Post subject: | Your Dream Box Set |
My dream box set...I've been thinking about this a lot after the release of Episode III. My box set would include sixteen disks. Yes, thats right, sixteen! The first six would be the original, theatrical versions. The next six would, of course, be special editions of each, complete with multiple commentaries. Disk thirteen would have "making of" features for every movie. Disk fourteen would contain every trailer and tv spot for every movie. Disk fifteen would feature every major documentary about Star Wars. Disk sixteen is basically a miscelanneous disk I threw in because I hate odd numbers. It would have things that wouldn't really fit onto the other disks, like "Star Wars - A Musical Journey", among other things. The special editions would contain fixes for all the films, not just the OT. Here are a list of alterations I would like to see. Episode I -- That puppet Yoda has to go, which as I understand it, is going. EpisodeII -- Recut, due to horrendous editing. Episode III -- Expansion of the Yoda/Qui-Gon meditation scene. -- Addition of some of the rebellion scenes. Episode IV -- Fixed sabers. -- A few CG shots of the Obi-Wan/Vader Duel. I'm not talking about vader leaping around, acting like Peter Pan and such. This scene, when compared to every other duel in the saga, stands out...and not in a good way. I would just like the fight to seem like more of a struggle than two old men waving canes in each other's general direction -- Add in more CGI space battle scenes and redo the ones that don't look particularly good. Episode V -- Fixed sabers. -- Create more Hoth battle scenes with CG. Episode VI -- Fixed sabers. *gasp* -- Once again, add CG to the space battle. -- Add in Qui-Gon to the force ghosts near the end. I also think the credits should start rolling during that shot instead the shot it does now. [EDIT] Sorry to all who read this before I got a chance to edit it. I severely messed up my disk numbering. ![]() |

Yeah, I guess I'm craaaaazy for wanting the OT's battles to be as visually exciting as the PT. |

Yeah, I guess... Um, anyway. Final versions of all the films. All relevant musical themes show up in each film (ie, Across the Stars showing up somewhere in the OT if it can be worked in, a hint of the Emperor's theme during wardroom sequence on the Death Star, etc), all visual effects issues settled (battle extensions, lightsaber corrections, maybe some old battle droids on Bespin, yadda yadda) and any other sequences added (or subtracted) from all of the films. Extras. This is what it's all really about, isn't it? I'd have about ten or so minutes worth of original photography for each of the prequels (all bluescreen and production sound) as a comparison to the finished product. Not the entire movie without CG (that'd be tough to do in the prequels in a lot of scenes), but maybe just the smaller stuff. I'd include some optional commentary from some of the visual effects crew discussing this or that. Something similar could probably be done for the OT as well. Ideally, you'd be able to toggle between a middle step with rough effects and the finished version on the fly. Solo Lucas commentaries. These have already been recorded obviously, so adding these in would be easy. A the Whole Fuckin Thing documentary that discusses how the concept of Star Wars evolved (including a glimpse of his original PT outline) and how all the little pieces, themes and elements of each movie fit together. I'd throw in a few interviews with Irvin Kershner, archival Marquand interviews (if any are around), Jonathan Hales and whatever that cowriter dude (whose name escapes me) who directed Wyatt Earp. A brief featurette comparing the style of SW movies to old serials and commenting on the similarities (and differences). Individual hour long beginning-to-end documentaries for Episodes II and III. A *serious* discussion of the music and how all the Williams themes weave together throughout the film series. A mythology documentary that examines all the various mythlogical motifs Lucas employed throughout the saga. This may be more interesting than you think because some of his references could be debated as intentional or not. Editing 101, which basically examines deleted scenes and explains why some scenes and/or conceptual ideas -- while good in their own right -- are sometimes dropped from a film. From there, we'll see a reel of deleted scenes from each movie. Also, Lucas could explain the name change from "Sido-Dyas" to "Sifo-Dyas", dropping Bail Organa from TPM, dropping the Rebel Alliance stuff from ROTS, etc. Some kind of Then and Now documentary that gets into the guts of how the galaxy changed (socially, politically, etc) from TPM up through ROTJ. This could also include the evolution of starfighter design, blaster design, etc. An in-depth discussion with Lucas about the Jedi Order worked in their heyday, a discussion about the original Sith war (none of the EU garbage) and some of the more mystical aspects of the Order. That's all I've got. |

There's no reason to extend any of the battles with CG in the Original Trilogy at this point. If Hoth or Endor hadn't been good enough for Lucas, there would have been more work done to them than matte line removal and transparency fixes. The Prequels have just tainted your view of them to the point that they're not good enough for you...which is sad. |

No. They are just fine for me. Contrary to what I'm betting you believe, I prefer the OT to the PT. However, one day I'm going to have kids. I can just imagine watching Star Wars with them, and I can imagine the conversation following our viewing of episode IV. "Daddy.....why does episode IV suck?" "It...it...it...doesn't suck." "It looked different. Why were Obi-Wan and Vader so slow." "They're old men, son." "...What about Count Dooku? he was.." "Shhhhh....It's past your bedtime." *son walks away with head hung low* ".....episode IV sucks..." "I PROMISE IT DOESN'T SUCK!!!.....you....just don't know." Haha. What I'm getting at, is that I want my child(ren) to enjoy these movies just as much as I have. The last thing I want is for them to dislike the OT. If it were just me, the OT is fine as is, but I'm not that selfish. I want future generations to enjoy these films, ALL of them, I-VI. |

I've got a question. What sort of box art would you like to see on the "Big Six" box set? Personally, I think I would like the "two hands holding the lightsaber" logo to be featured on it. Actually, I think it should be somthing better, but I can't think of anything else right now. |

I have many problems with the PT...so straight onto the OT. ![]() ANH: * Insert Senate scene showing Palpatine removing the Senate from power. * Destruction of Alderaan. * Jar Jar added to final Rebel scene's with Leia. * Rebel Senators added to Throne Room. ESB * Padme memories inserted into meditation chamber. RotJ * MAS AMEDDA and SLY MOORE added to Emperor's arrival. * More Rebel Alliance members added to conference scene and final battle. |

Post subject: | my ideal 6 movie box set |
Personally, I think the movies are great. I have pretty much given up on ever seeing the original original original trilogy as it was, but the special editions are kind of sucky and felt like : A) Round 1 theatrical release 1997 - tentatively testing the digital waters and seeing if Star Wars was still viable theatrically B) Round 2 DVDS (2004) - rushed out the door because of all the piracy/bootlegging I'll take any extras I can get and if i have to live with the movies as is I can. At the end of the day it's up to George Lucas.. BUT if it were up to me. Phantom Menace : (needs the most work) * RECUT ENTIRE MOVIE to match in tone to Ep2/Ep 3, as it stands it's very much out of place with the other 5. My suggestions to do this would be: 1. Cut out Jar Jar scatalogical humor (i.e. fart jokes, stepping in poop, etc.) 2. Cut out excessive Anakin "kiddieness" 3. Cut down Gunga City and underwater trip (doesnt advance narrative) to only stress Gungans/Naboo symbiotic relationship 4. Digital Yoda 5. Some mention of Count Dooku Attack of the Clones (overall it aint really that bad) * Re-edit film with more of a focus on dramatic tension of love story and Padme as target of assasination. (The I-Max cut was leaner and told the story alot better) * Possible mention of Sidious plans with Grevious * More emphasis that Dark side is clouding judgement of the Jedi * Do not need to see "kiddie" reactions in Boba-Fett (i.e. Get 'im dad!) Revenge of the Sith (great as is) * Qui Gonn/Yoda conversation added in to the end * Make 3 rebellion deleted scenes into one cohesive scene and stick it in there * Put back in idea that Dark side is clouding judgement of the Jedi * Get rid of Vader's "Noooooooooooooooooo" A New Hope (a relatively perfect movie showing it's age) * As much as I hate to say it, redo all effects (models, pyrotechnics, etc) digitally to match PT. * Digital enhancements to all Death Star sets * Digital Trash Monster * COMPLETE REDO of Greedo scene with digital Greedo and digital table to avoid having to cut-around the existing footage * Redo Jabba-scene (He still doesn't look like TPM Jabba) * Put in Biggs/Luke Tatooine scene * Put a FEW medium/long shots of Vader/Obi Wan duel in with digital models doing a few prequel Jedi type moves The Empire Strikes Back (perfect as is) * Redo all effecst digitally * Put in digital Yoda for medium/long shots where it is apparent that Yoda is a puppet. I LOVE the puppet Yoda, but the performance by Frank Oz was as much his voice as his puppetry, the spirit of the character does not change. Return of the Jedi (spend a bit more time with it! It feels a bit rushed and GL was suffering from Star Wars burnout at the time.) * Redo all effects digitally * Replace puppet Jabba with digital Jabba * GET RID OF JABBA ROCKS SONG PLEASE * Replace puppet Yoda with digital Yoda for all scenes (Yoda should have a really emotional death and due to the cramped set and natural lighting it really is apparent that Yoda is made of rubber in these scenes) * Put in some digital Ewoks with more facial articulation for close up shots (i.e. blinking eyes, etc) * Digital Luke/Vader doing some more prequel type Jedi moves for long shots ROTJ IDEAL END SCENE A) Luke looks off into distance, sees ghosts of Anakin, Obiwan, Yoda B) Luke smiles and turns back (existing shot) C) Cut back to Anakin, Obiwan, Yoda.. fade in ghosts of Qui Gonn, Mace, etc. since balance has been restored to the force |

All the Episodes certainly need some tweaking to better flow as one whole movie. Some decent editing and some rescoring by John Williams would make a huge difference. Here's my 2 cents: Episode I: The Phantom Menace 01. Restore the cut scene showing Qui-Gon destroying the Sith-probe in Mos Espa. It explains why Qui-Gon and Anakin are later running in the desert. That always bothered me. 02. I hope ILM really did replace the Gremlin Yoda puppet with CGI. 03. Maybe somehow add a scene that establishes Dooku as a malcontented Jedi with some concerns over current events. (It's probably too late to do this, but it would've been nice.) 04. Jar Jar didn't really offend me, but considering his non-importance in ROTS, I would trim his scenes a bit to make the fan majority happy. Too much screen time was given to a throw-away character. 05. If there's any cut footage showing more interaction between Anakin and Obi-Wan, I would restore it. Obi-Wan doubts Anakin throughout the entire film. But I wanted to see him reacting "amazed" by Anakin's Force abilities after his return from the Naboo space battle. It certainly would've clicked a little better with Obi-Wan's dialogue in ROTJ. (It's probably too late for this as well.) Episode II: Attack of the Clones 01. Lucas says this is a love story, but he removed the subtle and classy romance scenes, while the ickier ones remain in the final edit! I would restore the three deleted scenes between the lovebirds on Naboo. All were acted quite well (better than the rest of their scenes together), and help to establish a genuine attraction between the two. And it's nice to see Padme express desire for a family life. Without these few touching moments, the viewer has a hard time understanding why Padme ever falls for Anakin. AND, I would cut out Anakin's thirty-second "It's not fair!!" tyraid in Padme's bedroom on Coruscant. His character comes across a hundred times less psychotic without this whiny little outburst. 02. Fix Qui-Gon's (ghost) voice. Liam Neeson says “Anakin…”, but that's not Liam’s voice shouting "Nooooo!!!" It's distracting for fans, and confusing to the casual viewer. 03. Redo the music editing. You can tell where scenes and music have been cut and reworked at the last minute. Also, way too much music was regurgitated from Episode I. Episode III: Revenge of the Sith 01. I liked the Rebellion subplot, especially the scene with Palpy & Anakin. It's only a few extra minutes of footage, and it would certainly give Mrs. Skywalker something else to do besides crying and dying. 02. I'm part of the the club that desperately wanted to see (or at least hear) Qui-Gon's spirit on Polis Massa. I still want this probably more than everything else on this entire list combined. 03. I wouldn't mind the reinsertion of the Dagobah scene. It's not terribly important, but it's only 30 seconds long, and wouldn't hurt the film one bit. Episode IV: A New Hope 01. I think we would all appreciate the subtle addition of the Imperial March theme in various scenes, at least for Darth Vader's first appearance in the film. 02. Perfect the lightsaber effects and remove the frame jumps during saber ignition. Also fix the new 2004 edition green saber problem. 03. Restore the original shooting scene between Han and Greedo. [I know this won't change, but a fan can dream.] 04. Perhaps add a scene of Bail Organa (and/or others on Alderaan) watching the Death Star enter their system. 05. The lightsaber duel definitely needs a tune-up in light of Ep. III. George can easily add stunt-doubles and/or CGI wide shots of Obi-Wan and Vader fighting like they mean it. Actually, Ewan and Hayden could even perform the fight. I bet they would each do it in a heartbeat if asked. ![]() 06. Perhaps a softer variation of the "Battle of the Heroes" theme can be added to the otherwise silent duel. Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back 01. Restore Luke's line to Artoo, "You're lucky you don't taste very good". 02. Perhaps alter Vader's (Special Ed.) arrival in the Star Destroyer hangar bay so that it doesn't look so much like the hangar bay of the 2nd Death Star. And what's Moff Jerjerrod doing there anyway? ![]() Episode VI: Return of the Jedi 01. Restore the minute- &-a-half of cut footage of Luke stashing his new lightsaber inside of R2-D2's dome. The music is really ominous for this scene. I think it would help give Luke a bit more of an edge. 02. Polish the CGI and bring back the original song (Lapti Nek) during the dance routine at Jabba's palace. [I know this will never change either.] 03. Digitally remove/replace Greeta -- her wrinkly green costume looks really fake. 04. Restore the deleted sandstorm scene. It's the only scene in the film shot with the full-scale Falcon set. I'm kinda sentimental about the Falcon. 05. Fix Han and Lando's crappy blue-screen scene (in front of the matte painting of the Falcon). Again... I wish they used the full-scale set. 06. Maybe finally Remove the black spot from the Emperor's face/hood. 07. Polish the final space battle so it looks at least as good as the Special Edition changes for the Battle of Yavin in ANH. The ships come across a bit flat (or 2D) in some places. I think this could've been done better even in 1983. 08. Fix Anakin's schlocky ghost appearance. Anakin's head nodding & smirk are a little disconcerting. I might be mistaken, but I think his face was cut-n-pasted from his "apology to Obi-Wan" scene in ROTS. That's kinda cheap. Anakin took a 24-year vacation from himself, but returned, and died at the age of 47. I would expect for him to appear 47 years old, not 23 (as he appeared when he became Vader), AND not 77 (as Sebastian Shaw appeared in the original version of ROTJ) either. The original scene certainly needed replacing, but it should have been done the right way. Lucas could either wait two decades to reshoot the scene with a middle aged Hayden (I'm joking), or he could double his age now with the help of state-of-the art make-up. It just doesn't look right seeing elderly Obi-Wan and young Anakin (with a bobbly head to boot). That's all. |

Quote: Why would you take greatness and lower it to the level of the PT? I just can not figure that our with most of you people. You think 'UP TO DATE" effects make the films great? The OT is great because of WHAT THEY WERE , WHEN THEY WERE. Thats right, they were 1970's and early 80's! They will always be that, just as Casablanca will forver be 1942. You think the effects in PT will not be outdated in 10 years? Funny, you all that support fucking with the OT films will be the same shits in 10-15 years that wont want the PT films fucked with in anyway. How about lets not change a damn thing with the OT.
Agent Smith.... I don't think up to date effects mean anything. I'd much rather have 3 DVDs of the ORIGINAL Star Wars movies (the ones I saw in the movie theater when I was a kid) UNALTERED, AS IS. As a matter of fact, I have them on bootleg DVD and I've watched them more than I've watched the new ones. The simple fact is, George Lucas is NEVER going to release them. No matter how much people complain, they are NEVER being officially released. GEORGE LUCAS has started messing with the original trilogy by adding new effects, NOT BECAUSE I ASKED FOR IT, but because he wanted to. It's his movie. All I would ask is that if that is going to be the case, release something good, don't half ass it. And both the special editions and DVD releases were half assed. The lame CG in the special editions makes the 80s special effects look dated, and the PT special effects (just in terms of optical compositing alone) make the OT look half assed on DVD. There will NEVER be a release of the original unaltered star wars movies. They are gone. All I would hope is instead of getting mediocre improvements and half assed box sets, that there is one definitive release and then leave it alone. |

Maybe on this board. However Lucas has said many many times through out the years in interviews and that, that the Thearatical Editions of the OT are dead to him since he was never satisified with the way how they turned out due to budget constraints. He has also said that he will not spend the extra money to restore and release something he's not satisified with. I mean I'm sure you and others will say Lucas never keeps his word but I think this one thing he will keep his word on. I don't think no one will see a restored version of the Thearatical Editions of the OT as long as Lucas is alive. |

I don't know why I'm entertaining this thread with a response because it's just become a forum for bitching, but I'm bored... TPM: - Cut a few useless scenes here and there to quicken the pace of the film. I don't really see anything new being added, so you may as well hope for some editing changes. - Of course, we're going to have Yoda replaced, which is a good thing. - Tighten up the music editing. It doesn't need to be rescored. All the material to fix this problem (which is mainly during the final battle) exists already. As it stands, TPM has the tightest score of the PT by far. - Special Features: Give me everything you have, and I know you have at least two discs worth of extras. Give them to me. All of it. Now. AOTC: - Firstly, the film needs to be re-edited. The pacing needs to be adjusted. I would love, and I mean love to have some scenes re-shot with better direction for greater impact, but it's not gonna happen so we're going to have to hope again for some editing tricks to fix the gaping holes in this film. - Fix Digital Yoda where need be to match the efficiency of ROTS Yoda. - Most of this film needs to be re-scored. It's by far the worst of the saga. Johnny needs to get back in the studio and really give a newly edited cut the full treatment. There's no life in the music, save Across the Stars, which in the end hurts the impact of the film quite a bit. - Special Features: IBID with Phantom Menace. I want separate commentaries as well for all films with John Williams, more actors and maybe a guest commentator - Spielberg maybe. ROTS: - I think the consensus is that there isn't much wrong here save for a few scenes that could have been better directed. I'd maybe re-edit a few parts to drive the impact home more, but that's wishful thinking. - Add the Qui-Gon scene. I personally think the rebellion scenes would slow the film down. It's probably the best edited of all the six films, easily the fastest pace....don't ruin that great job. - Noooo! should probably be fixed for the sake of a billion bitching fans. Maybe add more anger to it and some more CG destruction of the facility. I also think that the Nooo should have been a close up with Vader's arms frailing in the air for a second with a quick cut to outside the lab where we get reactions from stormtroopers as the entire facility shakes before our cut to Naboo. - Sound editing. The clown that mixed this film should be canned. George, I'll be happy to do the job for you. This task also needs to be done throughout the saga re-release. poor job here. I blame Ben Burtt. - Music. Music. Music. At best, it's great. At worst, it's disappointing. All in all, inconsistent. Eliminate all past music cues. Rescore the film where need be, especially during the Opening Cruiser sequence and Anakin's march/pre-montage. It would be nice to get the Death Star motif from ANH in there somewhere and the blend the prequel themes more seamlessly (ie: Anakin's theme is essentially absent from the film). -Extras: Ibid. ANH: Fix lightsabers and the rotoscoping. All effects shots should be cleaned. I'm not necessarily FOR the complete CG revamp. I say it's been tampered with enough. Just make the film flow well, fix the music edits and the like. Jabba should probably be fixed as well. I would also have the 1977 version on there as an option as well. Same for each OT film. Special Features: Open the vault. Give me the works. ESB: Same difference. Just clean the effects. I don't want anymore added. I'd like Morrison to re-act his Fett lines. He did a shitty job. Special Features: Ibid. ROTJ: Fix sabers and all the other tech issues that plague the OT. Nothing more. I don't need any added shots. Don't replace Jabba, he'll look rediculous, just do something to fix that embarassing Jedi Rocks bullshit. How could you possibly have thought that piece was a good idea? I'm toying with the idea of adding a hint of Anakin's theme with a flute once Luke removes Vader's mask. I don't know if I'd put Qui-Gon in there...it's not part of Luke's quest. I do like the idea that some have suggested of having the final shot be the spirits with Mace and Qui-Gon appearing, but that takes away from the entire OT cast. Special Features: Ibid. |

It's never looked right at all, especially now after that slaughter scene in ROTS. In all fairness to the whole lack of visible damage the lightsaber does, that entire scene could only truly benefit from a nearly complete reshoot. Everything following Luke catching the lightsaber is poorly choreographed and photographed. In retrospect, I think that the next actual versions of the films will only be on a format like Blu-Ray and the 3-D theatrical release. I'd like to think that this new OT individual release is just to sell the remaining 2004 Discs and test the waters for O-OT sales, but realistically I don't see it happening. If a DVD box set is released next year, it will be the same DVDs we've got, with additional bonus material (which will be aimed at advertising the TV shows). But my dream box set would be restored OUT DVDs with the 3-D versions of the films, plus loads of supplemental material. |

Following up on ETAndElliot4Ever's idea, I decided to take a rough pass at adding some burn marks and contact flashes to the sail barge fight. Some extra spark hits would probably help too but I don't have the right plugins to make them look decent. I agree about the choreography too, the burn marks & contact flashes help but a lot the guards definitely should have been losing arms and or heads. Here's a few clips: Clip 1 Clip 2 Clip 3 |

Something else to fix for ROTJ would be the transparent shuttle cockpit interiors during the strike team's approach on Endor. It's in the same vein as the snowspeeder cockpits in TESB, but not as glaring. Still it's noticeable and ought to be fixed. Just my $0.02. |

Those vids looked great, but you're right a lot of the people should've been hacked in two, lost hands, etc. |

Cool stuff. It does still kind of look like Luke is thwacking them with a stick rather than a lightsaber though. There are a couple of guys on the skiff that should clearly have been cut in two or lost their head, but they just sort of jump off and yell. |

Episode I and II: Jar Jar replaced by a more serrious character ( Chiss!) Episode 4: Better Lightsabers, a lightsaber duel with good amount of action Episode 5: More scenes with Yoda and Luke Episode 6: Shorten some of the Jabba scenes and get rid of the ewoks |

I'll ask you the same question I asked some other jackass- what is it about Jar Jar's character that makes you think he was meant to be serious? |

Ekasra didn't say he was supposed to be serious. |

Yeah, really. Ekasra's comments don't seem to be out of line with the unrealistic theme of wishing and hoping that a lot of people here have displayed. Not me, I liked Jar-Jar, o-kee-day ![]() I guess my dream box set is, let's see....free, has all movies in all versions as well as all special features/documentaries (ever-made), a bonus commentary track of people ridiculing/arguing-with Lucas' commentary track, sound clips as well of people assaulting Ben Burtt with his own overly-explained "sound designs", nude pics of ANH/ESB-era Carrie Fisher, and I suppose cash hidden in the jacket would seal the deal. Realistically, I would be sattisfied with a box set of all the SE's (I could give a shit about the originals, they have been playing in my head since I was 7), new Yoda in TPM, and maybe some new special features. I would prefer to have them all on old school/current-format DVD. Other than that, I just hope it's under $200 and that it comes out soon (next year I'm guessing, I pick mid-summer). Anything else will be a bonus for me. ![]() |
