A. Smithee is a common psuedonym used in hollywood. Most often it's the director's credit when no one wants the product on their resume.

Check out IMDB. http://www.imdb.com/find?q=alan%20smith ... m=on;mx=20[/url]

But to whine about the name General Grievous when you have names and characters like Jabba, Jar Jar, and Dooku, borders on being laughably stupid.

Those names aren't adjectives, asshole. If Vader's name in the OT had been Darth Evilguy, I'd have found it just as asinine. As it is, "General Grievous" sounds like something out of Spaceballs.

I'll say it again. Complaining about corny or bad names in Star Wars is stupid.

I don't really give a fuck if you say it 24/7 or if you have a recording playing it for you while you sleep. All the other names you quoted -- and in fact practically every single name in the entire series, except for "Luke" and "Ben" -- has been made up with the intent of conveying an alien subtext. General Grievous doesn't fit.

If Grievous is a stupid name, then so is Maul (though I'd disagree, or not care.)

Just because one is an adjective and the other a verb makes-a no difference. They are both plain English words that aptly fit their one dimensional namesakes. "It could be worse..." it could be the Matrix.

Again this is where we disappear up our asses over gripes. If you listen to the commentaries or documentaries, Lucas himself pronounces Dooku and Han differently than anyone in his own films (except Lando while being choked to death.)

The film shouldn't need the book to make sense, but the book does add meaning to the whole Utapau sequence as part of Sidious' ummm insidious designs. Is it also a chance for ILM to put together another nice demo reel? Sure. On May 19th I for one while be too happily crunching on popcorn drenched in too much butter, and occasionally telling the asshole behind me to shut the fuck up, to care.

Sorry, but Jar Jar's name and behavior suit the character. Giving the leader of the droid armies and a killer of Jedi a hopping, bird-like walk, a comic opera Dracula voice and the cutesy name "General Grievous" is something completely different.

It seemed to me that it was the initial design and the EU stuff that didn't fit in the style and story of Star Wars. A leader of the droid armies (look at them, how much more weak and silly they could get), that is mostly a droid himself, doesn't have any clue what the war is really about, allows Sidious to use him as a tool without even knowing his identity and he is supossed to show cunningness of a master strategist outsmarting all the Jedi generals, stand up to the Force-enpowered skills of the Jedi and kill them in single combat (even without using his additional arms), sporting an appearance of a white-painted terminator (even acting as one, most of the time).

I thought he was bad concept then, but I like him now, when he is full of weaknesses, individual traits, Dracula characteristics, is cowordly, constantly hunches and coughs, doesn't kill ten Jedi a day in duels, in fact we only know that he collects lightsabers from their bodies and that he fought Kenobi once. I still prefer for example Cushing's Tarkin as a villian, who manages to be interesting to watch without doing any weird stuff (apart from taking his shoes off every time when noone is watching), but to me Grievous is a 100% Star Wars character as well.

Well to be fair, it isn't in context in the sense that there are no sound effects or music. Sound effects can make a big difference in how a dialogue is paced. And also, it sounds like it was recorded by a camcorder in a large echoing room.

The audio clip doesn't sound great, but I can't judge it yet.

He talks entirely too slowly

I thought the same about Palpatine's spoken line at the opera until the video leaked. It's too early for these judgments, regardless of what you say. We need the full video, with music.

That would be appropriate, considering some Star Wars fans act like the aliens in Galaxy Quest... :)

The actor who does the voice was at C3 and played a clip of the voice, and that clip is now on starwars.com. The link is earlier in this thread.

To put it in perspective, Admiral Ackbar roughly translates to "Admiral Great" in Arabic. I´m sure some ME SW fan thought that was funny as hell. :)

This is the same thing, only in English.

I have to agree about General Grievous not really being needed in this film. I mean, really all he is for is to get Obi-Wan off of Coruscant. Now, what I would have loved to see (and this is just my own imagination running wild, so please don't bash me for just talking. I'm not saying the movies should be changed to meet my image of them) is that Darth Maul wasn't killed at the end of TPM. He got away before Obi-Wan could kill him. Then, throughout the trilogy, Obi-Wan could have this ongoing storyline about the Sith who killed his master. Also, I think his search for Maul could have played more into Anakin turning to the darkside. Maul could have been the leader of the droid armies, and could have been killed by Obi-Wan on Utapau. I'm just in the camp that believes that Maul could have been a good character to have throughout the PT. Of course, I have no problem with how things have worked out. I like the PT. I just don't particularly care for GG.

Maul was too a dominant character. He had to burn out quick or he would have taken away from the main characters IMO. Just like GG...they are their for a purpose and then they should be gone.

Agreed. How many films have piss-poor bad guys? (think Dougray Scott in Mission Impossible II). I think it's great that Maul, Dooku, Vader and Sidious have absolutely ruled.... and I hope Grievious keeps up that trend.

Hey that GG clip on the OS may not be from EP III after all! Saju at TF.N posted a brief video clip from CIII where it seems Matthew Wood is doing the voice live. Someone asks him to say "Would you like fries with that?" and he does it in GG's voice.

The TF.N thread is here:

They were screening questions...which begs me to ask why someone didn't stop the idiots asking about Indiana Jones, Young Indiana Jones and the "Hey Mr. Lucas, (drool) Thank you for completing my life (slobber) I met you 20 years ago, and gave you a piece of paper, do you remember it? Do you still have it? do you sleep with it?) type people.

We had like 15 minutes minutes after Jay got on, spoke, his kids came out, spoke, and finally he got on, stood for pictures and then sat down. GA! I'm a bit touchy on it after waking up at 3:30 to get in line @ 4:30 so I can see this thing.

During Matthew Wood's program at C3, he had the Sagamore Ballroom Audio people convert his voice (Via his laptop) into that of Greivous (Add some Red lights and a bit of dry ice for atmosphere) He madly paced around in circles while reciting 6-7 lines of dialogue - IMO it was Deep with a slight bit of a distortion effect on it, It had a definate Metallic resonance to it also .... Sounded much different than what I've heard on any online media .... Different from Vader (JEJones)

If in the film it is similar to that of which I heard at C3 we have nothin' to fret

... As a joke the last line he spoke as Greivous was "May I have that with Fries"
