Saw it this weekend.

In short, if you're a fan of the cinema verite meets modern special effects style Blomkamp employed to great success with District 9 you will like this movie.

It's a lot better than it's rotten tomatoes score (66%) would indicate although there are a few parts to the story I'm not as crazy about:

- Blomkamp knocks the gritty run-down dystopian Los Angeles setting out of the park but Elysium - the place - doesn't feel as alive or real. There's something missing there and it made me feel like I was in a different - and worse - film.

- I don't think the movie needed the flashbacks and "chosen one" stuff. It kind of hit you over the head with it time and time again.

Outside of those gripes it's a balls to the wall movie that's shot extremely well. The Kruger character is a fantastic villain and the special effects - as you'd expect from a director with a background in VFX- are practically invisible.

One of the better films of the summer but from the looks of this weekend's box office take, it's going to continue the 2013 trend of flopping blockbusters.
