I'll be in the minority here but given that a) i'm not a graphic artist. b) my fandom is obsessed with the films and anything else (toys, collectors plates, posters) is just a secondary bonus then, y'know i like it. It truly doesn't concern me that Obi-Wans parting is the wrong way around or that the balance of the picture is all wrong (i can't see that) or that the Mace, Palpatine and Padme pictures aren't the ones the fans would have chosen. Bottom line is i see the poster, i recognise all the characters at first glance and it fits with the style and theme of the previous PT posters. The truth is the majority of people who will see this poster aren't going to study in it detail and will most likely like it as Star Wars posters are generally much different than the majority of movie one sheets. I'll save my critique for the film. P.S I'm not 'having a go' at all the people who don't like the picture i'm just stating my opinion. ;)

What is it with Lucasfilm and flipped images? What is the fascination?

On a related subject, does anyone know if the lens flare fetish is GL's own, or is it an ongoing idea of some twat from the "art" department? The Vader helmet flare on this poster, which almost looks as if it was cut from another image and pasted in a random location on this one, is perhaps the worst one so far.

I actually don't mind the lens flares. I think they may have gone a little over the top with it this time, but previously I've always thought they add a lot of energy to the posters. Plus it's become sort of a SW poster tradition (since SE release anyway).

I'm not sure who's behind it, whether it's GL, Struzan or some self-important art department assistant. Whoever it was went slightly OTT with it this time. To see how it can work really well, check out the SE ANH poster, I love that one.

imho, I don't like it. It gives me the impression of a job done in rush, without any attention to details. Vader too big for a 5 mins cameo; Sidious too small for his huge role; Mace hovering; Anakin with a bad bad light; Obi is terrible. Just a quick collage of photos plus some cheap Photoshop retouch. I think Star Wars deserve more. Deluded. (imho)

I agree with you about the composition guerrestellari_it. I'd always imagined Sidious taking centre stage, like Maul on the Phantom Menace poster, with Anakin and Obi-Wan mid duel. It's annoying that Anakin appears three times on this poster (once=portrait twice=duel thrice=vader); all it really needed was to have a pic Obi-Wan duelling Anakin/Vader, Sidious, Yoda, Padme, possible the droids, the rest of it could have had some more space ships or vehicles. But they've gone character galore here.

I really dont care too much about the posters.....no matter how much they try, they cant match the feel and art style of the OT posters. The original ones not SE.

I for one like the poster. The mirrored images sort of bother me though. I think quality control would be a little more 'there' at Lucasfilm. But not too worried. Such is life.

FYI: This poster was painted by Drew Struzan, the same guy who did TPM, AOTC and SE. I believe that he did the Indiana Jones as well.

I think it's pretty cool, although for some reason Padme reminds me of Predator =P

Well, I for one like it. It can't be an easy job picking a poster layout that will define a movie. There's probably a reason certain characters are omitted or minimized and others are highlighted. But like they say, you can't judge a movie by its poster. :heavymetal:

I completely agree with Neil on his analysis of why the poster is just not working... I sorta said the same thing back a few pages - just not as elegantly has Neil did.

However, I have to disagree with him on his statement that it precludes how well the movie will be. Everypiece of spoiler material I've seen to date (pics, scene details, dialog snippets, making of vids from H$ when I was a member, etc.) has led me to believe this is gonna be the best of the entire series or least ranking right next to ESB. I haven't been disappointed yet in this area.

However, the marketing campaign totally sinks. They are pushing Vader so fucking hard down our throats that he could smell what we had for breakfast yesterday.

Anakin and Palps should be dominating this poster.

Am I gonna watch the movie, damn fuckin-a straight! I'll be in line for the midnight screening like everyone else. Cause it's gonna be off da hook! :heavymetal:

Impressive, most impressive. Actually last night, I was happy that ET even aired here because of our local volcano activity yesterday. But fortunately the breaking news ended right at the beginning of ET so I saw the poster last night. Interesting coincidence I thought where there is so much attention on a film where volcanic activity plays an intricle part, an actual eruption happens so close to my home. Freaky.

For those people complaining about the complaining -"I'd like to see some of you whiners produce something half as good." and so on, here's my modified version of the poster.

Edit: tweaked a few things

Yeah, I don't think that's a bad job at all. Still has the flying Yoda though. I actually really like the composition of Firespray's avatar version.

I'm sorry, but this reasoning has always been bullshit. Yes, some of these whiners have absolutely NO clue what the fuck they're talking about, they know as much about graphic design as a coma patient, but you also can't just wipe away all critique because most of the people here aren't graphic designers themselves. That's just as silly as nitpicking the shit out of a poster to glean the quality of the movie it's advertising.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

I went to Dr. Nick Rivera for a nose job. He replaced my arm with a leg and my leg with an arm.

I complained about his crappy work, then he said "I'd like to see some of you whiners do the surgery half as good."

Because I'm not a doctor, I shut the hell up and accepted his terrible work.

:meatwad:

p.s. I like your design, benovite

LFL has 100% added the saber clash pic by themselves! sticks out like a sore thumb when viewed against the previous struzan posters(+ the fact that it is already an lfl promo pic) even looks pasted on when lined up against the rest shame he didnt go for the triptych motif of the SE posters :( if u look at the other posters they both have a lone character standing in the middle or slightly off center, i bet if you remove the saber clash there was grevious or vader standing there
could ask him in person i suppose!

IMO the best of the PT posters, looking at that collection above, is definately AOTC. It's just very nicely balanced out in terms of scale and layout; it has an overall poetry to it that flows nicely. TPM has very little going on in it's poster of any real note, but it's not as overcrowded as ROTS.

What I don't get is why couldn't they have just asked Struzan to paint the poster how they wanted him to, rather than have him do a couple of paintings on his own and botch them together. I've always heard that previous posters were planned out well in advance of Struzan painting them, and that they were a collaberation between the LFL art department, promotional department, and Struzan himself. Unless they changed thier mind at the very last minute and decided on a complete overhaul.

This movie is how Anakin falls to the Dark Side

I couldn't agree with you more.

But about the poster. I like it, but I like the aotc poster better. I just think that Anakin should've been more prominent and we should've seen his, padme's and obiwan's shoulders and it looks kindof awkward when their heads are so close together. Also the stupid rasta costume on padme. WHY? Just WHY? I love the shadow on Anakin's face though. I also love how you aren't really sure if Sidious is a good guy or bad guy because of the expression on his face.

It *is* stylized, as someone said before not a perfectly accurate representation.

That said, I think It'll look great on my wall next the Ep I and II posters. :chewbacca:
