I checked out Simon Pegg and Nick Frost's "Paul" tonight. Though burnout comedies usually aren't the kind of subjects we typically see in this forum, I think this film is an exception to the rule. "Paul" might be the first comedic love-letter to sci-fi nerds of our ilk I've ever seen done right.

Maybe it was the great sushi I ate just before the movie but I haven't been put in such a good mood by a movie in quite some time. Though it isn't always a barrel of laughs, Paul is a delicately written and well-executed road-trip flick seasoned with excellent sci-fi. You get some great visuals, clever storytelling, classic sci-fi music motifs, and an endless stream of homages. It references some of the most iconic golden age movies with such detail and respect that you can't hep but smile and giggle.

Though he's starting to wear thin on me with his quasi self-reinvention, Seth Rogan was terrific in a role that ported his best early work into a new comedic vessel. After the first five minutes I bought into the character and could suspend my disbelief.

For sci-fi nerds, this was comfort food. I highly recommend it. :heavymetal:

Pegg is great. You can tell he's a genuine fan of sci-fi and his references have so far avoided becoming annoying.

Simon's C-3PO spoof has been all over the place lately:
