A trusted source comes through with information on the Star Wars DVD Box Set which will be released this Christmas 2007. Information may come out about it at Comic-Con. So far all what is known about the Star Wars DVD Box Set is this: Christmastime with new extras.

Developing...

Phantom Menace needs a new release as the video is pretty nasty compared to the other movies. The scenes in the Jedi Temple look like pure shit. Also, that test footage of the CG Yoda was a clear indication a new version of TPM was being prepped. If the video and audio on the OT were fixed, and considering the additional features, I'd buy it.

At Celebration Europe, McCallum and others stated that LucasFilm was waiting for the format wars to end so the Box Set will most likely be standard DVD materials. The question is if any changes were made to them in terms of special effects, additional scenes, etc.

For right now it is best just to assume that the discs are the same with new bonus materials. Waiting for new information to come in.

...even if they've tidied up the Yoda Puppet from Ep1 I'll get the set.

Even better, would be if it comes in some dinky packaging and I can finally display em all nicely.

....EVEN BETTER would be putting some decent DVD art on the front. But I highly doubt they would do that.

SURPRISE!!! Happy 30th Anniversary, everybody. ;)

Extras wouldn't be enough of an incentive though... If the films have changed at all, I'll buy it.

Awesome! Here's hoping for OT & new PT deleted scenes, new TPM transfer and possibly 04 OT errors fixed up.

I'm hoping too they release the complete score box sets along with this DVD set...that would seriously be another kick ass Christmas present...the complete scores box set and Saga DVD box set....shit ya.

By the way Thundercracker, I agree I hope they fix the OT errors...especially the swapped rear channels in ANH and the lowered music. I blame Ben Burtt on that one...fucking prick.

Awesome! I was beginning to think Uncle Georgie hated us all. Cgi TPM Yoda and some extra new goodies will make it worth buying. I'd tend to think if they are bothering putting it all together in one big expensive set, there will be more new goodness than that (like maybe a 3D-TV series or gamer preview) and hopefully some new commentary, minus a half drunk Carrie Fisher and Ben Burt's endless "sound design" rambling cracker ass.

As long as it isn't the same discs I allready have, this news rocks.

Hopefully they'll release some outstanding OT extras like the behind the scenes at ILM documentary that had footage used in the From Star Wars to Jedi video.

December could turn out to be a very expensive month, what with this and the possibility of the 4-disc ultimate edition of BladeRunner. :chewbacca: :chewbacca:

Thanks DP for the heads-up.

I've been saying for a while that it would be really dumb if Lucasfilm and Fox DIDN'T do some kind of release for the 30th Anniversary. If it is simply 6 movies in a box that say Star Wars 30th Anniversary box then I will at least be happy in knowing that the marketing department didn't completely drop the ball for the 30th Anniversary.

As far as new extras thats great news, I guess it depends on how long it's been in the works to realistically expect what kind of changes, if any, have been made to the movies. But I guess with George Lucas, one thing's for sure, there will be changes somewhere.

Comic-con starts today so maybe we will get some more news. But I am cautiously optomistic!

According to The Digital Bits, there already is some simple "throw the 6 existing DVDs in a box" release coming out sooner. I hope this December rumor is more than that:

Does nothing for me. I get tired of them repeatedly throwing out the same shit with slightly different bells and whistles.

I'll wait until they come out with something worth my money.

If they finish remastering the OT, fix the audio in ANH, give TPM a new transfer (I could give a shit either way about CGI Yoda in that one) and come up with some better extras than last time, I'll buy it. Eventually.

Otherwise forget about it.

BTW- Am I the only who thinks this set is most likely going to be 7 disc thing with the six movies, plus a "bonus" disc of shit advertisements for 3D Clone Wars, live action show, whatever the game of the month is, etc?

Yeah well I wasn't talking to you, was I, fuckface?

Haha, kidding, this just seems like LFL's standard operating procedure lately. Looking back on it, I can't help but think a remastered anamorphic edition of the original cuts released this year (rather than those lackluster 4x3 letterbox ones from last year) with some animatics, a couple of deleted scenes maybe, some vintage toy commercials and interviews and shit would probably be a good seller, it would fit the anniversary moreso than slapping yet another rerelease together and not really duplicate anything we've already got. All that and for not very much effort or expense on LFL's part.

Well, I'm only speculating here...but lets think about this logically:

LFL has Indy on the cards well into next year...given they have that bohemith to work on, can we realistically think George & Co. are going have time to stick his stamp of approval on any re-edits or CG work into a new release? I don't think so...

Ideally, yes...this would be a whole new release with extra's that we SHOULD'VE got for the OT that didn't happen in the last release...TPM, be it the weakest of the lot, SHOULD'VE got a re-release with a better transfer and CG added/replaced and cleaned up...(that goes for the Special Edition inserts that were done on the OT as well which have horribly dated since 1995) and DECENT DVD artwork, that doesn't look like it's been photoshopped together by an 18 yearold on a training course...

But REALISTICALLY, seeing this glass half empty here...we're just going to get the exisiting disks in a fancy box.

Lucas had plenty of people doing stuff with the OT during production and post-production of AOTC and ROTS so anything they'd be doing wouldn't be like getting a whole new crew together to do new stuff, my guess is that Lucas has been noodling with this stuff since AOTC.

Lucas is involved in the new Indiana Jones movie, but Spielberg is the director and principal photography isn't going to last that long so it's doubtful that Indiana IV will be a huge behemoth either in production or in post-production.

My guess is that if this turns out to be true, we will get a little tease of some new stuff but not "everything" and it wouldn't surprise me if the extras were just some crap about the Clone Wars series or the Force Unleashed.

"Everything" will be held back for either Star Wars 3D (which is a dumb idea in my opinion) or even later down the road if Lucas wants to hype digital download of films in the future.

So as the saying goes "always leave them wanting more"

MY TWO CENTS - 7/26/07 - by Digital Bits editor Bill Hunt

Now then... one other quick note this morning: The midi-chlorians are a-buzz today with word of a possible surprise DVD announcement from Lucasfilm at Comic-Con this weekend. This is certainly Rumor Mill-worthy and it remains to be seen how things will play out, but that's what we're hearing this morning here in San Diego. So keep your eyes and ears peeled for breaking news from the con. Wouldn't it be interesting if, after all the denials, Lucasfilm decided to release that ultimate Star Wars Saga DVD box set this year after all? We'll see...

Stay tuned!

Well here's hoping it has the updated TPM, corrected audio for ANH and color corrections for all of the OT. Tomorrow can't come fast enough.

I second that; although, I'm pretty fustrated that they waited till Comic-con to release this news if it turns out to be true. I doubt the news will be Blue-ray or HD DVD related, but I'm just guessing here. Anyway, it seems far too common that when they say something is not getting released anytime soon, it winds up getting released sooner than expected.

Star Wars was first promoted at 1976 San Diego Comicon and last year as 30th anniversary of Star Wars at Comic-con Steve Sansweet made the announcement that the individual discs (ANH, ESB,ROTJ) would be released with original theatrical versions at Comiccon 2006.

This year being the 30th anniversary of the release of Star Wars, maybe they held back on some kind of big announcement to make it at Comic-con this year? Comic-con is a big demographic draw for marketing/buzz.

I'm feeling kind of wierd about whatever news comes out, one one hand I am excited and on the other hand I am worried it's going to be dissaopointing.
It seems like kind of a wierd time but who knows.

George Lucas has been spotted wearing a "Han Shoots First" shirt. This certainly shows promise for the upcoming box set.

That would be something if the "Han Shoots First" shirt he was wearing lead to the inevitable, but thats just wishful thinking on my part.

So not only did Steve Sansweet say nothing about the DVDs but he really didn't say anything about anything new.
Other than they are doing a Lego Indiana Jones game.

When is Lego Howard the Duck coming out?

Perhaps this big starwars announcement at the Comic-can was just a false rumor after all. I think if there were any plans at all they would have been said at the Celebration 4 instead.

The Comic-Con announcement part was and has been speculation here and at Bill Hunt's site.

However, the individual that passed the info is in the business to know and has delivered in the past. What was passed to me was this: look for a box release around Christmas with new extras. No more, no less.

Steve Sansweet's presentation was sorta lackluster to be honest but then again we are probably spoiled from the Celebration Con's trailers and info.

Well DP if you say that your source can be trusted...well then I'll just wait until December to see if this comes true or not. We can only hope these new extra stuff will have what we want for this set and will be worth buying.

I trust DP and his source, but if no big announcment is forthcoming, or any kind of announcment then my guess is it's a repack of existing DVDs plus bonus DVD from box set and some new video game trailers.

Not expecting much.

Sansweet is just the head of fan relations for LFL, he's not the head PR guy from Lucasfilm.

If Darthpsychotic says it's gonna happen I believe him. As he said, he, along with SI and Ternian have been spoiling stuff when AOTC was in pre-production.

The only question I really have is what have they done and what will be released?

I'm pretty sure that Lucas has continued to make changes to ANH,ESB and ROTJ and more than likely TPM while AOTC and ROTS were in production, regardless of what state the DVDs were released in. The question that is really bugging me is: If there is a new box-set will it include new foootage, reworked movies, etc. or will it just be a rebox of the existing 6 movies, plus whatever extras cobbled together from existing Special Features.

From a production standpoint, the lead time to develop and manufacture some kind of "big box" like Blade Runner or one of the other types of super-box set thingies is about 2-3 months, that includes design, approval, printing, assembling, etc. That doesn't include the mastering, authoring and duplicating the DVDs. Then everything has to be insterted, etc. So best case its about 3 month production process to stores, 4 months is more realistic.

So unless Lucasfilm has been REALLY REALLY quiet about this, I don't think that the "big box" will be anything but existing movies and maybe some trailers for Force Unleashed and whatever other video games are coming out. Lucasfilm could probably even cross-promote and throw Indiana Jones stuff on there as a bonus, but I doubt they'd do that... more than likely they will sell the Indiana Jones DVDs seperately with bonus stuff because Indiana Jones movies are released through Paramount and not Fox.

I hate to say it, but my honest opinion has always been that the "original" box of 4 DVDs was sloppy and rushed to market either to combat rampant bootlegging or give in to fan demand or both. I'd rather wait another year or two and see Lucas actually sit down and go through all of these movies one last time, make whatever changes he wants to make and then be finished with it. Really finished.

What I'd hate to see is another set of DVDs (Star Wars Trilogy v4) with some minor tweaks and fixes and things added in and then another DVD set down the road with some more tweaks and fixes, ad infinitum.

Like I said, I trust DP at his word. If he says there is a box set at Christmas I believe there will be a box set at Christmas.
I do think it'll probably just be a repack of all 6 movies though.

I still, yes, want to know what Fuck-tard sat in the final edit of the remastered OT and saw pink saber-Vader and said, "Oh yeah, that looks perfect."

I love the over saturated colors of all three flicks ( Lucas wanted them to have the old school technicolor exposure) so that's cool with me, but for christ sake, fix the damn sabers already! And If I hear one more mouth breather tell me, "No, see it's the contrast on your T.V..., if you..."

Shut up.

But, if truth be told, I would simply be happy if young hot, butt-statue slave Leah did Ass to mouth. That would be very nice, and I would almost forgive Pink saber vader.
