Anyone else interested in the upcoming Aeon Flux movie based on the MTV animated show ? Charlize Theron plays the title character.

Quote:
Based on the MTV animated series created by Peter Chung, Aeon Flux is set 400 years in the future, when disease has wiped out the majority of the earth’s population except for one walled, protected city-state, Bregna, ruled by a congress of scientists.

The story centers on Aeon Flux (Charlize Theron), the top operative in the underground ‘Monican’ rebellion - led by The Handler (Frances McDormand). When Aeon is sent on a mission to kill a government leader, she uncovers a world of secrets.

I'm a huge fan of the original animated series that aired on liquid television. I'm excited about the new movie, but the trailer makes it look like it's really going to blow.

The look of the character is all wrong, namely the hair and the costume. Looks closer to Laura Croft than Aeon Flux. Also the look of the movie is too clean or something, needs more grit, gore, and wierdness to capture the feel of the Aeon Flux universe from the animated series.

That being said, I'm hopeful that the trailer was just 'thrown together' and we get a movie that's closer in tone to the original. That poster does get me somewhat hyped about this movie though:

Also check out the trailer for the video game on aeonflux.com. If the movie is anything close to that I'll be a happy camper.

uh oh!

This film was not screened in advance for critics

UPDATE: from my local rag the dallas morning news
Quote:
There's no way to say it but to come right out with it: Aeon Flux is a good movie. Actually, it's a really good movie.

Which is weird since this adaptation of the cult-cool cartoon (on MTV in the early 90s) seems to have been set up to fail by the studio (Paramount) releasing it. It's a big-budget action movie with Charlize Theron – born-again sexy after her Oscar-winning dip in the ugly end of the pool. That sounds custom-made for a blockbuster-scaled bonanza of marketing.

Instead? The studio decided not to screen the movie, assuring there would be no opening-day reviews. For movie critics, this is an unmistakable tell that means the movie is a mess.

But Aeon Flux isn't a mess, or maybe it is – a beautiful, smart, imaginative mess.

I saw it--I knew nothing of the show or previous background of Aeon Flux, but I must say that I enjoyed the movie.

That's usually the way it is with me though, my favorites are the ones that get one star reviews by Roger Ebert.
