I think David went a bit off script with that call. There is always the weaponization aspect of Weyland and maybe he thought some sort of frozen alien for the trip would be interesting to the company. I dont think it turned out the way he thought it might.

doesnt the mural (gieger) on the wall prove that the engineers have seen some sort of "alien" before?

Maybe. I think the mural is largely meant to be a recognizable image for the audience's behalf. It says "warning bad Alien-type stuff is about to happen." Regardless, it’s a wonderfully ironic image: the destroyer and surrogate for selfishness posing like the Christian savior who sacrificed himself for humanity. It really gets to the heart of what the film is about.

My biggest question on gender isn’t related to “Deacon.” If humanity is derived from the Engineers, where are the female Engineers?

Regarding David and the poisoning, I think he was trying to speed things along at Weyland’s behest. Holloway was a guinea pig to see if the black syrup netted positive (not negative) side effects.

Who created the Engineers? Wink

It's great that this film has people thinking.

Fifield, what he was originally suppose to look like as well as the Xeno and squid thing.

Creature design artwork above.

Also, here's a pic from a deleted scene.

There were originally 3 Engineers at the beginning sacrifice. Notice one is much older.

Here's storyboards of that extended scene:

Here are some production set photos of the Engineers and their suits in detail: dropbox.com

They're apparently bio-mechanical. Like the Borg but religious.

The BluRay is suppose to have the original script where it more directly linked to Alien, as well as 20 minutes of deleted scenes including a longer take on Shaw's fight at the end. She originally fought and worked over the Engineer with that axe but Ridley thought it made him seem too weak so the whole fight was cut!

A friend of mine told me tonight that he has always found the "biology of Alien to be rather far-fetched and hard to believe."

So I showed him this:

That "Deacon" ending looks like something David Fincher would shoot (ironically). It is so different stylistically than the rest of the movie

Nice video. I like the one about the interuterine canibalism of tiger sharks. There is a heartless genius to biomechanics. Rawr.

Thanks for sharing!

I wonder why they cut out the other Engineers from the opening?

I find the contrast of appearance between the Engineer at the beginning and those later in the film interesting. The one in the beginning (and those in the deleted shots) with their pristine robes seem like they could have a religious and spiritual nature. The act of the Engineer drinking the liquid seemed very ceremonial and like a right of passage (even more so in the deleted shots and storyboards).

The Engineers in the holograms and the one awakened from cryo-sleep appeared very militaristic in nature with their armor-like exo-suits, bio weapon machinations and malevolent behavior. The ship in the opening was also a more classical saucer shape design as opposed to the derelict.

Could there possibly more than one sect of Engineers? Those that perhaps want to seed life throughout the universe through self sacrifice and those who want to eradicate life using biological warfare. Probably just reading to much into it. :whateva:

That's not too incredible at all. You don't have to look too far to see this sort of dichotomy elsewhere.

Very cool.
Here is another link to some of the deleted/extended scenes:

http://www.itsartmag.com/features/prometheus-deleted-scenes/?utm_campaign=prometheus-deleted-scenes&utm_medium=rss&utm_source=rss#.UE9aiq4xMpU

The longer scene between Vickers and Weyland reveals that they do know that there is a creature in the medical pod room. She says "look at that thing squealing next door..." Which is actually a good thing, since one of my problems with the film was that nobody seems to know or care what Shaw had extracted from her monkey box.

I've seen the above fight. that's an axe that she's just burried into his side. She really messes him up good with a few chops to the calf and side, blood squirting everywhere.

also saw the full scene where he talks as he's getting out of the coffin and kills David. I'm left to wonder why Scott took all of these scenes out because they, along with others, really add to the movie.

I saw that and most of the other deleted scenes, too. Cool stuff.
I don't know if that whole fight scene was necessary, but the moment when she downed some vodka and shot up some more pain killers might have assuaged the idiots who couldn't understand how she seemed to not feel much pain in the last act.

deleted scenes can be viewed here:

http://www.sockshare.com/file/B0B569A1F19AF2DB#

this includes the new opening with several Engineers, discovering their first mini-snake alien in the tunnel, the alternate designed "alien Fiefeld" attack, and a new ending where she retrieves the android's head and decides to go to "Paradise".

the editing decisions in this movie confound me. why did they cut so many interesting scenes out of this film??

I agree. Peter Weyland's final words for the awoken engineer is very insightful and thematically rich. Shame it was cut.

Wow! The Fifield attack scene is a million times better and creepier in the cut scene. And the line "our first alien" is awesome. I don't get why that was cut. That extra scene of finding a growing worm would have only added about a minute to the film.

Some of the cuts made in Prometheus truly have me stumped.

I've read that people are already working on cuts of the film with these scenes added back. It will be interesting to see how this plays through a complete viewing with the new Fifield scene, talking Engineer, Engineer attack and extended ending.

It's beginning to look like it was less the writer's fault as it was the editor and Scott himself that ruined this film!

I haven't seen this film yet - completely forgot about it until I read through this thread the other day to be honest - but I'm quite looking forward to the blu-ray now.

Thundercracker has touched upon the most interesting aspect of this for me - by holding back on what we actually learn about the Engineers for the final cut, the onus is on us to decide why it is the people that created us might also want to destroy us.
And the instinct is to presume humans didn't turn out as planned/have f**ked up/have done something to piss the Engineers off etc... to presume it is all about our point of view.

But the truth is - if we have changed over time, so might they. For me (again, without having actually seen the film) its inviting us to look at where we came from, and where we are at now as a race... and then imagine, do the Engineers really need any kind of motive instigated by us to have changed their beliefs so drastically over time? Do they/should they necessarily all think alike and act alike anyway?

Fantastic point. I hope some of the commentary or interviews on the Blu Ray, or maybe the sequel, will shed some light on this.

I agree to a certain extent, but I don't think it was "ruined," I just don't agree with some of the cuts that were made.
