SCRIPT REVIEW: Latino Review
[spoil]

Even though, I never read the comic book, KICK-ASS has been getting a lot of attention lately. I wanted to see what all the hype is about so I took a look at the script.

What’s the verdict? It’s ok, pretty solid. I’m not gonna knock it because the draft I read is for sure not the last locked draft but they have a pretty good foundation.

The story could be very funny because the premise shows potential. The protagonist, DAVE, is very well-developed. We learn a lot about him, from wanting to find love to wanting to fit in as a teenager. He has great chemistry with his love interest.

KICK-ASS is about an ordinary high schooler who becomes a superhero and ends up enmeshed in a father-daughter civilian superhero team that is out to stop a wealthy drug lord. The drug lord's son, and the high schooler's classmate, disguises himself as a superhero to help his father catch the makeshift superheroes.

An ARMENIAN GUY who read about DAVE tries to fly with homemade wings and falls to his death. Dave is an average high school student who is interested in, but awkward around, his fellow classmate KATIE. While eating breakfast one morning, Dave's MOM dies.

TODD, MARTY, and Dave are hanging out at a comic book store and wondering why no one in real life has ever been a superhero when obscenely wealthy CHRIS D'Amico enters. Dave feels sorry for him always being alone and is going to ask him to hang out but his BODY GUARD tells him to stay away. On their way home, two KIDS steal Todd and Dave's comic books; passers by on the street pretend to not see anything. In a lumber yard, FRANK D'Amico and his HENCHMEN have tied up TRE because some of Frank's cocaine has gone missing. Tre claims that someone in a mask and cape stole it; Frank does not believe him.

DAMON shoots his daughter, MINDY (11), to test a bullet proof vest before they go get ice cream. Dave wears a superhero getup under his school clothes and tries to think of a superhero name. BIG JOHN tells Frank about someone selling coke; Chris is upset that Frank makes him leave the room. Dave trains himself for becoming a superhero by practicing jumping. On the morning of her birthday, Damon gives Mindy the knife she wanted and tests her knowledge of weaponry. Damon is interested in Frank's crime organization.

Dave sees the two Kids who mugged him and Todd trying to steal a car. He tries to stop them but they stab him and run away. He is also hit by a car. No one on the street helps him, but an ambulance later takes him to the hospital. Two of Frank's Goons question a Russian by putting him in a huge microwave; he dies before giving answers. Dave's arms, legs, and skull have been outfitted with many pieces of metal.

As Mindy walks home from the grocery store, Detective MARCUS Williasm offers to give her a ride home, which she refuses. He follows her home from a distance. In the cafeteria, Katie stops talking to her best friend ERIKA when Dave walks by. Dave can't feel it when Marty punches him in the back. Damon gives Mindy a utility belt with a feature "if all else fails."

Dave performs everyday acts of heroism. He goes in search of a cat up a tree and falls on OSCAR who is chased by THREE THUGS. Dave fights the three men while the patrons of a nearby restaurant come outside to watch and film it with their phones' cameras.

The media picks up Kick-ass' work. At school, Katie asks Dave to get coffee with her after school; Todd and Marty tell Dave that there is a rumor going around school that he is gay. At the coffee house, Katie tells him about her boyfriend problems and how she needs someone like Kick-ass. She invited him because she thinks he is gay; he decides to take what he can get.

Dave goes to meet RASUL, Katie’s abusive ex to tell him to stay away. As he beats him up, Mindy/Hitgirl shows up to help Dave finish. After Rasul is out, Mindy finds a stock of coke and runs with Dave to the roof. Damon/Big Daddy is waiting for her in the other building so she takes off, leaving Dave alone on the rooftop. Frank tells his men to get rid of Kick-ass.

Hitgirl and Damon come into Dave’s bedroom and tell him to be more careful about his trail. They can work together. Frank tells Detective Vic GIGANTE to get rid of Kickass but he says he can’t; Frank blackmails him into agreement. DIMITRI, one of Frank’s guys, is upside down inside a car in a crusher. He has just finished giving Hitgirl and Big Daddy names and asks to be released; Mindy crushes him. Gigante tells the police officers to keep an eye out for Kick-ass.

Marcus goes to Damon and Mindy’s house and looks at the wall full of drawings of Franks’ men. He remembers working with Damon as cops until Damon turned down Frank’s money and he killed FRANK’S WIFE. Marcus raised Mindy while Damon was in jail. He wanted to warn Damon about the cops looking for Kick-ass. Katie and Dave play a video game and sing to each other. Frank follows someone dressed as Kick-ass and shoots him.

Katie cries about Rasul being dead and tells Dave it’s too bad he’s gay. Chris tells Frank that he has a plan for catching Kickass. At the cafe, Katie points out the new superhero, Red Mist, who is presumably Chris. The Red Mist website is very popular, while Kickass’ is practically forgotten. Kick-ass receives a message from Red Mist asking to hang out sometime. Kickass and Red Mist meet; Red Mist says he is taking Kick-ass to take care of a stalker situation. Frank’s goons are waiting for the two to arrive. Red Mist and Kick-ass go to the lumber yard where the building is on fire; Dave follows Chris inside where they find mutilated dead bodies and quickly leave. Frank sees the inferno from afar and gets back into his car.

Frank wants to keep his wife, ANGIE, and Chris inside. Marcus tells Damon that the cops are onto Big Daddy and Hitgirl, who decide to camp out outside of Frank’s apartment to shoot him. Chris and Dave talk about getting out of crime-fighting when two HOT GIRLS stop them. Dave leaves them in the car with Chris. Frank freaks out when he realizes that Chris is gone. Dave enters Katie’s room via window and reveals his true identity. They kiss. When Chris returns home he tells his father he knows how to get rid of Big Daddy and to get life back to normal.

Because Mindy and Damon have decided to go into the apartment, they are researching the apartment’s layout. They order a piece of equipment, sees that Red Mist has written him and so dons his costume once more, even though he promised Katie he’d stop. Kickass makes the signal to Big Daddy and Hitgirl that he needs their help. Kickass and Red Mist meet him; Frank’s men break in after them, shoot Mindy down, and take Kickass and Red Mist.

A website has been set up to show what Frank’s men do to Kick-ass and Big Daddy, who have been taken to the lumber yard and doused with gasoline. They light Big Daddy on fire as Mindy (who survived thanks to her bullet proof vest) turns off the light and starts beating up people. Mindy and Dave go back to Mindy’s apartment where she packs up weaponry and he tells her to call Marcus. She refuses and goes to Frank’s apartment to finish the job.

At Frank’s place, Mindy manages to kill nearly everyone when Dave enters through the window on a jetpack and helps her finish. They go into the bedroom and see Angie when police sirens start wailing because Dave called Marcus. Dave and Mindy go into the study and fight Chris and Frank respectively. The two are victorious as the police enter and escape on the jetpack and go back to Mindy’s building. Marcus confronts Gigante about his affiliation with Frank.

Mindy moves in with Marcus and goes to Dave’s high school. Katie and Dave stay together. Hitgirl, Big Daddy, Red Mist, and Kickass spawn a huge flock of superhero imitators, so much so that it becomes everyday for people to walk down the street in costume. The Armenian Guy goes to the top of a building in an elevator. Chris has become a super-villain.

I dunno'. The comic has been pretty decent, but it has only had a couple of issues out. I like it so far, but it seems a bit early to just throw all kinds of dough into a movie about it. Still, if the rest of the arc and/or the movie end up as good as the story has been it should be worth seeing. Thanks for the info, Mr Vomit.

This seems like a Robert Rodriguez/Spy Kids with bad language and violence thing to me.

Nothing groundbreaking or original except for well, nothing.

I bought the DVD yesterday having never seen the movie and only read the first 3 or 4 issues of the comic. But I hadn't bought a DVD in sooo long and the Mrs couldn't be dragged to the theatre to see it. Plus it was on sale for $15 or some such thing, which is cheaper than actually going to the theatre alone.

I dug it. I'm gonna have to rewatch it before I can comment a whole lot, but it was a lot of fun and the action was well done. McRedmistluvvin was a bit of a casting wtf, but overall didn't distract too much. The villian was a touch weaker than I expected. But convincing. I liked it, overall. Worth the $. And there is a featurette in the special features with the comic creators which is awesome, but I wish they had subtitles when Millar is talking, because I only understand about 1/4 of what he is saying.
