Oh man! it's here again, although I still can't decide if to watch these three-arc episodes weekly, or back to back at a later time. There has been so much hype around them, gonna be awesome!.

Liked this one. Had that "trippy" quality. Finally have some true character development. Ventress almost seemed like a sympathetic character as the episode moved along.

• Asajj Ventress began life as concept art by Dermot Power for a potential female Sith Lord during the development of Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones (2002). When the character was abandoned in favor of Count Dooku, the female Sith warrior was repurposed as a "Separatist commander" for the Clone Wars spin-off material developed by Lucas Licensing in toys, comics and novels in 2003-2005.

• Asajj's costume at the start of the episode is a direct recreation of the costume she wore in her initial concept art and early EU appearances.

• Author W. Haden Blackman developed Asajj's Expanded Universe backstory for the Star Wars: Republic comic. An early draft of her character was named Juno Eclipse, a name that would be discarded and resurrected as an Imperial pilot in The Force Unleashed. Ventress's backstory tied her to the planet Rattatak and revealed her to be the student of Jedi Knight Ky Narec.

• For The Clone Wars series, writer Katie Lucas preserved much of this EU backstory for this authoritative depiction of Asajj and her history. In the flashbacks seen in the episode, young Asajj is handed over by her Dathomirian mother to a Siniteen criminal named is Hal'Sted. The flashbacks then move to Rattatak, where she is discovered by Ky Narec after Hal'Sted dies from an assault by Weequay raiders.

• Another Expanded Universe concept is the planet Dathomir and its Nightsisters. Though the idea of witches in Star Wars has been around since the '80s (the Ewoks live action movie and cartoon both featured witches), these in particular debuted in the 1994 novel, The Courtship of Princess Leia by Dave Wolverton. The planet and the Nightsisters have made numerous appearances in publishing since then, but it was their inclusion in the The Clone Wars: Jedi Alliance videogame that prompted their appearance in the series.

• Mother Talzin's look is derived from a Sith Witch concept first developed by concept artist Iain McCaig for Episode I. Before Darth Maul was defined as Episode I's principal Sith Lord, McCaig explored several nightmarish witch concepts.

• When in their spectral forms, the Nightsisters do not cast shadows.

• In addition to Talzin, Naa'leth and Karis, a there is another named Nightsister in this episode, Talia.

• This episode sees the return of the Geonosian fanblade starfighter as Asajj's vehicle. It was originally designed for the pilot Clone Wars micro-series. Its distinctive shape was inspired by a Japanese fan.

• This episode marks the debut of Obi-Wan Kenobi's new Season Three character model.

• At the start of the episode, the Republic cruiser Resolute is destroyed, though Admiral Yularen did escape.

• The tactical droid TJ-912 acknowledges an order by quoting a classic Battlestar Galactica line often uttered by Cylons: "By your command."

• The scavenger vessel is called the Raider. It is a re-use of the Vulture's Claw model from Season One, but with a distinct paint job and some other modifications. Though his name is not spoken in the episode, the Twi'lek scavenger who finds Asajj is named Ratch.[/spoil]

Fun spending some time with the dark side.

I enjoyed the episode overall. There were a few things that stood out. The beautiful vista of the planet Dathomir from space for one. Also, the opening space battle was awesome - very much like the opening of ROTS. What else... oh, the stealthy trek to Dooku's palace was cool. And that ensuing three-on-one lightsaber duel was really quite eye-popping with the colorful light reflections.

I liked seeing Ventress' origin (and her adolescent, emo look), although I didn't quite understand what the main witch meant when she said that they had to give her up as a child to save themselves. And who could forget the rustic debris rummagers - a nice addition.

Liked this Episode, nice impression of Dathomir , very recognizable in comparisson with the Star Wars Galaxies version, I loved the ninja assasin style scenes, Nice one!

Can't wait to get the first glimpse of the Republic Commandos and see the differences in Armor from the game version.

Thanks, noticed when Palpatine orders Dooku to kill Ventress, his voice goes a little deeper like when he gives Skywalker his Darth Vader title in Revenge? (but not as much)

Excellent episode. I loved the visuals. The characterizations were very good. And the music. When the bloody hell are they going to release the music to these episodes?

Fascinating voicework for the Mother, too. Sounded very much like they were trying to give her the same "growl" Palpatine had just after he had been zapped by Windu in ROTS.

I wasn't expecting much out of this episode given that Darth Savage was yet to be introduced. The random Scavenger Shuttle and Dooku Duel were awesome.

In watching this episode on TV, I think the commercial breaks hurt the pacing of the story a little. I’m glad my first viewing was uninterrupted (and on a big screen).

Here is a brief interview with Katie Lucas from CNN.com:

[spoil]Katie Lucas talks 'Star Wars: The Clone Wars'

The new episodes of Cartoon Network’s “Star Wars: The Clone Wars" will introduce some intensely dark characters who deal with some grim themes, some of which sprang from the imagination of one of George Lucas’s own: His daughter, Katie.

The 22-year-old opened up to one of the "The Clone Wars" fans, 10-year-old Kira Simons, about why she decided to go into the family business.

It turns out that Katie began writing when she was in second grade, “just little silly poems,” she told her young interviewer.

“I really decided to become a screenwriter in college when my Dad was putting together the show,” she went on. “He mentioned that it might be a fun job for me and he knew that I loved writing and so he gave me an outline for the episode ‘Jedi Crash,’ and he really liked it...I’ve been working on the show for seven years now writing and I love it.”

To get their creativity flowing, Katie said the writers have something akin to “a big writing party,” where they all hang out in a room for eight days, talking about what they and the fans would like to see happen in upcoming episodes.

“It’s really sort of a collaborative effort to get these ideas up on the screen,” Katie said. For example, “In terms of the Nightsisters, they existed in the universe, but we kind of manipulated them and made them our own. I wanted them to be really like punk rockers and strong females because I grew up watching 'Buffy.'”

Katie, who was bitten by "Buffy" fandom when she was the same age as Kira, said she “loved being able to see, like, a really cool girl who is kicking butt….it was just fun and empowering and so that was just kind of my idea for the Nightsisters.”

In fact, Katie was such a "Buffy" fan that there was a point she preferred the slayer to “Star Wars.”

“I didn’t really like Star Wars when I was younger because it was always in my face and I kind of rebelled against it, I didn’t really understand it, I was a huge ‘Buffy’ nerd and I kind of took my nerdiness and put it there.”

But, she went on, “I’ve grown to really love Star Wars and to understand what a complex and interesting universe it is - it’s changed so many people’s lives that you can’t not be affected by it.”

Of course, Kira had to dig for dirt on the upcoming season, but Katie opted not to spoil many details. Will any Jedi turn to the dark side? Fans will have to wait and see.

"I don’t want to give anything away, but there are moments where the Jedi have doubts and I think that’s an important theme in the series now because it gives a little more of a world life view," Katie said. "Both sides are fighting for what they believe in and the separatists think they’re right and the Jedi think what they’re doing is right and I think it has a lot to do with our politics and our political climate right now...[S]ometimes the Jedi will have doubts about whether or not the war is justified, let’s put it that way."[/spoil]

Definitely felt that way to me, too. I watched the broadcast and then the itunes version the next morning. The second showing didn't suffer from those breaks, and the overall presentation was vastly superior. Will try to hold off till the next day to watch the episodes as they were intended - if I can help it.

So jealous you got to see this in theaters. The Dathomir arrival and Dooku lightsaber fight must've been damn gorgeous on the big screen.

I couldn't resist an wait to watch the three-ark back-2-back in a month so I just watched this one. And I agree with you guys, it was a bit better that I expected too; and yeah i can't wait to see it in my HDTV.

Did you catch the Battlestar Galactica reference?, awesome! when Dooku tells the droid that is commanding the fleet to destroy Ventress' ship, he replies by saying: "by your command".

The only thing missing was the red glowing eye ... naaa I kidd.

I can't wait to see those new action based episodes ! This one was really well done. Mother's voice is great on bigger speakers - there is a voice overlay when she talks - very low and sinister. Looking forward to seeing the new "bodyguard" in action ... although I have mixed feelings about Dooku being so hasty with his decision - Darth Maul got sliced by a 20 year-old jedi padawan :)
