It's a bit dated but AICN dug up an old David Lynch interview that I'd not seen though I'd pass the link along:

I've always wondered what ROTJ would have been like if Lynch had directed it. I understand why he decided not to, but why the hell did he then go on to do DUNE instead?

Because no matter what he did, it'd look like genius compared to how the series was taken over and finished by Frank's son?

I'm still part of the minority that actaully likes Lynch's Dune. I never read the book, but as a sci-fi fan, I thought it was well done. A lot of the visuals, allthough some of the FX now look dated, still visually captivate me. And the performances from the actors are some of the best the genre has ever had.

That said, I think a Lynch directed ROTJ would have been a mess. I liked Twin Peaks (if not the ending, wtf), and a lot of his movies are great. But 2/3rd's of them give me a fucking brain cramp. Wild at Heart has the best first five minutes of any film to date, but the rest of it makes me feel like I have a migraine.

I'm curious as to when Lucas went from knowing his limitations as a writer and director to feeling he alone could write and direct the prequels.
