Official Synopsis
"Fresh from his role in last summer's box office smash, Marvel's The Avengers, Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) returns to the worldwide law enforcement organization S.H.I.E.L.D. He puts together a small, highly trained, team of Agents to tackle the cases that haven't been classified yet, the new, the strange and the unknown. That team consists of straight arrow Agent Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), an expert in combat and espionage; pilot and martial artist Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na); and brilliant if socially awkward scientists Agent Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and Agent Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge). They'll be joined by civilian new recruit and computer hacker Skye (Chloe Bennet).

Prepare for an epic adventure that showcases the hope and wonder of the human spirit. This is a world of Super Heroes, aliens and the unusual - of action, spectacle and world spanning stories. The show will speak to the human condition through the lens of our very human, non-powered S.H.I.E.L.D agents - that together we are greater than we are apart, and that we can make a difference in the world.

Executive Produced and co-written by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon & Maurissa Tancharoen (Dollhouse, Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog), Jeffrey Bell (Angel, Alias) and Jeph Loeb (Smallville, Lost, Heroes) comes Marvel's first live-action TV series, Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.."

They don't explain it entirely in the first episode, it's going to be a plot thread that will be carried through the season.

Unless there's a huge twist, it seems kinda obvious that:

[spoil]the real Coulson died and is now a Life Model Decoy but doesn't know it. There's a scene toward the end where he dodges some flying debris in a rather inhuman manner.[/spoil]

Right?!?

I say that having never seen this show. I figger if you good people say it's any good someday I'll buy it on DVD anyways. Plus I'm usually am at work at night and never get to watch TV on purpose any more.

It'll be interesting to see how they explain the Coulson thing though.

Troy, as a big fan of the MCU, I'm disappointed to say you're not really missing much. So far, I don't think the show has been anything too special. My biggest issue is I don't find any of the characters all that interesting. They're all rather dry and two of them (Fitz & Simmons) are downright annoying. Skye, aside from being eye candy is actually the only one that brings any energy to the cast. Everyone else is just sort of, there. Even Coulson lacks the same charm he had in his movie appearances, maybe it has something to do with his "resurrection" or maybe he's just one of those types of characters that works better in small doses. Clark Gregg is still great, but without better supporting characters he's not enough to carry the show on his own.

I'm still tuning in with the hopes it will improve story-wise but it hasn't been a show I look forward to watching each week as I had hoped.

The show has largely been a bust, despite its good ratings.

No character is interesting and it comes off as an attempt to blend Buffy with Marvel. There is zero dramatic depth. It is the opposite of edgy and is often embarrassingly written / acted. Last week's episode introduced some gore and a legitimate "oh shit" moment but when the tone of the show has already been set as goofy it really didn't resonate all that much.

The first episode - the one Whedon directed - was actually the worst.
