IMDB's Best Movies of 2005 Poll

IMDB.com is running a poll asking readers what was the best movie of 2005? Currently Harry Potter is winning the race, and as much as I enjoy these films we need to knock that wizard off his broom!

And just why are you so gleeful? And who cares about IMDB polls anyway? General public isn't even aware of them.

Which is probably a good thing, seeing as the general public are generally morons... The only awards ceremony I give a damn about is the 'Devil Dodo Awards', I couldn't give a rats arse about any others. The reason I'd place this poll over the 'People's Choice Awards' is because the IMDB is visited by predominantly internet movie geeks, of which I am one of... Hence, the result will have more meaning to me than the result of a poll of predominantly adolescent girls who are so brainwashed by all the crap out there they wouldn't know entertainment if it hit them in the head. Just look at the winners of this year's awards: Female movie star - Sandra Bullock. Need I say more?

I see what you're coming from but I think you overestimate the geekness of the IMDB visitors. For example, do you believe that any true movie buff would give a movie like Godfather 1 vote? And there're about ten thousands of these "1" votes. LOTR movie fanaticss have been knows to vote for LOTR movies like crazy and giving the lowest votes for old favorites like Godfather to move LOTR movie on top. Also, I've seen so many morons (including adolescent girls) on the IMDB forums that TF.N seems extremely intelligent in comparance. I don't even read any of their dicussions anymore.

At least People's Choice Awards talk about "favorite" stuff, not "best" and that's what a lot of people tend to confuse.

I don't think it is fair for you to perform comparance between his dicussions and yours. You are obviously a more intellegint person and are always going to win that battle, so it is unfair for you to engage in it.

That's not what I meant. Pardon if I wasn't clear (English is indeed not my first language). I was simply disagreeing with Devil Dodo's statement that IMDB is largely visited by movie geeks and not adolescent girls (and for the records I don't think that all teens are brainwashed idiots). And it wasn't me who said that "the general public are generally morons".

Of course I'm not saying that everyone who voted for HP is an idiot (or a little girl). But seriously how many movie geeks (or adults) you know who'd pick GOF as the best movie of the year?

PS Since when is picking on someone's spelling mistakes considered polite? Especially if it's a typo due to the fast typing during work time? I'm sure you can find a lot worse, including this very forum. Although I admit that this particular typo seems kind of ironic

I could never make it all the way through that movie. I must not be a 'movie buff' because I think it's way over-rated. For OG-mob flicks, 'Once Upon a Time in America' gets my vote.

And as far as the rest of this topic goes, Harry Potter GOF was one of the more entertaining films I saw last year. I personally was a lot more excited about EPIII, but I could understand a majority of online voters not being that into it.

I wouldn't really generalize the people who go to IMDB like that. God knows there's a lot of shit discussions that go on there, but I do agree with a lot of these results in the IMDB best and worst. Best Popcorn film could've gone to King Kong (as in, it nearly did). And Best Family could've gone to Narnia. Best Picture for GOF, if anything, is just an indication that a lot more people liked the film, not that adolescent girls are alll converging on IMDB to vote for Potter. I enjoyed GOF a lot, and I'm not really hardcore into the Potter books/films. I'd probably vote for it too.

Some of the discussions on the IMDb boards are beyond insanity... perhaps my faith in the IMDB community is slightly misplaced. I'm not saying that IMDb is made up completely of movie geeks, but regardless these results are still much more favourable than the People's Choice winners in my opinion. And the top 250 list at IMDb has most of my favourite films of all time. So, for me, of course I'm going to value these poll results more than an awards show that has given Julia Roberts the Favourite Actress award seven times in the last eight years...

As for The Goblet of Fire, I think it is a fantastic film... and I'm not into Harry Potter at all (I fell asleep during ALL of the previous films). It's completely understandable that it is leading for Best Picture.

As a rule of thumb, I generally despise people who say "dude, the book was *SO* much better, look at me, I read the Cliff Notes for 'To Kill A Mockingbird'."

That being said, GOF is a shit movie, esp compared to (*sigh*) the book. It's even worse than Prisoner of Azkaban and that was a collosal fucking trainwreck.

I still fail to see how is HP (any of them) as the best movie is better than Sandra Bullock as the favorite actress. If anything, it just shows that IMDB polls is more about popularity than quality just as People's Choice is.

Hp - POA was far superior to GoF (which sucked).

I have to agree with you there. I thought GOF was slow, the effects were distracting, and the story uneven.

Something about PoA felt alot more magical and creative....It jumped out at me alot more than GoF did.

I think I'm the only one who prefer GOF than POA ^^

So far, all the Potter movies have struggled with some amount of suckitude, but it just got out of control starting with POA. The first two were acceptable, but after that it was one screw up after another.
