Yeah, looking at what turned out to be the "release" with that Soundtrack set, it's not gonna be anything cool. If anything, just re-packs of the exisiting films.

Lame.

Expectations lowered to basement level.

As mentioned in the Digitalbits link I posted before, there is already a repackaged set of all 6 movies coming in the fall. That is a retailers repackaging, not anything new, so that shouldn't be a big suprise or disapointment.

Amazon.co.uk is taking pre-orders for a DVD set to be released November 12th. Not much info other than it will be 4 discs.

A 4-DVD set? Sounds like they're re-issuing the 2004 set that had the bonus DVD yet again. :what: Why am I not surprised?

The source says it's coming but not right away. The materials are done and ready to go. However the Box Set is on hold.

Since the Limited Edition Non-Anamorphic OUT DVDs sold poorly, LucsaFilm is re-evaluating the release strategy and trying to develop the best way to sell the Box Set without a triple-dip backlash.

[hr]

First off, I would not post this if it didn't come from a reliable source. MF pretty much world premiered the 2004 DVD Box Set and all aspects of Revenge of the Sith: from exclusive images to the final trailer transcripts to world premiering the soundtrack, the DVD, and it's deleted scenes.

Just look at the niggas we have: DarthFirst, Starman, Spoileriffic, even MF admins: Ternian and Sith Interceptor who also spoiled Attack of the Clones thanks to SI's script. Hell we even got Death Star Gunner here.

Now will all that said, I find it interesting that the Box set is ready to go. The only reason I would buy such as set would be for the new bonus materials as the source originally suggested. The question is what are the new materials?

Also, if LucasFilm wants a way to sell a new Box Set they they could start with Prequel Trilogy Special Editions and throw in complete scores for each film.

New material could be made. A remastered TPM and in-depth music and sound effects docos for each film would be nice. In fact, those'd probably be the only reason I'd even buy the new set.

I would rather them wait to release the proper Saga DVD box set than the one that's coming out this fall.

I agree too that they should release the Prequel Trilogy Special Edition soundtracks along with the Saga DVD set.

You can blame Lucasfilm for the Non-Anamorphic Theatrical cuts being sold poorly since that is not what fans wanted.

I'm not buying any more Star Wars stuff until we get a proper Saga DVD set with updated Prequels, corrected Original Trilogy and even the Special Edition Prequel soundtracks.

At least a bonus disc for each individual film. Aside from Empire Of Dreams, the Trilogy DVD set 4th disc was phenomenally disappointing. The worst featurette (or whatever you want to call it and aside from the video game shyte) was the lame "Legacy of Star Wars"...as if I give a fuck what Peter Jackson or James Cameron think about the movies. Plus, they advertised that in the DVD trailer?? Where the hell was the footage of ILM making the speeder bike animatics and blowing shit up?

Welcome to the future, everyone! The year 2004! The height of technology! :yay:
I'll never re-buy these movies on regular DVD again. That bus has long left the station.
Haven't even cracked open one SW DVD case since DVR-ing 'em in HD. --"My God, it's full of stars!"

So a hearty "thanks" to HBO & DirecTV for giving me what Lucasfilm will not. HD-DVD/Blueray Format War be damned! Though if my HD-DVR satellite box crashes on me, I will be mailing DirecTV a petrified turd.

HD is the "real" future for these movies & the only true upgraded format I would even consider purchasing. Seeing HD is believin'...

Amen. I also have all six movies in glorious HD permanently sitting in my DVR (taking about 50% of my total disk space :( )

I've got the DVD9 WMV-HD versions so they can be stored on DL DVD's and I don't need to take up hard drive space.

Those have been my exact thoughts for a while now (except for the complete scores part). I don't see why throwing in both the original and revisionist versions of each film wouldn't please just about everybody.

Oh by the way, hello all.

Could it be that enought pissed off fans sounded off to Sony to make them revise their plans??? That would please me!

There was never a proper 4-disc release in the UK as far as I know. 3 disc versions were released to general marketplace but there was a 4-disc version limited edition only at HMV stores or something. It sold out really fast and that might be why this is a UK release, so everyone that didn't get the original 4DVD set can get one now.

How long does a release take to get from the US to the UK? Because even if this is only a UK re-release it doesn't bode well for the possibility of anything new in the US.

Fucking Lucas.

I'd bet he sell more empty metal cases to those of us who bought the four disc set in 2004 who would like to have that case then he will trying to sell that same four pack again. :whateva:

Douchebag.

That's not actually true, the Silver n Black 4 disc set came out here in the UK the same date it did in the US. Then HMV released a different set with just the movie discs in vintage artwork style packaging. This was before the re-pack with the OOT sets came out last year.

Thanks for correcting me!
Since that's the case, then this is just a double-dip, or triple dip?
How many times have they gone to the well on these DVDs?

I doubt anything is gonna happen in 2007 unfortunately. They dropped the ball big time on this one.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is just part of that "vender's repackaging" that the Digital Bits pointed out a month or so ago.

If that's the case, this is material Lucasfilm already released and that retailers are pulling out of the stock rooms and putting in a new box. That's not Lucasfilm's doing, really. It gets released, then the stores, online retailers, etc. can reshelve them whenever they want. Of course Lucas could tell them not to, but why bother? I sure wouldn't.

Same thing happened earlier this year with the complete set of M*A*S*H on DVD. Fox claimed that it was sold out and wouldn't be re-released at all. Then suddenly this summer the shelves at Best Buy starting filling up with the set, and Amazon listed 100 copies available. It wasn't Fox's doing, it was the retailers who just kept them in the back room for a few months.

I am in agreeance with Bandersnatch. I think Lucasfilm really does want to hold off a bit to release the proper Saga DVD set just for a bit so they don't give us a double (or triple?) dip and they get more backlash from profits and fans.

I just wished they would have released this proper Saga DVD set before hand instead of having to wait...at least though they're finally realizing that fans won't put up with this bullshit from them (Lucasfilm).

LFL's huge mistake was rereleasing that half-assed OOT set last year. They could've had a really nice, 30 Anniversary edition of ANH (including the deleted scenes and a properly restored pre-SE version) out by now that would've sold a fuckton.

That's true but unfortunately they didn't think that way.

Edit: I thought I had read that Lucas wanted to wait to release the OT on DVD as one huge Saga box set until after ROTS was out. But with so much fan pressure he caved in and released it in 2004 instead.

Lucas had originally said that no dvds would be released for OT or even PT until ROTS was done. After relenting on TPM, AOTC followed and then plans were made to release the OT on DVD. Fan pressure had a lot to do with it also the massive amount of Star Wars bootleg DVDs that were available. I think the same deal happened with the 2 disc OOT single film DVDS (ANH, ESB and ROTJ)

It'd make sense that retailers would be willing to repackage existing overstock single DVDs into a retail package (i.e. get all 3 OT films, plus OOT extra disc as one box...creating and putting it in a box wouldn't be a big deal.. Best Buy did it with the Tin Box version and Walmart had their own as well) but it would really just be a matter of putting it into a box, getting Lucasfilm/Fox video to approve it and selling them.

I've said it before, but I think the whole promotion of the 30th anniversary was a complete disaster, nothing really broke through at all, the Rose Parade would've been a nice kickoff, but aside from action figure packages and stuff, it's been a complete letdown in my opinion.

At they very least, someone should have made a sticker and stuck it on DVD boxes that said "Star Wars 30th Anniversary" but nothing.
The fact that we are still speculating about if/when a 30th anniversary box set of any kind will be released shows that someone is seriously asleep at the wheel in the PR department.

Lucas is introducing Star Wars at the AFI 40th anniversary this Wednesday at the Arclight screening, maybe there will be news then.

Nothing is happening this holiday for DVD box set, which I've said before and will say again was a huge mistake for LFL from a marketing/awareness standpoint.

If nothing else they could've put all 6 movies into a new box, called it the 30th Anniversary Box set and sold it.

I think that it's not so much a matter of waiting for the format war to be over, but waiting for HD (either BluRay or HDDVD) to become saturated in the market, it's still pretty much in the early adopter phase and until prices drop and it hit's mass market I doubt we will see high def versions of the SW movies to purchase.

Having said that, I watched ANH in HD for the first time on HBO HD tonight, it was one of the first times I've seen an HD movie start to finish (Ive had HD for a year but nothing really jumped out at me that I had to see in HD before) , and it was cool to see a movie that I was so familiar with in HD. I'd have to say that Star Wars ANH looks great in HD, you can pick out the texture of Obi Wan's robe, everything looks richer, it's pretty cool.

I think on one hand, Fox/LFL screwed themselves by saturating the market with lackluster single OT/Spec Ed DVD versions of ANH, ESB and RotJ (I've seen them on the clearance rack in so many places) that they couldn't really justify doing a new release of the DVDS in standard format without major consumer burnout/backlash.

On the other hand, as a film-romantic, I think it's totally lame that nobody thought of the idea to at least put some kind of sticker onto existing DVDs or at least run a TV ad that at least said "Hey Star Wars A New Hope 30th Anniversary was this year hey maybe go out and buy the movie if you haven't already"

All I've seen is toy packaging to indicate that it's 30th Anniversary and last years Rose Parade. That was it.

So as I've said it all year but I'm really underwhelmed with the 30th Anniversary push for a movie that was so important and innovative for the time it was released and there hasnt' been a peep from Lucasfilm on the DVD front. From a company that got their biggest push from a single theatrical film, you'd think LFL would have made more noise for A New Hope.

I'd say when the format war is over and HD reaches consumer level in 2008 or 2009 expect to see Star Wars Saga in 3d in theaters, followed by a high def DVD release immediately afterwars. Beowulf proved that 3d can work for mass market movie multiplexes and be profitable, I think that it's a gimmick, but I'd imagine LFL will squeeze one more theatrical release out of the movies (albeit with new effects, added scenes) etc, and then release them all on HD DVD, Bluray, digital download or whatever media format is the approved delivery system.

But I'd guess we are at least 2 years away.

Here in Australia there's a tin set containing the unaltered OT DVD's from Big W - which is essentially our Wal*Mart.
