Looks as good as An Unexpected Journey, with plenty of beautiful New Zealand vistas and elf-styled action this time around. Didn't think they'd reveal Smaug so early on, though.

Looking solid and a treat finally hearing Cumberbatch's Smaug.

Just got back from an advance screening.

Enthralling from start to finish. No more languid exposition-heavy scenes (if you discount a quick one at the start). But I'm sure that plus goes for most sequels.

Two major, immensely exhilirating set pieces. Barrel escape and Smaug mountain infiltration.

I liked it as much as AUJ. Maybe AUJ has a bit of an edge for its lighter, more optimistic tone but TDOS could grow on me over time.

Wish the screening had been HFR/48 fps. But it was free so I can't complain.

Saw DOS on Saturday.

I was a big fan of the first film. I know it's been called slow, talky, and expeditionary but I fail to see how that's any different from the heavily praised LOTR films. I personally thought AUJ was more engaging than any of the LOTR films and didn't suffer from the lack of focus those films often did. For me at least, it represented a prequel done right - referential and reverential to the originals while adding a new narrative arc.

I don't think DOS is as streamlined plot-wise as AUJ is, but it's definitely got more going on. Lots of great action scenes and connections to the LOTR trilogy.

Highly recommended.
