The Mighty MF Avengers Spoiler Thread

Reviews a plenty and they're all saying stupid awesome things about it.

Heard first hand that it's insane how well the movie came together. It's clearly come a long way from it's terribly produced first trailer to what will contend for "best comic movie ever" status.

I think what finally sold the movie for me was seeing Hulk save Iron Man. One of the most epic shots in the history of comic book movies. Pure Marvel awesome right there. I can't wait to see what else is in store for me in a week.

I'm not really a superhero fan, haven't followed the hype for the film, but this interview compels me to watch it now.

Just returned home from watching Avengers...what can I say...AWESOME!

I’m not a one for long drawn out reviews so I’ll just give you it straight… I was blown away by this movie! All the heroes get equal screen time & no one really outshines the other, they are all very well balanced out. The storyline is strong & while there are a few slow paced moments, when the action hots up, it more than makes up for it.

I loved the new, updated version of Hulk, he's been done so much better than the last Hulk movie! There are way too many moments to write about & im not a one for spoiling anything….there are two outstandingly funny moments...Hulk & Thor in Central Station, & then when Loki meets Hulk..."I am a god, you dull creature" (you will laugh so hard!)

Not sure how the end titles will play out in the USA but we were treated to the traditional Marvel end part before the final credits start to roll up the screen. Personally I can’t wait to buy this on Blu-Ray & I think I might just venture back to the cinema to see it again next weekend….all in all….believe the hype, this IS a must see movie...

Avengers is AMAZING!

dammit! I couldn't wait, I watched the bootleg. it's awesome. going as soon as it's out in the theaters. Hulk is fubar awesome and is apparently getting another solo movie in 2015 and tv series because of this ! This is how you do Hulk. And Hulk vs. Loki was probably the best part of the whole movie.

If there are critiques to be made, the score is run of the mill, nothing special at all. Not enough Thor doing godly stuff and a little too much Iron Man. I never quite felt they were ever in any danger. It was pew-pew and Hulk Smash and blowing stuff up and Scarlett's ass and

... dammit, fuck it, this movie RULED! HULK SMASH PUNY GOD! wwwraaagghh

It was definitely Iron Man and Hulk's movie. It was... alright. Again, I'm not really invested in these characters.

"Puny God."

This is the most entertaining flick I've seen in a while. I have to give myself a pat on the back for avoiding spoilers on this one which is why I disappeared from the thread.

The film came together very well and I don't think any director could have done a better job managing so many characters. I don' t feel anyone got short changed, maybe Hawkeye but each definitely got their chances to shine. I'm on too much of a geek high right now. There are two scenes during the credits one mid on at the end so stay for both. Awesome, epic comic movie. Now off to bed.

I've set myself up for a letdown. I have been anticipating this flick like the man-child I am since I was 7. And that was a long ass time ago. Now, finally, here it is.

Does it live up to the hype??

Oh, yes, yes it does!! Wow, just wow.

I'm on call from 5pm to 8am for the next two weeks, and strangely found myself with the whole day off today (until 5, duh). I fandango'd the movie times last night and saw the first 2D show today was at 11:50am. Timidly, and with a glimmer of hope, I drove to the theatre to see if there was a line, a crowd of children and geeks, or what. And like I wasn't a bad person, as if I were someone God didn't hate, for once fate worked out in my favor! Saw this one in a theatre with about 20 other people, no racket, no opening day distractions, just like it was supposed to happen in my mind. That never works out these days. Wow.

As for the actual film, I don't have any complaints. Individual hero screentime didn't seem uneven to me, the chitauri (not very much like their animated counterparts at all, no shape-shifting that I noticed) didn't seem 'too' weak (although I get why some may think so, it didnt distract my attention) and to me it really brought the comic-book universe to the screen in a way I didn't think was possible, not on such a massive scale. Not without making it seem like a kids movie. Which it didn't. Children friendly big-kids movie I guess. Although there was a couple who had to be in their 70's a few rows ahead of me geeking out and enjoying the film as much as I was.

Nit-picky complaint? Hulk needs more dialogue, and since when does Gwyneth Paltrow have a spankable ass? Daisy dukes? Erm, what?? She's categorized under 'whatever' in my mind, so seeing her rumpus look all 'milfy' was kind of a surprise. And having read about Scarlett's lack of panties under the suit had me somewhat distracted. But I digress.

This flick turned out to be one of few things I've seen in my old-age that actually lived up to the hype. I plan on seeing it again, probably more than once, before it departs. IMAX 3D for sure, once the crowds and 8 year olds taper off.

5 out of 5 stars. Awesome movie.

Just got back from IMAX 3D showing.

Extremely entertaining. It's very surreal to see all these mega heroes share the screen and overall it was very successful and joyous to watch. The only negative about the characterization is that the heroes were written different than they appeared in their solo films. I think it might have been mentioned in an AICN review as well, but there was a noticeable difference in the way RDJ played Tony Stark in this film. He felt much more handcuffed by dialogue that he didn't seem comfortable saying and his quips were less organic.

It all works fine though, especially if you think of the Avengers as its own self-contained series and not a "sequel" to the other Marvel movies. In that sense it feels very much like the spin-off comic series we all know and love.

I'm also intrigued by Marvel's ballsiness in introducing the more mystical and fantasy-like story lines. It's such a dramatic shift from the more straight-laced and down-to-earth solo acts that I had to remind myself that THIS is what Marvel is actually known for.

Hulk was absolutely fucking perfect.

[spoil] That was not a Skrull, that was Thanos. [/spoil]

I think it makes sense. The man that's used to doing everything he wants is now having to be a team player, so he's going to hold back on how he acts.

I wasn't spoiled going in but I had heard the mid-credits was Skrulls. I didn't pay close enough attention - thank you.

you should read this if you want to know what to expect with Avengers 2

Image

The dude's name is Thanos and he is basically a God/Titan of the Marvel universe that holds the Infinity Gauntlet. On each finger is a different "infinity Gem" which controls different aspects of reality. Space, time, mind, power, reality, and soul I believe. When combined into the Gauntlet, the wearer controls everything basically.

Thanos collects these gems, wears the gauntlet and goes about kicking each and every super hero ass in the marvel universe. And he does it all to get on the good side of a character literally named Death, who is a chick. Looks like the grim reaper but with breasts. So that's why he smiles at the cameo end of Avengers when the flunky dude says "to attack Earth is to court Death." That's what he's wanting to do! He want's to fuck death!

The next series of Marvel movies should introduce some of this a little more as it builds again to Avengers 2. We'll probably see some Infinity Gems in Thor 2. The gauntlet itself was briefly seen in Thor, which looks like this:

Awesome - thanks bear.

I remember seeing the gauntlet in Thor and it seems most logical that the Thor series sets up the Avenger story lines since that's where the mystic and fantasy elements of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are coming from.

The way this is headed, I think at some point there's going to have to be a deal to integrate the X-men, Fantastic Four and Spider-man properties in all of this. Secret Wars anyone?

Also check out the Thanos Imperative...or just read up on him and Wiki, Thanos the Mad Titan. Dood's got some serious issues and enough power to back it up.

Well, I think that's where Marvel failed in the previous movies, where they tried to make them to be too human, down to earth, realistic movies, which only turn out to be over the top laughable movies.

I'll admit that when I saw the first trailer with the group of them all together downtown, I just rolled my eyes. But then just a little bit into the movie, I was totally sold on that it could happen, that super-freaking huge aircraft carriers could fly, and what not. I think Joss did a good job of recapturing the feel of the comics and cartoon series.

I dunno', don't get me wrong I'd love to see it work out. But whenever I think Marvel Cosmic-U the whole thing steers into DC's 'Green Lantern' territory. As in 'Hot Wheels' and 'juvenille' blah-blah. It was pretty, but it all seemed like a waste of a Ryan Reynolds (where the fuck is the Deadpool movie? That would be :weed: , give it to us already!!)

The cosmic dimension of Marvels story-telling universe is so deep, so rich and colorful, introducing it slowly and not shoe-horning it in just to make an 'Avengers 2' timeline/schedule, makes more sense. A Thanos story, if done hastily, has the potential to be a little 'too big for its britches' in a way, too much too soon. Could there be enough intro-space in the next series of solo films to make a Thanos-centric Avengers 2 make sense to people? I dunno', it sounds like a stretch.

I'm not trying to be a killjoy, but I was a huge 'Heroes' fan. And what they did to season 2 of that show has made me aware that the greatest things can turn to utter crap on the follow-up run.

I also mention it because many of the credit-scenes of the Marvel films have hinted at plot points to the Avengers. Perhaps the Avengers credit-scene was meant to point to plot points in a different film, Thor 2 perhaps? Iron Man 3? I have no idea, Im just talking out of my ass here, but it seems a bit early to be teasing for the sequel when there is a lot of time, or at least ground to cover before that happens.

While I know who Thanos is and you know who Thanos is and a percentage of people will google wtf a Thanos is, the other 10 million people who went to see that movie this week might not. Will they 'get that' cosmic-dimension of the Marvel U by the time an Avengers 2 is in the works? Or wouldn't you think that Thanos' post Avengers appearance is a tease for something coming much sooner than an Avengers sequel? I do, but I'm insane sometimes.

Plus, Whedon has stated that (if he directs the sequel, and considering the number$ already they'd be on crack not to re-hire him since I read that was already on the table or a done deal or something) he wanted a sequel to be 'smaller...more intimate' sort of thing. Yeah, that doesn't sound anything like a cosmic war featuring an infinity gauntlet. Just putting two and two together folks. My guess is Thanos is the big-bad in something else.

Also, considering that weekend box-office, some ungodly number come Monday I'm sure, Disney would be insane to not just go ahead and spend the half billion it would take to buy back the rights to every Marvel character right now. Fantastic Four, X-Everything, Spidey, all of it. Since the first team outing has just made a half billion dollars this weekend, could a 'team-up' happen in the future? Could Cap travel to Asgard, have a major cameo in a Thor film? That sort of thing?

Edit: btw, what I have stated above is purely speculative BS and I will only lazily defend any of it. I say this because of the complete shock I am still in at how awesomely, in the grand and enormous sense, the Marvel U was presented in the Avengers. I could be completely, and pleasantly surprised that it all works out next time, regardless of what I think the chances of x, y, or z being 'plausible' going in are. Frankly, I'm expecting to be surprised again.

I agree with everything you just wrote.

I think it would be a great play for Disney/Marvel to buy back those properties now. If I were Kevin Feige, I'd be praying that "Amazing Spider-man" bombs.

I do have a question about the Avengers. Who was the flunky alien dude that talked to Thanos and Loki with the evil voice? He looked like a Skrull, with the pointed/carved chin. He also didn't seem to look like Loki's alien army dudes. Anyone have a clue?

also, they missed a golden opportunity by not having Tobey Maguire cast as some random dude on the street during the big finale. He could've been walking with Stan Lee and shoved him out of the way of some falling debris as it crashed on top of himself. Then pan up to Hulk raging onto whatever caused the chaos.

The hooded alien is simply referred to as "The Other" according to the Art of Avengers book. No other background info on him though.

The alien race, referred to in the film as chitauri (sp?), did not appear to be at all similar to a race of the same name cast as invaders in the 'Ultimate Avengers' animated feature of a few years ago. Im sketchy on whether or not there is a comic-book origin to the race.

In the animated feature, the chitauri were shape shifters. I didn't see any shape shifting (besides Loki, or the Hulk) in this Avengers. While I didn't know what to make of that 'disconnect' of terms initially, I didn't give a shit two minutes in.

The race that was portrayed, the armada on the other side of the portal and where they came from, I bought into the whole thing. You could have called them the spice-girls, and I would have gone with it. It wreaked of Marvel's galactic/cosmic style, and I dug it. I didn't recognize it, but it worked for me.

Also, the hooded alien appears to be completely new to me. My guess is the writers/producers/director have decided to cherry-pick what events/terms/concepts they want from the comics and alter them for the screen. Which makes sense, as long as it turns out this good. They haven't altered anything sacred, yet. They can do what ever they want if it effing rocks like this one.

Yeah, it also says in the art book that the aliens were original designs created specifically for the movie so the only relation they share with their comic counterparts is the Chitauri name.

Chitauri were originally the Ultimate Skrulls, but they have since been retconned to a non-shape shifting offshoot of the skrulls. So no shifting at all.

In bigger news ... Joss Whedon says his cut of the film was 3 hours long ... the "Assembly Cut" should be expected on DVD.

I was gonna see it on Saturday with my dad but I had an ear infection that was starting to finally clear and didn't feel very good. So I broke down and downloaded it last night.

I for one REALLY enjoyed the film. It was very well done and probably the best Marvel films to date. Hulk definitely was the best looking in this film compared to previous incarnations.

[spoil]I also loved it and laughed when Hulk threw Loki around on the ground a few times after Loki taunted him about being a dull creature.[/spoil]

Really great movie. Can't wait for those extra scenes! I would've loved to see the Peggy/Cap scene that was filmed, but only because their "romance" had the saddest ending at the end of Capt. America.

Some thoughts:

--Without Jane Foster in danger, what was Thor's role, really? I know he was trying to deal with his brother becoming a full-fledged super villain and take the Cube back to Asgard but he didn't have an arc at all. He was the only one to come out of the whole thing as the same old Thor

--If not falling out of a building, what is the point of putting the Mark VII in a flying case and having it read wrist sensors?

--Ruffalo's Bruce Banner is the first Banner i actually cared about and didn't just want to see Hulk out. was it all Whedon or was it Ruffalo or both??

I think that one shot paid more fan service than any action sequence in the other Marvel movies.

Cap deflecting Iron Man's blast was fucking awesome.

Yes it's still cool to do that - at least here it still is. I was waiting for the telesync to drop before home-viewing. A direct audio line was finally released and now playing alongside a Red Tails DVDRip in the MF Film forum.
