Indiana Jones to Begin Filming in 2007

George Lucas and actor Harrison Ford Oct. 6, 2006

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. -- George Lucas said Friday that filming of the long-awaited "Indiana Jones" movie will begin next year. Harrison Ford, who appeared in the three earlier flicks, the last one coming in 1989, is set to star again. Lucas said he and Steven Spielberg recently finalized the script for the film.

"It's going to be fantastic. It's going to be the best one yet," the 62-year-old filmmaker said during a break from preparing for his duties as grand marshal of Monday's Rose Parade.

Exact film locations have not been decided yet, but Lucas said part of the movie will be shot in Los Angeles.

The fourth chapter of the "Indiana Jones" saga, which will hit theaters in May 2008, has been in development for over a decade with several screenwriters taking a crack at the script, but it only recently gained momentum.

Lucas kept mum about the plot, but said that the latest action flick will be a "character piece" that will include "very interesting mysteries."

"I think it's going to be really cool," Lucas said.

At the inaugural Rome Film Festival in October, the 64-year-old Ford said he was excited to team up with Lucas and Spielberg again for the fourth "Indiana Jones" installment. Ford said he was "fit to continue" to play the title role despite his age.

Ford played Indiana Jones in 1981's "Raiders of the Lost Ark," 1984's "Temple of Doom" and 1989's "The Last Crusade."

Lucas praised Ford for breathing life into his character.

"Mostly it's the charm of Harrison that makes it work," he said.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade was in 1989. 1989! :what:

For me, the amount of years that passed since the last one is the reason I feel it can really turn into something very interesting. I want the new movie to be in quite a different style than the old ones. Ford is too old... for what? It depends on, what is he supposed to be doing in the story.

I don't follow your reasoning. What do the years gone by have to do with making a fourth film very interesting? And if you want it to be different than the others, I think we need to ask why must it be an Indiana Jones movie at all?

Those were rhetorical by the way.

And what Ford is too old for is playing the character. Now if he's going to play him so that he is a sort of mirrored version of his father from Last Crusade due to the age factor, well, I'll just watch Last Crusade since Connery is a better actor and I'm getting the younger Indy/Ford.

To each their own.

Lucas has said there will be a 'different' type of antagonist in this film. That's what I'm worried about. Fewer Nazis=poorer story, at least in terms of overall atmosphere. Temple of Doom demonstrated that.

I'm not worried about Ford's age, however. I just wonder how it will be worked into the story, which would be set around the beginnings of the Cold War I believe.

This worried me too.

It would be 'politically incorrect' for it to be the Chinese or Koreans in a Cold War setting (which was the original rumoured idea) so I think it's going to be something unrelated. To be at least, it should be something historical, not just hocus pocus magic from some imaginary cult/tribe that we can't relate to. Part of what makes Raiders and Crusade terrific is that the stories are grounded in familiar reality.

I agree partially. 'Reality' is a bit moot when you're dealing with the wrath of god and magic chalices. But Temple of Doom stepped over that line. The struggle between good (faith and religion) and evil (fascism) was what made the first and third films great.

I hope Senior Spielbergo can keep Lucas grounded when it comes to CGI. If Lucas was doing Raiders now, he'd probably CGI the pygmies, the snake, blah blah.

Which, when Lucas is directing, could mean anything from "we're using actual sets" to "we decided that we can use Harrison Ford's real body with the greenscreens."

But since Steven Spielberg is directing the movie, it could be true ;)

Box Office Mojo says they have the release date.

It's May 22, 2008.

It is Memorial Day weekend and Speed Racer has the same release date.

Looks like Shia LeBeouf is in talks for a role in Indy IV. Rumor is that the role is for Indy's son.

Variety: Rising son shines on 'Indy'

IESB: LaBeouf hasn't signed on for Indy 4 yet

Moriarty is talking about Marion Ravenwood being in the script. with Blanchett landing the role is she gonna take over from Karen Allen?

and with Shia LeBouf being in here plus Sean Connery, i take that Indy 4 is gonna have its fair share of comedy ;)

LeBouf denied being in the movie. Could still be lying though (?)

IMO Crusade has gone too much in the parody direction, I'd prefer the humour in Indy 4 being more in the vein of the first two.

George Lucas on Indiana Jones 4!
Source: USA Today
April 5, 2007

Indiana Jones 4 producer George Lucas talked to USA Today about the highly-anticipated film, to be directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Harrison Ford and Cate Blanchett.

Lucas told the newspaper that shooting begins in Los Angeles this June and then it's on to several top-secret global destinations. Lucas teased that one will include a waterfall.

Lucas said that Ford's age (64) won't be a problem. "He's not running in any of the movies. He's either on a horse or driving a car or a motorcycle. And he'll play his age in this movie with what's appropriate. The chases are more suspenseful than speedy. Like the rolling ball in the first film — it's not that he's running that fast, it's that there's a giant ball coming at him. And he will get beat up, which is a tradition for us."

Lucas, who also is in pre-production on a "bare-bones, action-heavy" "Star Wars" live-action TV series, said there'll still be plenty of action in "Indy 4," the official title of which he hopes to keep under wraps until the first trailer hits theaters around Thanksgiving.

Sean Connery has yet to sign on as Indiana's father, Dr. Henry Jones, but Lucas said, "We're still trying."

It wasn't his idea to cast Blanchett as Ford's new leading lady, he added. "That's who my director wanted, and I always bow to the wishes of my director," Lucas said of Spielberg. "I approved it because she seemed like a good idea. When I met her at the Academy Awards, I told her, 'Hey, you work for me now!'"[/spoil]

Shia LaBeouf officially signed:

[spoil]
Shia LaBeouf, one of the fastest-rising stars in the world of film, has now been set for the new Indiana Jones movie, it was announced today by Steven Spielberg and George Lucas.

He will join Harrison Ford who returns as the action hero, the man with the hat and the whip.

Production on this fourth installment of the Indiana Jones adventure is scheduled to begin this June in Los Angeles and will also film at undisclosed distant locations.

Produced by Lucasfilm Ltd., directed by Spielberg, and released by Paramount Pictures throughout the world beginning May 22nd, 2008, the screenplay has been written by David Koepp. Frank Marshall will produce the film with Lucas and Kathleen Kennedy serving as Executive Producers.

It will be the third film the charismatic Shia has done with a Spielberg connection, the first two being the DreamWorks Pictures productions Disturbia and Transformers.

"We are excited about bringing Shia into our Indy family," said Spielberg. "His talent has impressed not only his audiences throughout his young career but the directors, producers and fellow actors who have worked with him in his television career and now his film career."

"I was hoping the rumors were true, so I couldn't be more thrilled," said Shia. "To be cast in an Indiana Jones film is like grabbing the brass ring and holding on for the ride. I'll do my best to meet the high standards that Steven, George, and Harrison have set and I can't wait to take that giant step in front of the Indy cameras."[/spoil]

I would be more excited if Lucas was making an Indiana Jones movie on his own.

I hope Spielberg will not put in this movie any of his now-trademark scenes of emotionaly disturbed sentimentality.

The Shia LaBeouf article can also be read at starwars.com.

I guess rumors were true, and of course he had to deny the rumors until an official announcement was made. I also guess that Spielberg liked the job he did in Transformers to put him in his Indy 4 film.

MTV Interview with Frank Darabont

Darabont shares his strong opinions on his aborted Indy IV script.

MTV: Would you say one of those bad experiences is the time you spent writing the aborted Indiana Jones 4 script?

Darabont: ""Indy" is definitely in that category, topping the list. It showed me how badly things can go. I spent a year of very determined effort on something I was very excited about, working very closely with Steven Spielberg and coming up with a result that I and he felt was terrific. He wanted to direct it as his next movie, and then suddenly the whole thing goes down in flames because George Lucas doesn't like the script."

MTV: Did you ever speak to George Lucas directly?

Darabont: "Yes! I told him he was crazy. I said, "You have a fantastic script. I think you're insane, George." You can say things like that to George, and he doesn't even blink. He's one of the most stubborn men I know."

MTV: Do you know if any remnant of that story lives in the one they're about to start filming?

Darabont: "I have no idea if there's a shred of it left. It was a tremendous disappointment and a waste of a year."

MTV: I would think part of you still wants to share that script with the world.

Darabont: "I would love it, but it's not my material to disseminate. At this point, I don't give much of a damn what George thinks, but I wouldn't want to harm my friendship with Steven."

I don't know if the story is total bs, but I think that if this was such a greaaaat script, Spielberg would have fought tooth and nail to get that script done, not some second choice material. Then maybe again, this was what the whole "working on the script" garbage was about.

Either way I'm stoked for this movie.

Agreed.

By the way it's been confirmed that Williams will be doing the score for this movie and Lincoln too.

I'd be curious to read what Darabont's script was about.

Especially if Indy 4 suck - then again, I don't think Indy 4 will suck if both Harrison and Steven agreed to it.

I'm very happy that Darabont's script was trashed by Lucas.

The man is responsible for one of the most disgusting movies I ever seen - The Green Mile.

His comments about Lucas not liking his work also aren't on the level.

And Spielberg is always extatic about the work of his colleagues and friends. Anyone remember for example, how he behaved, when Lucas showed him the first model of the Battle Droid in "The Beginning" documentary? Like he just seen the eight wonder of the world. It means nothing, if he expressed so much appreaciation of the script as Darabont claims.

Rumors about some of the main story concepts are up on CHUD.

The author of the article is kinda fishy. For example he claims to have had insight into Darabont's script (and there aren't even any spoilers running around the net), but seems unaware that the creator of the main storyline is Lucas and not Darabont.

Also, in all his extensive reaserch on the new Indiana Jones computer game he hasn't been able to find any information from the Lucasarts official site or the game's previews.

Well, who knows, maybe at least his sources for the movie info are real.

IESB confirms all the rumors.

It's still hard for me believe, that they're using parts of Darabont's script and he doesn't even know about it.

And 13 crystal skulls? What the hell for so many?

The official Indy site just updated with a bit from Connery about his non involvement in the flick:

Quote:
While the man with the hat is back, this time he's not bringing his Dad. Sean Connery, who retired from acting in 2005, said:

"I get asked the question so often, I thought it best to make an announcement. I thought long and hard about it and if anything could have pulled me out of retirement it would have been an Indiana Jones film. I love working with Steven and George, and it goes without saying that it is an honor to have Harrison as my son. But in the end, retirement is just too damned much fun. I, do however, have one bit of advice for Junior: Demand that the critters be digital, the cliffs be low, and for goodness sake keep that whip by your side at all times in case you need to escape from the stunt coordinator! This is a remarkable cast, and I can only say, 'Break a leg, everyone.' I'll see you on May 22, 2008, at the theater!"
