Not a bad trailer...

That was one of the most awkward panels I've ever seen.

Was it tense or was that just me?

I remember the Celebration Anaheim TFA panel was like a rock concert.

Not really feeling the title at the moment even though it does raise some speculative questions. I dig the trailer though, it stirred some genuine excitement unlike the first TLJ trailer did for me.

So let's start the discusssion. Do you think the Emperor's laugh was just used for the trailer's sake or will he (or his influence) play a part in the film? Does the title bring into question Rey's parentage again or does it mean something else entirely?

Oh, shit! Just noticed the wrecked remains of the Death Star in that ocean shot at the end! Interesting. If I recall correctly, some of the early concept art for TFA had the Emperor’s throne room submerged underwater.

I called it about Rey being a Skywalker. The title and the heavy focus on Rey says it all.. I knew Abrams was playing games with us all. I just choose NOT to be gullible :)

Ian McD showed up at the end of the trailer at the Chicago Geek Fest. So yeah, I'd say that Sidious is still around, like Morgoth or Sauron.

Why else bother with all that Project Resurrection stuff?
Of course it is Palpy! Or maybe Jar Jar is force-altering his own voice ...

The movie could be about a Vader clone, Sheev's grand-kids, or an army of Snoke ghosts versus 999 Praetorian guards versus 7 Death Stars versus sexagenarian Boba Fett. The ST trailers can be inscrutable - so just about anything is fair game. It's interesting that awesomely powerful Rey appears to have returned. (She was last seen in the TFA.) Will Rey do Force-tastic feats that make Starkiller in The Force Unleashed seem restrained by comparison? (Half of me wishes yes and half of me wishes no.)

Is Palpatine only back, because Johnson took Snoke off the table? Will J.J. adopt the convoluted prequels theory that Palpatine manipulated the midi-chlorians to create Anakin? Is Rey the reincarnation of Anakin and thus Palpatine's "heir to the Empire?" Does Rey adopt the last name "Skywalker" as sign of her spiritual lineage or merely as a symbol of hope for the galaxy? Or, is she still "nobody" from "nowhere" and there is a yet unknown new "Skywalker" out there?

Is J.J. stealing his title from the Nolan's? In other words, does the movie's "Skywalker" ultimately rise to heaven a la Nolan's Dark Knight? Is the title about Anakin "Skywalker" doing one last good deed and finally rising from the material "Living" Force world to the "Cosmic" Force-heaven?

Billy Dee laughing took me back to my childhood. Thanks for that J.J. - you do make good trailers. I really hope this film is amazingly epic and not the overstuffed incoherent retcon shit-storm I fear it may turn-out to be.

I am glad that Disney is taking a breather before the next set of films. I hope this gives the creative teams time to map out a logical path for each episode in the new trilogies. So far, the relay race approach for the ST has resulted in an OT-copying reboot film (TFA) and a surprisingly subversive second act (TLJ). That's interesting, but a bit too clumsy for me.

Strong show!

I'm going dark on this now. I wasn't born in time for ROTJ, I spoiled myself silly for ROTS and now I want this to be the last, great, unspoiled, cap-of-trilogy Star Wars experience. See ya'll in December!!

I've been wondering if the title has as much to do with the entire Saga (Episodes I - IX) as with this one apparently final episode.

Notice at the beginning of the teaser, the words "Every Generation Has A Legend" is the same font as the opening of the first teaser for The Phantom Menace, which read "Every Saga Has A Beginning?" :monocles:

The part of the trailer I'm most intrigued by is the shot where our heroes are looking at an apocalyptic landscape, which many have speculated, is Endor with huge chunks of Death Star II laid bare. If this is the direction the story of Ep9 is taking, I am HERE for this!

I'll reserve judgment on the title until I see how it plays out in the final film.

I have to hand it to those marketing folks - they know how to make a trailer. The gold standard in the industry.

Something a pal of mine pondered earlier, what if instead of Jedi ... a lightside Force user by the film's end is known as a 'Skywalker' ?

That would be interesting, but there have only been a couple of Skywalker's versus thousands of Jedi.

In the trailer, Luke seems to be speaking directly to Rey. Is spirit Luke the mentor Rey wanted in TLJ? Is J.J. doing a quick change on TLJ much like Johnson did to J.J.'s TFA at the start of TLJ?

Huge RUMOR about how the final duel in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker plays out!

The rumor is that Matt Smith isn’t Palpatine reborn or rejuvenated but a dark side acolyte. However, during The Rise of Skywalker, Smith’s character is willfully possessed by the spirit of Emperor Palpatine.

  • During the final act of the film Rey and Kylo team up to fight the Palpatine possessed Matt Smith.
  • The two-on-one duel is pretty intense for the duo.
  • Eventually Kylo Ren kills Palpatine’s host body
  • Palpatine’s spirit then jumps into Kylo Ren’s body.
  • Kylo Ren is strong enough to not lose total control of his mental faculties.
  • Kylo Ren struggles to take control of his body but subdues himself and his weapon while beckoning Rey to kill him.
  • Kylo does the right thing and becomes Ben Solo again as he sacrifices himself to kill Palpatine.
  • Rey having never toyed with the dark side like Kylo Ren and the acolyte did means Palpatine has body evil enough to inhabit.

If the above is true, it appears that Super Shadow was consulted for the film rather than Lucas.

I have always been of the theory that Palpy's spirit was the blue energy we saw in TOJ, and that he inhabits some sort of vessel after DS2. And I always thought Palpy created Anakin as his intended PURE BEING to inhabit. But when Anakin fell on Mustafar, he became broken and unsuitable for Palpatine's transfer. (I mean, how can you do force lighting if your own arms are lightning rods?) Then Palpy turned his eyes on Luke, but Luke would not turn, and so could not be his vessel.

Patient Sheev has waited one more generation, and used Snoke to mould Kylo for the role. Alas, Ben feels the pull to the light side, and so yeah... he could totally commit suicide to protect Rey, et al.

BIG SWITCH ... um, so what if Kylo KNOWS from his training with Luke, what Sheev's big plan is all along? So then, infiltrating the bad guys from within, Kylo Kills HAN SOLO with Han's approval as a way to trick Snoke and Sheev into believing Kylo is actually really evil. But if Han willingly sacrificed himself to help Kylo with this ruse, it totally changes Han's death. "I know what I have to do. Can you help me?" "Of course son, stab me now!" And then that soft gesture of love, brushing against his son's face before the plunge into the star-shaped light below....

I am also CERTAIN that Anakin will make an appearance. So how does that fit in? He cannot just Ghost-Time Kylo and say Hey Dude, Clean up your act! That's what I did!

Maybe ... Anakin has been coaching everyone all along, and helping Luke and Kylo see what must be done to win the long game. Sure, Anakin was showing Klyo the dark side so he can succeed in his infiltration! Look son, I was only able to kill Sheev working from the inside. But since the Dark Side corrupts, you need to be very careful and strategic if you don't want to go full sith.

Even doing his best to hide it, even going so far as to kill his own daddy, the light in Kylo still reveals itself to Snoke. His disguise is not quite good enough!

So ever since Endor, Anakin has been working in the etherworld to restore a yin/yang balance and defeat BOTH sith and jedi. Kylo is right, put the past behind and go a new direction. Do this Ben!

The Palpy-ghost concept seems to crib from Dark Empire and recons Lucas' decision to deem Sith ghosts a no-go with the Clone Wars (see below). Overall, I hope that J.J. has come up with something more original and interesting than the described rumor.

During the writing of "Ghosts of Mortis," the seventeenth episode in the third season of the Star Wars: The Clone Wars television series, Lucas wanted to include two ancient Sith Lords who could serve as an "uber evil influence guiding the Son," the villain of the episode. The production team decided that Darth Bane and Darth Revan, the main character of the Legends video game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, would be the two Sith Lords.

The two characters were styled and modeled for "Ghosts of Mortis" based on their appearances in the Expanded Universe, but the scene, despite being laid out, was never animated. Dave Filoni, the show's supervising director, was apprehensive of the idea that Sith Lords could return as spirits, believing that Bane and Revan's appearance would have greater implications than the episode was exploring. Lucas thought about it as well and eventually agreed that the scene should be removed from the episode due to those implications on his ideas about the Force.

Agreed. I am just throwing ideas out there. After all, we only have a few months left to wonder and dream and theorize. Before TFA I was hoping to find Leia living with the Ewoks and Lando selling used mobile floating cities. I guess he still could be...
(And what WILL Mr. Zeroh do with himself after 9?)

OK. So a few things about this. The Mortis episodes were so very odd. They did not fit in with the established mythos at all. And they suggested that Anakin is the new FATHER and must Balance the Force. And the Father/Daughter/Son archetypes/gods were included in the last few episodes of Rebels, associated with the World Between Worlds. It seems the WBW might be the vehicle for the Flash Fighting that has been rumored.

Then there is the Moriban scene with Darth Bane as a ... what? Not a force "ghost" to be sure. But a force SOMETHING. Something we could hear laughing, just like good old Sheev in the teaser. So maybe the "bad" guys do not get to be force ghosts but must stay tied to an item or location. Maybe that is the Sithy way to stay connceted to the world.

Also, if we are going for a new definition of "Skywalker" as a force-balanced person, then the sith vs jedi "Ghost" is rather passe. EVERYONE/ANYONE can be a force ghost as EVERYONE/ANYONE is both dark and light. I am a big fan of Vedanta, which says all religious views are a valid part of the unknowable whole.

I do feel there are hints in Mortis and WBW. But which details are the hints, I am not sure.

It's a long gone tale but according to Tom Veitch (Dark Empire writer) Lucas disallowed the use of Vader imagery and instead pushed for the return of Palpatine. If true, this might be the sole plot point I appreciate from the sequal trilogy. It goes a long way toward explaining Snoke and the plight of the galaxy after the Rebellion's triumph.

Oh, and remember the episode of Trials and Tribbleations where the DS9 crew went back in time and they mixed footage of the OT (original TREK, lol) with Terok Nor folk? So ... what if they did something like that with some of the scenes (and maybe even unused or deleted scenes) to have ReyLo interacting with these folks?

Maybe Palpy finally found a way in to the WBW and is tearing through time, trying to "Kill Hitler" and change his own fate. ReyLo can go after him once they have conceived a new Force Baby ...
... named Ezra Snoke Skywalker.
And Mike Zeroh can be his god-falter. (sic)

I mean, they are already using old/deleted footage for the Leia scenes, and for Rogue One space battles. For what it's worth I think the Star Destroyer in the teaser looks like the scene is from the Battle of Coruscant...

For some unknown and godforsaken reason, I occasionally lurk this site from time to time. Deep down, I was holding out for meaningful hope. That's gone now.

The near utter lack of activity here (and elsewhere) speaks volumes as to the state of health of Disney Star Wars. It's appallingly, and deservedly, dreadful.

This new trailer makes clear what the actual tile of Ep. IX is...

Star Wars
The Rise of Desperation

or

Star Wars
The Chunky Vomit of Nostalgia

Star Wars was laid to waste so thoroughly by Ruin Johnson, Kathleen Kennedy, Pablo Hidalgo, and J.J. Abrams, that there's no fixing it. NONE.

They just made the cheapest play possible to get the original fans back into the seats. It's going to take some willpower and grit to resist the Dark Side of Nostalgia, but I have faith that a lot of those seats will remain empty (don't worry, just like for Capt. Marvel, Disney will prepurchase tickets that no one will use, just to puff up the numbers).

There is SO much wrong here.

Nearly HALF of the trailer's runtime made up of material that Disney spewed diarrhea allover.

The sounds are totally dominated by Vader's breathing and Palpatine's talking.

The goddess Rey destroying the Amazon forest with her super-force-thrown lightsaber. All of the Jedi preceding her, combined into one whole, cannot possibly trump her power. Even her Dark Side version has the coolest looking evil-red-jagged glowing saber ever! NOTHING is better than Rey. NOTHING.

A skyline filled with ancient starcraft: B-Wings, A-Wings, Y-Wings, and even the Tantive IV (I'd be surprised if it's NOT that exact ship). Militarily, this hardware is easily outclassed junk, but it pulls at the brainwashed fans' heartstrings, and that's the REAL reason for why they're there.

An enormous beam tearing apart a planet's surface - I'm grateful that they're putting that in the film, as we've never seen such a scene before. :whateva:

Rey and Kylo dueling atop of the Death Star II. It's epic. EPIC I tell you! How do we know? Look at the GIGANTIC waves crashing all around them, THAT's how we know. This duel is obviously the most important duel ever because tall water.

But all of that water will not negate the fact that Rey has already easily owned Kylo. TWICE. Without ANY training whatsoever. Look up "anti-climatic" in a dictionary, and one will find screenshots of Rey beating the tar out of Kylo.

The leaks in the other thread are probably spot on.

But it won't change a thing.

Star Wars is DEAD.

May its putrid corpse rapidly rot.

I want to THANK Ruin Johnson, Kathleen Kennedy, Pablo Hidalgo, and J.J. Abrams. They forced me to GROW UP. I sold off 80% of my vintage Star Wars toy collection. All of that money that came to me? Every penny is a penny that could never be spent on Disney Wars. A triple-win. And I'm lining up a few more collectors to sell off the other 20%. I better act fast, lest they see this film and then lose all motivation to give me their hard earned cash.

Why should a grown man nearly 50 years old be spending money on TOYS? Yes, I'm very grateful to Disney for finally growing me up. Helluva terrible growing pains. Happily, worth every bit of it.

It's heartbreaking to me. I've been dealing with a LOT of loss, much of it related to my childhood, and Star Wars was The Last Bastion for me. I was 4.5 years old when that star destroyer came roaring overhead at a DRIVE IN THEATER. I was sitting on a blanket, eating Doritos (which was very expensive back then - a rare treat in and of itself) and drinking Faygo Rock 'n' Rye pop. The stars on that massive screen were perfectly merged with the stars overhead. All of those toys. 200+ comic books. Novels. Pajamas. Pins. Plateware. Etc. ...

Who WANTS to say goodbye to their childhood?

No one.

It's always forced from you.

A good parent walks you through it thoughtfully, step-by-step. Real Life, of course, can deliver sudden and painful kicks that no one can prevent.

But what Disney has done cannot be undone. They callously and arrogantly opened up their flamethrower, and set aflame millions' of fans' dreams of yesterday.

If the leaks are true, and the major background of the Force from The Clone Wars is suddenly introduced into Ep. 9, they're not going to be able to pull that off. There is a lot of material that could've worked had it been introduced over the buildup of this trilogy, but that's not what was done. Hard to see how they can pull this off without it feeling like a major retcon of Ep. 8. Immersion is totally destroyed when the machine is seen trying to put Humpty Dumpty back together again.

Time to walk away without looking back over my shoulder.

These past two years - they've been very challenging, and will continue to be so.

The OT will always be there. The PT will always be there. TROS could absolutely stick the landing and tie the whole saga together as hinted at. Let's wait to see the final product before passing judgement.

The Mandalorian, TCW and Obi-Wan series are on the horizon, as is the new trilogy of films.

Lots to look forward to.

Don't give in to your hate.

Yep. OT/PT will always be there for me if TROS bombs.

I'm actually eager to see MORE TCW and Ewan back as Obi-Wan and what he does during the 20-year gap between ROTS and ANH.
