Some programs save them automatically (if that option is turned on). The posting of them is what is sometimes odd. But there are good ones, too. Ones that serve a greater purpose or shed light on issues already in discussion.

No, i'll give you an example or two. I've used an auto-saved chat log to see what files I had transfered to someone so I didn't double send later. I've used them to retrieve important info that I didn't copy/paste into another document (because it was saved there already). And they're also good for quoting someone when you're arguing and they go back on their word. But, in any case, a chat log is only as useful as the subject of the chat. I've deleted plenty of the auto-saved ones because they weren't ever going to be needed.

Exactly! And I actually used one last night. I had IMed a couple phone numbers to someone, and I had to send those and a few more in an email, so I just opened up the chat log so I didn't have to look those up again. But, I still say a chat log is only as useful as the subject of the chat.

Trillian and Yahoo can save automatically. AIM doesn't although I don't know about the new AIM Triton.
