At last! I'm going to have to watch this version so many times to erase that shoddy effect from my head.

Even the emperor's eye slugs seem to be gone!

Very cool! I freeze-framed at :58, and yes the crossed-sabers are better and you can slightly detect a small slug-like shadow near the Emperor's right eye, but yes it is definitely different!

I'm not impressed.

I don't know why they decided to make the navigation menus all futuristic and computery. If there weren't Star Wars clips playing within the boxes, it could be the Blu Ray menu for Transformers or any other sci-fi movie. The DVD style menus were far more "Star Wars".

Showing a barrage of fast video clips after a selection doesn't make this any better - it probably makes it worse and points out how obvious it is that the menu designers didn't know how to incorporate more Star Wars into the actual menu design.

Doesn't say Star Wars to me.

Let's get real, here. The DVD menus were pretty phenomenal for the movies themselves. They all followed a standardized format, they were easy to navigate and they had ultra production values, with the environments, characters, music, and dialogue from the movie all in motion.

But they may have also been a bit too much. I prefer to just boot the movie up and have relatively static menus with everything laid out for instant bonus features. I'm at that point now. Flashy menus are outdated.

This is just the menu for one of the extras discs, by the way. I wonder what the films themselves will have for menus? I thought the DVD menus were odd. Way too much information, including key plot moments and twists.

Hmm, at least that main screen seems clear enough to navigate.

The worst DVD menus are too cluttered, you have to spend five minutes trying to see what you have just highlighted - and even worse still, have menu choices arranged diagonally. Jesus, why do they do that? Even the best DVD remotes have buttons or a joystick that only really respond well to horizontal and vertical movement. There's nothing more infuriating than a menu where you have to make several attemps to actually highlight the option you want because it is in a ridiculous place.

I don't see the point in a montage of movie transitions everytime you select an option. I'm not sure what that adds. I press a button, I want be taken where I wanted to go as quickly as possible. That is why I pressed the button.

Ideally, Star Wars menus should be based around the wealth of classic graphic designs from the film - for example, those black control panels from the Death Star would be ideal as a theme...

It's just you. The blue tint for ESB is just horribly wrong on the DVD set.

ILM had gone back and got the color timing correct with the Blu-Ray set. ILM takes great pride in their work, all though sometimes it can be dodgy. However, I think with the Star Wars films they wanted to make sure to get everything looking right for the color timing.

Thanks for posting the vids Bander. Fuck the "Snow Battle" sequence looks great, the quality is outstanding.

Here's the Pod Race segment 720p: In general, the quality of the footage is about what I expected. Though, I too, am puzzled by Vader’s now magenta saber.

The other day I re-watched the Clone Wars episode “Grievous Intrigue.” The show’s opening proverb is below. Maybe GL wrote with the film re-releases in mind?

AH must have mis-read but it's actually worse on the DVD. The footage from the Blu-Ray looks fine. The ATAT's you could clearly see the blue tint on them in the DVD version but from this Blu-Ray footage it's gray like it should be.

If he's talking about the scenery like the sky and such I think it's just because of the clarity of the remastering job that ILM did.

I'm really glad that ILM got the color timing perfect for this set for the OT and that sound mixers got the audio corrected for Star Wars (ANH) as well. I can't wait to get this set next month!

It's not really that perfect. In ANH the clothes of the Tantive IV crew still change to different shades of gray and blue between the shots and the explosion effects are still blurred and lacking detail compared to the original.

And I'm still not seeing it...

I just watched this clip about 10 times, frame by frame, and I do not see where the cockpit is see-through. There are shadow and light details that are more pronounced, but I can't see what you are talking about.
Can you post a screenshot of a frame you are referring to and point it out? I'm not being a dick, I just don't see it. I did see it in the old version (1990's laserdisc and VHS), but not here.

In this shot the lasers look pretty much the same. But in the previous one they're entirely white instead of green. Overall, I didn't notice any corrections in the Blu-Ray ANH opening compared to the DVD version.

It's the part when Luke says "steady, Rogue 2." Luke is flying by a walker and you can see through the cockpit (my monitor may be too bright, but it's still there). Check out the top left of the frame. I am not crazy (at least when it comes to cockpit transparency).

These videos look exactly the same as the DVDs.

And at least one newly rotoscope laser and starfield extension for the TIE battle in ANH ... maybe we're just talking about no massive additions like more walkers in the Hoth battle, Ben shoots first when he rescues Luke, Leia shoots first when Luke rescues her, Jabba shoots first when Han surpirses him, Droopy McCool in a metal bikini.

Then again, what did Bill George have to do with the work on the Blu Ray release? Not to be flippant, but isn't he a model maker? In a massive company? Where the work would have been done exclusively in the compositing and effects animation departments?

maybe CG yoda was the surprise the press conference was on the friday i saw them on saturday so maybe they had learned more about the discs since then? i got a feeling the audience could probably tell them the changes ;)

Maybe I just got used to the old performance, but the CG Yoda seems quite a bit stiffer than the puppet to me. Especially when he says "Everything!" The Frank Oz crew accentuated that moment with Yoda's entire body, but the CG model says it almost the same way as everything before and after.

Actually watching that documentary from ROTJ, I never knew that the Death Star model was horizontally flipped. I guess in a way it would look weird seeing it how they originally built it.

You can't do a 360 around the DS2 model; it's not a complete globe, and what you see is what there is.
