from the Agent Carter One Shot which was shown in its entirety at Comic-con:

Description of the footage shown at Marvel's Comic-con panel:
source: io9

[spoil][align=left]We saw a ton of footage from this film, which really backed up the idea that it's a paranoid spy thriller as well as just a fun superhero action movie.

We saw a complete scene, which was very reminiscent of one of the best moments from Drive. Captain America gets into an elevator at SHIELD headquarters, and then Crossbones (Frank Grillo) gets in with him, with a couple of other guys, all heading for Operations. They're talking about spy stuff, but Cap notices they have their guns out. And then a bunch of guys in suits get in, heading for Operations. And there's something hinky about them, too. Someone says "**** you contract," randomly.

Even more guys get into the elevator and say "Records." And then Cap is surrounded by a ton of guys. In a small glass elevator. He's massively outnumbered in a tiny space.

Cap says, "Before we get started, does anyone want to get out?" Nobody does. They attack, and he hits emergency stop, and all of these guys are trying to kill him at once. There's a wristband which is magnetized, and it gets attached to the wall of the elevator, and then Cap's wrist is stuck in it so he's fighting with one hand trapped. He basically kicks the hell out of all these guys, using their own weapons against them. It's amazing. Eventually Captain America gets his wrist free so he can fight two-handed.

At last, it's just Cap and Crossbones, who says "it's nothing personal." He tases Cap over and over again, and Cap just keeps coming. Cap throws him into the ceiling. Cap is standing in the elevator, surrounded by prone bodies and broken glass, and he reaches down to grab his shield, with a loud clang.

We also saw lots of other footage, in which Cap and Black Widow go into an ancient SHIELD headquarters, digging for old secrets. Robert Redford, as Alexander Pierce, is telling Steve Rogers that SHIELD wants to protect people, but sometimes building a better world means tearing the old world down. And SHIELD has enemies. "You know how the world works," he says.

We see Scarlett Johanson standing in a graveyard looking sad. We also see Anthony Mackie, as the Falcon, riding in a car.

The latter part of this footage involves showing a lot of super insane SHIELD hardware, including jumpjets, the Helicarrier and various other massive vehicles, while Nick Fury and Captain America debate spy ethics. Fury says "I've neutralized lot of threats before they even happened." Cap responds, "I thought the punishment usually came after the crime." "SHIELD takes the world as it is, not as we'd like it to be," says Fury. "This isn't freedom," Cap says. "This is fear." And Fury tells Cap to keep his eyes open.

We see Cap jumping out of a jet and fighting and lots of stuff blowing up, and Black Widow kicking pretty much all the ass, and abseiling into a super tall structure, shooting in all directions as she goes. We see a bus exploding and another shot of a graveyard. And more awesome fight scenes, that we just caught a glimpse of.

The Falcon flies into an aircraft carrier while being chased by multiple jets. Captain America is on a motorcycle flying, and there is tons of kickfighitng. And then we saw what looked like the SHIELD helicarrier blowing up and crashing into the river.

And then we see the Winter Soldier, formerly known as Cap's sidekick Bucky, reach down and pick up Captain America's tarnished, burnt shield, and look at the camera with his gaze especially intense in black smeary eye makeup.[/align][/spoil]

The new suit referred to as the "Stealth Suit" by the directors on display at Comic-con:

Good interview with directors Joe & Anthony Russo in which they discuss the new suit, Cap's fighting abilities, Cap & Widow's relationship and more:
Cinema Blend

As I somewhat speculated earlier, the new suit is very much a thematic point to the film. I very much like everything I've heard so far about this one. It's definitely becoming my most anticipated of the Phase 2 films along with GotG which has piqued my interest much more since it was originally announced.

Description of the footage shown at D23 Expo:

[spoil]
The footage was in black and white, featuring unfinished animation and animatics. It’s a very rough early clip. Cap and Black Widow are passengers in a plane, bantering, talking about what they have planned for the upcoming weekend. Black Widow: “You doing anything Saturday night?” Cap: “All the guys from my barbershop quartet are dead, so, you know.”

Cap gets ready to jump out as the plane is over water. Is he wearing a parachute? Nope! Cap just flies through the sky, no ‘chute, and dives into the water feet first. Nearby is a huge cargo ship, rendered via animatic in the clip’s current state. There are many guards on the ship, but Cap climbs up the anchor chain to the deck. He silently takes out one guard, and throws his shild at another. In short order, cap runs around the perimeter of the deck, just kicking ass. At a dead run, he takes out almost a dozen guards. Some go down with just one hit.

One guy is about to pull fire alrm, but Cap throws a knife through his hand. This is a more brutal Captain America — a one-man black ops squad. There’s no dialogue in this sequence; just fighting. Cap’s fighting techniques are way more modern than the last time we saw him. He’s learned new moves; the action in general is much more hard-hitting and intense.

Finally, Frank Grillo parachutes down and helps take out one guy. Black Widow also lands on the ship, and begins shooting some of the remaining guards. Despite the setting and action, she’s still in weekend mode. Black Widow: “How about the nurse who stays aross the hall from you? She seems nice.” Cap: “You don’t have to get me a date.”

I'll post this here since it is CA/MCU related. Here is the full "Agent Carter" one-shot ripped from the IM3 blu-ray:

It's a fun little short. Easily the best of these one-shots so far.

I can't add anymore than that, TC. Looks pretty solid.

I'm going to assume that the trailer gives away 90% of Redford's screen time in the movie.

:o Wow

Thanks for posting! Looks better than I'd hoped. And that is kind of hard since I've been geeked about this from the get-go. Iron Man III's treatment of both the Mandarin and Iron Patriot, while not unduly fitting for that particular screen adaptation, really had me wondering if the Cap II production would do a better job with The Winter Soldier.

I'm not adamant(ium, lol) about them recreating the exactness of comic origin stories, but the Iron Patriot in particular could have been saved and/or more closely used the way he appeared in comics; a bastardized amalgamation of both Cap and Iron Man who was actually an evil prick pretending to be a hero. Not a randomly out of control War Machine. Mandarin, while perhaps more removed from his origins was always kinda' played out in my mind anyways so eff him.

Good to see Black Widow so heavily involved as well, if there is an Avengers-ish follow-up she needs to be in it's this one. The action and scope look great too, can't wait!

Since you brought up IM3, I have to admit I gave it a hard time initially but I've warmed up to it quite a bit since my first viewing. Hell, I even like Killian as the Mandarin now.

Back to Cap, everything about this trailer is damn near perfect. I thought the IM3 trailers were well done but this one edited terrifically start to finish. I'm surprised it packed as much as it did considering this is just the teaser. I don't even want to see anymore footage, this trailer was enough to make me want the movie right now. I also have to say I judged a book by its cover when Marvel selected the Russo brothers for directorial duties but from reading their interviews and now seeing this trailer, Cap 2 appears to be in good hands.

E_CHU_TA, Redford is still one of the bigger mysteries surrounding the film but I think he's going to have a more significant role than most are expecting. Considering who the villains were pulling the strings in the Winter Soldier comic story-line, it will be interesting to see where the film goes with it and how Redford's character factors into it. *hint*

Very impressive. It looks like the Captain America movies are the dark horses of these two Marvel Phases. Who would've thought Captain America movies would be the most interesting, with such a dimensional, likable hero, of the post-Dark Knight superhero movies? It sounded like the bottom of the barrel when that first Cap movie was announced. This looks better than IM3 and Thor 2 to me.

Visually, this may be the best looking Marvel film yet. Based on the look alone, the inner nine-year-old is quite happy. Hopefully, the film can sustain the intrigue and excitement of the commercials and trailers over the full run of the movie.

I am worried about the substance of the story. I understand the need to go the whole "fanaticism" / "you've lost site of your true self in the face of adversity" route. However, drone's and other US national security issues are quite complicated matters. Presently, I'm not convinced that the film will give this subject the full exploration it deserves. We'll see.

Description of the opening 10 minutes of the film.

[spoil]
Fade in on a beautiful Washington D.C. morning. A man named Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) is running around the National Mall when another man flies by him at five times his speed. “On your left,” Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) says not one, not twice, but three times as he continues to lap Wilson. When they finish their runs, Wilson jokes about how fast Rogers was running and they introduce themselves. Wilson knows who Rogers is and relates to him a bit because he’s also a solider. The two chat about the changes in society and Wilson recommends a record: “Marvin Gaye, 1972, Trouble Man.” He says it’s everything you’ve missed, all on one album. Rogers pulls out a notebook and says, “I’ll add it to the list.” We then cut to this “list.” “Steve Jobs,” “Star Wars/Trek,” and about 12 other things are on there. I’d report more of them but I was laughing too hard. Rogers has watched Star Wars; that half of the entry was crossed off.

Rogers gets an alert on his watch that it’s time to work. He says it was nice to meet Sam and Sam tells him if he’d ever like to stop by Sam’s job to impress the receptionist, that would be great. He laughs as a black Corvette pulls up. Inside is Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson), who rolls down the window and asks the guys if they know where the Smithsonian is. “I’m looking for a fossil.” Wilson smiles, flirts for a second. Rogers says, “you can’t run everywhere.” The ‘Vette speeds away.

Cut to the Indian Ocean where a helicopter is flying out to sea. On it, Brock Rumlow (Frank Grillo) briefs the suited-up Captain America and Black Widow that a terrorist named Georges Batroc (Georges St. Pierre) has taken a cargo vessel hostage for $1.5 billion. Why so much? This is a secret S.H.I.E.L.D. ship. Cap says he’s tired of being Nick Fury’s clean up crew. They get all the details (which includes Cap being very curious about the reason S.H.I.E.L.D Agent Sitwell is on this ship) and Widow asks Cap if he did anything Saturday night. He says “No,” because the members of his barber shop quartet are dead. She tells him if he asked out a certain girl at work, she’d probably say “Yes,” and Cap says that’s why he doesn’t ask. He’s “too busy,” he says and jumps off the plane. “Was he wearing a parachute?” asks one soldier. “No,” answers Rumlow. “He wasn’t”

We now see the full scene Marvel screened at the D23 Expo, just fully finished.

We see Cap flying through the air without his parachute and hitting the water feet first. He’s near the ship and quietly climbs up the anchor chain. Silently he takes out one guard, then another, then throws his shield at a third. In short order, Cap runs around the perimeter of the entire deck, kicking ass left and right. Some guys get kicked super hard, others just fall over the side with one hit. Just as one solider is about to pull a fire alarm, Cap throws a knife through his hand. As Russ said back in August, “ This is a more brutal Captain America — a one-man black ops squad. There’s no dialogue in this sequence; just fighting. Cap’s fighting techniques are way more modern than the last time we saw him. He’s learned new moves; the action in general is much more hard-hitting and intense.”

Finally, just as one soldier puts a gun to Cap’s head, Rumlow picks him off with a bullet. They joke about needing help. Behind him, Black Widow lands and after taking out a few more guards, casually continues the conversation. “You don’t have to get me a date,” says Cap.

On the ship’s bridge, Batroc is tired of waiting and begins to discuss killing hostages. This is intercut with Black Widow slowly flying down a huge stairwell, beating up and shooting a ton of soldiers. Cap, Rumlow and the others are set to engage the enemies but they haven’t heard from Widow. She’s busy fighting about six guys and, when she’s done, she says “Engine room secure.”

And that’s where the montage of footage from the trailer began marking the end of the footage.

The humor, action and set-up in this first ten minutes were really promising, as was the spy-thriller music. In fact, I’m kind of mad I saw it because I wanted the film to continue. Soon enough though.

Absolutely blew the doors off the Marvel Universe.

Might be their best movie and that's saying something. It's tighter than the Avengers with more amazing action and tons of references to Marvel lore. The more I think about it, I'd argue it is their best movie. It edges out Iron Man / Avengers due to its faster pace, better action, universe-changing narrative and incredibly rich references.

You should rarely believe the hype but in this case believe the hype. The mid-credits sequence was a great Avengers 2 tease. I left before the post-credits scene but I heard it's good too.

Go. See. This. Movie.

By far Marvel's best solo film. This film totally raised the bar for all future MCU films. I didn't know who the Russos were when they were hired but they seemed to have a plan and passion for the character, they did an outstanding job and them getting the nod to direct Cap 3 is well earned. The fights and actions scenes were incredible, really showed off Cap's super soldier abilities so much better than the previous films. Loved it! Can't wait to see it again!

Regarding the post credits scenes:

[spoil]
So what do you think Hydra's going to use Loki's scepter for? Maybe trying to locate and bring back the Red Skull? That's my hope anyway, I want to see him return in Cap 3.[/spoil]

CoGro, the final post credit scene was:

The one thing that annoys me to all end is that Marvel doesn't have the rights to all of their characters.

My head would explode if Magneto or Wolverine showed up in one of these movies, not to mention I think it's ridiculous how concepts like "mutants" are "owned" by 20th century fox. Marvel is clearly executing at a higher level than the other studios with these characters. It's a shame that we can't bring a proper Spider-man or Fantastic Four into the universe. It also irks me that we are going to have two Quicksilvers. It almost cheapens the character's inclusion in the films at all.

[spoil]I think Hydra's re-emergence makes anything possible. Bringing back Red Skull could make sense but Cap 2 also introduced so many other villain possibilities. I think Winter Soldier will be an ally in Cap 3, Cap will die in Avengers 3 and Winter Soldier will be teased to take over the role.[/spoil]

[spoil]I dont think that would be wise. Im not the most casual fan, but I could care less about the killing of captain america... I think it would waste the potential with Chris Evans... if they brought him back from death later, it would just cheapen the whole thing. I think it cheapened the comics, ala superman. just my .02.[/spoil]

[spoil]i say that because he has a six picture deal that would end with Avengers 3. He has also said he intends to retire from acting when his contract is done. [/spoil]

yikes... didnt know that.

[spoil]the reboot craze has diminished the weight of any on screen death for me. If they dont reboot, your probably dead on.[/spoil]

Nice: ‘Captain America’ Blows Up Weekend Box Office With Boffo $203 Mil Globally, Scores Record $96 Mil Stateside

I'm going to guess that the film has box office legs. Like The Dark Knight, the film should pull in non-traditional superhero fans. After all, it's core is like a standard action thriller.

It's interesting how elements of sci-fi, politics, suspense, comic book fantasy, martial arts, gunplay, and military drama can all find a comfortable place within the film. In the wrong hands, this could have been a very clunky movie. Kudos to the writers, the Russo's, the actors, the stunt coordinators, and the producers for exerting a high-level of quality control on the end product. Despite the open ending, the film is a very satisfying experience.

If there's to be another Captain America at some point, I vote John Walker for sentimental reasons. He was decidedly bad at being Captain America, which adds layers to Steve Rogers' tenor and raises questions about the idea of superheroes in general.

I'm not sure why we're putting Chris Evans 6 picture deal in spoilers, it's been well publicized.

For those of us that follow Marvel Lore, let's not forget that Steve Rogers is not the only man to be Captain America:

William Burnside was Cap while Steve was Frozen.
Roscoe Simons after Cap lost faith in the US government.
John Walker when the government tried to force him to be a government agent.
Bucky Barnes when Steve is assassinated post-civil war.

So, if Chris decides not to, there are tons of other stories to go to.

they already have plans for who is taking over the mantle when Chris Evans run ends. Sebastian Stan (Winter Soldier / Bucky) has a 9....NINE picture deal with Marvel. He WILL be the Captain at some point, probably after Avengers 3

I think, if they played it smart, the do the John Walker, US Agent, role, which opens up that character, an then have Bucky "save" the Captain America image and taking on the mantle. Then they redeem Walker and have him available for different movies.

There's been a few interviews with the Russo Bros. and writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely saying that Cap 3 will definitely be a continuation of Bucky's story and they also hinted that they're batting around the idea of using 1950's Cap as a story element.

They do that, they can show how the US has been trying to recreate the Super Soldier all these years...lots of characters stem from that.

Saw this the other day and was happily impressed. I had read a number of reviews before going but tried to remain open. Despite my lifelong fixation on the characters I feel like I have been able to remain critically neutral when it comes to the Marvel films. I have always wanted to like them, but I haven't liked every single moment and some of the glaringly ignorant parts are not lost on me. Which makes me think I'm succeeding in the neutrality bit.

That being said, the main criticism I read before going in was that this film was "too busy" and "too big", I even read that it was trying to be "bigger than the Avengers" visually and thematically. The drone/Hydra/real-world NWO/security vs liberty argument/connection was said to be distractingly ham-fisted into the story and basically un-fit to be handled in the scale of a 'comic book movie'. I read that the emotional connection between Cap and the Winter Soldier was thin. While I tried to remain neutral, these things were on my mind.

And five minutes into it I completely forgot about all of that until the lights came on, post-credits second-scene. The action, wow, haven't seen a 'fighting' movie like this in a long time. At the end I felt like I had watched the biggest budgeted, and most interesting martial-arts movie I had ever seen. The overall decimation of SHIELD was a bit much, not badly so, but I was surprised they really thrashed the organization as thoroughly as they did here. I liked it, hell I might go see it again.

As far as the main criticisms I read before going in, I didn't get the sense that this film tried to be bigger than the Avengers, it was massive but not on that scale. And the security vs liberty argument was fully appropriate for the character, and for it's audience. Captain America has a long history of disagreeing with the government, and I was pleased with how that was handled here. I think the Cap/Bucky story was handled well also, but I admittedly got a bit teary-eyed like a little sissy when he was talking to an aged Agent Carter. So emotionally, nothing in this film felt campy, or forced to me. Were those reviewers just hoping for more? Perhaps, but it felt 'legitimate' to the story we are shown.

I could be off about most of the above, but the action alone made this worthwhile for me. It was a lot of fun to watch.

I know what you mean. Even in hindsight, it's difficult to find a flaw with the film. Overall, each scene seems necessary and as well as excluded as could be for this type of genre.

My only vexation is the lack of final resolution for the story. It seems that the Marvel films function more like high-end TV shows than traditional Hollywood blockbusters.

Just saw this... thought it was great, even better than the 1st one. The carriers blasting each other was awesome! I could watch 5 more minutes of that.

Am I the only one that thought Scarlett looked a bit rough? the freshness was GONE!

Not denying her beauty by any means... just thought she looked aged in this particular movie
