Or Alien-Sequel syndrome, since Scott has openly stated that he bloody hates those films.

Outside of Aliens, I don't think he'll get much argument from anyone. I think Cameron paid great respect to Alien; the rest basically did their own thing.

This is the first time where Scott all but admits this is an ALIEN prequel.

Quote:
"[I've wanted to revisit it for] years! Years, years, years," he stresses, of Alien's space traveller subplot. "I always wondered when they did [Aliens] 2,3 and 4 why they hadn't touched upon that..

who's the big guy? And where were they going? And with what? Why that cargo? There's all kinds of questions."

Alien3 was horrid, and the AVP series to me is a "wrestling match-up" bad action-movie gone wrong, thing, that I dont really pay attention to. Maybe I'm missing something?

I dunno', I always felt Aliens was superior to Alien. Ridley Scott fan-club, get yer guns out.

It was more entertaining, if less cerebral. Surely diverted the storyline from thriller, to action movie. Still very sci-fi though, and to me still very interesting and thoughtfully executed. From the design of the Marine's ship and gear, to the Alien queen, and the teraforming super-structure itself, the sequel is one of those films that may have ESB'd its original in the minds of many.

The fourth one, while entertaining and not un-fun to watch, never really felt like an expected continuation of the storyline. It seemed a little like a "what-if?" alternate universe scenario or something. So of the bunch, if marooned on a deserted island with dvd capability and only one Alien flick to watch, Id pick Aliens.

Mainly because Sigourney Weaver running around in the futuristic version of mens tighty-whitey underpants always made me feel a little sick to my stomach.

I agree with you there, Troy. Those panties were FAR from sexy. The way they drooped of her butt in the back and rode low on the hips. If that's what was considered sexy back in the 70's then I think I dodged a bullet by growing up in the 80's and 90's :monocle:

One of the admins of HTF posted this about an alleged recent rough-cut screening:

[spoil]
[align=left]
" ... described it as neither really a prequel or sequel to Aliens.

It has a bit of Blade Runner in it; robots who are human and humans who are robots;

competing industrial companies;

Humans given a very special gift (the essence of life) who ultimately get greedy with it. ... "

possible spoilers I've been reading. continue at own risk:

[spoil]
[align=left]The "Engineer" is the bald humanoid that we've seen in trailers, duh, BUT he is played by Guy Pierce and is a type of synthetic robot / biomechanical creation. the urns contain life creating DNA stuff that the crew takes back to the ship. David is met by these Engineers and it is this knowledge of creating life from machines that people achieve that pisses the Engineers off. they think man will now be like them, human/machine hybrids, so they go about trying to kill the crew and humanity itself.

There are sluggish "parasites" that impregnate the crew, changing them into something.
Image

It's unknown if it chews its way in the host or fucks its way but it gets in. Elizabeth Shaw's character gets pregnant and survives an emergency c-section to remove the "creature". this slug thing is the tentacle we see quickly in the trailers going into the arm of a character.

Designs of this creature were done by Giger way back on the first Alien. see pics here:

Wasn't Guy in that futuristic TED presentation as the creator of the new artificial life?
Is he playing two roles?

The Guy Pierce thing has me confused as well. the TED video is suppose to be about 80 years before Prometheus leaves for their journey. So is Guy just playing a character seen in flashbacks or will he play both characters? lots of mystery to this film.

Spoiler (but probably not to anyone on this board): the expedition of the Prometheus is to the planet LV-233. (Alien was set on LV-426)

Will they end up on LV-426? I have no idea. All I know is that the more I hear about this movie, the more painful the countdown gets.

The big reveal they discuss about the new alien quickly glimpsed in the new footage:
[spoil] [align=left]the slug creature with the face of a pussy with teeth! [/align][/spoil]

• Q&A with Ridley and cast afterwards where Ridley says he wants a big as possible box office and that will dictate the rating: Link to the full audio Q&A session here

• Actual footage has been seen - here's a description from /scenes-from-prometheus/

• Lastly, new article up at Empire about the footage containing 19 new things learned about the movie.

Good or bad, I'm dying to see this. They've done a great job of keeping things under wraps. With two months to go and as much as we've been shown and told I'm still confused as fuck about what happens. I really hope nothing major gets leaked.

The mural seems to have a Sistine Chapel vibe to it.

Looks like we in the UK are getting a new trailer screened tomorrow night at 9ish during Channel 4's screening of Homeland. Apparently there's also going to be a mass public dissection of it either within the same ad-break or the next one. No idea what that actually means but for anyone that follows this sort of thing the tag is #areyouseeingthis

A completely new and original story it might be, but we've now seen visual proof of about 10 major things that connect Prometheus to Alien:

- Peter Weyland
- Androids
- Mission to an LV planet
- Derelict
- Space Jockeys
- Chest burster
- Goo
- Acid/face-melting
- Small, slippery creature that attacks
- Hypersleep

New quick clip on Theron's Vickers: link

I’m glad that Scott chose Lindelof for the rewrite. He seems like the perfect fit for the vision of the film.

Scott can also have his pick of writer for the new Blade Runner. I know the original is one of Christopher Nolan’s favorite films.

Wow! :o

That's a very The Thing-like thing in that shot. I'm glad they are going in a different direction with this creature instead of making it identical to the Xenomorphs we've become accustomed to.

Meanwhile, check out the similarities between these two soundtracks:

Yup. Same theme, different orchestration. I wondered if they were going to borrow any bits of Jerry Goldsmith's score. I think he would have approved.

This thing is leaking like Christina Aguilera's period juice.

It was screened for the French press. Here we go!

ENTIRE MOVIE SPOILED
[spoil]
[align=left]
The beginning of the film: The theme LIFE opens the movie. You see dark side of Earth right in the middle of the screen. We zoom in as the light begins to shine.

Pure 2001 like shot. Then its a montage of a newborn Earth, Icelandic scenary. We move ahead, as if we were flying toward a destination. Then a shadow can be seen....Looks like we were in the POV of a spaceship. Then we get the waterfall shot revealing the saucer ship, that has actually an almond shape. Then the cloaked Engineer walks toward the waterfall and behind him we see the almond shaped ship leaving towards the sky.

The Engineer opens a bowl, inside is some dark stuff, same as the one from the urns. He drinks it and starts to disintegrate. We zoom on his arm, then into his arm, inside his cells, we see the DNA shattering. Then we see him, it's quite painful and gory (even if his blood is now black). His leg shatters, he falls from the cliff into the water, and dissolves completely, mixing with the water. We zoom into the black water where the DNA starts to recombine itself as cells are born and life begins on the Earth.
PROMETHEUS tittle card appear.

Everyone goes for the first expedition. Fifield sends his probes which leads them down the tunnel. David stays a bit behind and notices some Engineer carvings. He understands them, touches them and activates the running Engineer holograms. The holograms you see of the Engineers running were from security monitors that recorded the accident. They were running, trying to escape but were trapped inside. A door closed on one, cutting it's head off, which the crew finds and take back to the ship later on.

Shaw and Holloway follow the last running Engineer who fell dead as the door closed. They look at his dead body and Fifield freaks out and says "fuck you i did not come here to investigate giant dead bodies, I'm here for rocks, just rocks!" He talks Millburn into going back with him to the ship.

We then follow Ford, Shaw, David and Holloway into the urn room. Then they are informed a storm is coming they have to get back. Ford and Shaw take the head, David steals an Ampule without telling the others. They go back to the ship, the storms hits and Shaw flies in the air trying to grab the head bag. Holloway helps her, David saves the day.

They think Fifield and Millburn made it back but no, they got lost inside the temple. They are informed by Janek that they can't send a search party now and have to wait till the next day inside the temple. They are scared shitless when they stumble upon a mass of dead Engineers in body suits, pilled one upon another scratching on a closed door. Janek tells them that one of the probes is picking up a lifeform 1 click to the west.

Again you can hear them scared (the tone of their scene is pretty light hearted even Janek is like having fun with them).

They go back to the Head room, Fifield has smoke inside his helmet and Millburn ask if thats a cigarette/nicotine in his filter, by the way Fifield act it looks more like pot. The snake appears which is actually some kind of worm but gets infected by the black goo that is now oozing from the urns. It mutates into the cobra/alien thing and then attacks Filfield, breaking his arm, the bone rips a hole in the suit and it gets inside. Fifield cuts it and it sprays acid inside his helmet. Another head develops from the severed cobra/alien and gets inside Millburn's suit and goes into his mouth.

David had hid an ampule and taken it back to the ship. He goes to meet with Weyland who is still in cryosleep. He puts the orange visor helmet on which lets him speak to the subconscious of the one sleeping. Weyland gives him an order which we don't hear. David is assaulted by Vickers who we learn is Weyland's daughter. David then goes and opens the urn. He join Holloway near the pool table with a bottle of Champagne, and puts a drop of black liquid from the urn on the tip of his finger.

They talk, David gives him the "are you ready to do anything to find the answers," then he serves him a glass of champagne putting his finger in it which contaminates Holloway. Holloway makes love to Shaw (after a discussion where we find out that she is sterile). The squid thing then grows in her belly.

The rescue team goes back to the temple and David goes on his own way toward the sleeping Engineer, and Holloway starts to really feel the infection. Shaw urges them to get back to the ship to save Holloway. Ford and 2 other guys discover Millburn and Fifield. The Alien Cobra jumps out from the mouth and escapes back into the dark goo water. They rush back to the ship leaving the bodies.

Vickers refuses the let them in, she holds the flame thrower, Janek who was with the party is angry he orders his men to open the doors. Holloway is on his knees and then pushes back Shaw, he accept his fate. "Do it!" he says to Vickers, who is scared and horrified, but she has to do it. Holloway walks toward his death.

Meanwhile Shaw has gone to the medpod, she had been sedated by David who knew that she was infected but she woke up in time to fight free. Something is growing in her and David wants to freeze her and bring her back to Earth. Even though she was only recently impregnated, David tells her she is 3 months pregnant! David is obeying his master, Weyland who wants specimens brought back. She wakes up, hits Ford and a Merc and goes to the medpod.

She gets in the medpod but it's not programmed to operate in that way so she has to program it, basically walking it through a c-section. The machine removes a squid looking alien with multiple thrashing tentacles and then the machine stitches her up. She stumbles out and confronts Weyland who has awakened from cryosleep and is in a wheelchair.

Weyland has the tentacle monster locked up while he explains to Shaw that he wanted the secrets of immortality from the Engineers. He orders another expedition to the temple.

Janek notices that Fifield cam is on and right outside the ship. One crew member opens the doors and goes to check casually. Fifield is on the floor, his legs arched toward his head like a scorpion. The crew member is scared, he looks at his face, then Fifield attacks him breaking his helmet.

All hell breaks loose and they torch him after he is run over by an all-terrain vehicle containing Shaw, David, Weyland, Ford and some body guards. Weyland, David, a Merc, Ford and Shaw go the pilot room. David activates the room to wake up the Engineer. The urns contain some type of genetic reconfiguring stuff which the Engineers were going to take to Earth but an accident stopped them and killed most on board the ship. Anyways, back in the Pilot room, Shaw asks David why they created us then want to kill us. David says, that to create sometimes you need to destroy first.

The Engineer wakes up and coughs like the humans waking from cryosleep. He looks at the humans in surprise, and Weyland says to David to ask him how he can be saved and live forever. Shaw says to ask why they made us and why do they hate us now. Weland tells the merc to silence her and he knocks her out with his weapon.

David start to speak with the Engineer, during the 2 year trip he has analysed all languages and manged to find the one used by Engineers it seems, the Engineer doesn't answer. He puts his hand gently on David's head, analysing him, intrigued, then he burst into rage, grabs Davids head and rips it off. He hits Weyland with it, the merc shoots and hits the Engineer but still moves forward and grabs and throws him and Ford against the wall.

Shaw runs off and the Engineer wants to go after her at first but then leaves her. He wants to finish the mission first, kill the humans on Earth. He gets into the pilot chair and starts up the ship. Shaw escapes and radios to Prometheus that the ship is leaving to go kill Earth.

The Prometheus goes after The Engineer's ship and launches a lifeboat to the surface for any survivors.

Vickers gets into the escape pod and makes it back to the planet before the ships collide. Vickers is then killed by the crashing ship as it rolls on top of her! Shaw goes to the lifeboat with the head of David who warns her that the Engineer is after her now.

The Engineer attacks Shaw who runs into the medical room where the tentacle thing is now huge. It grabs the Engineer, wraps him up and shoves a tentacle down his throat and lays an egg. It looks like a giant face hugger creature and it then dies after empregnating the Engineer who is dead from the attack.

Shaw is now outside with David's head and he tells her he can help her get back to Earth, there are other ships on the planet. She tells him no, she wants to know why they hate us so much and want us dead. She asks if David can take her to the Engineer's homeworld. David says yes and we then see another Engineer ship leaving the planet with a voiceover of Shaws sending a message back to Earth, telling them not to come there, that she is the only survivor.

Then we go back to the Engineer's body which then erupts with a chestburster. The end.

it's getting pretty poor reviews. like 3/5 type stuff. the Engineers are treated like they come out of a Friday 13th slasher. It just attacks and chases. The giant head is just that, a big freakin sculpture. Nothing is learned or revealed outside of the first 15 minutes of the film. Basically, if you've seen all of the trailers you've seen this movie!

Looks like it's getting mixed reviews, not necessarily poor:

And it's looking good at Rotten Tomatoes so far:

how much you want to bet the torrent of this leaks before it even opens in America? There's a price to pay for opening in Russia before the US.

the average Joe reviews I've read say it's better than Alien 3 but not the first two. There's a LOT of inconsistencies with the acting quality. David, Shaw, and Vickers are top notch but the rest of the cast are borderline retarded. Also the SFX, sound and score are awesome as well but the plot just leaves so many unanswered questions that were blatantly left open for the sequel that it leaves you feeling unfulfilled at the end. damn.

Empire just gave it a 3/5

"Buffeted by a lack of suspense, threadbare characters, and a very poor script, the stunning visuals, gloopy madness, and sterling Fassbenderiness can’t prevent Prometheus feeling like Alien’s poor relation.... There is no accumulation of dread, none of Alien’s haunted silences and primordial drones that slid beneath your bones. The film is too busy, too talky, too noisy by half. Awe, wonderment and terror need atmosphere to flourish.

For all the CGI grandiosity, there is a flatness to the mood. Prometheus is strangely impatient, irritable, rushing its set-ups and squandering drama. Characters perish, but without any great wit or design, and in fits and starts. The film can’t fix on where it wants the action to occur, dragging the cast back and forth between the Apple-elegant fixtures of the good ship Prometheus and the grey-green bio-horror chambers of the ‘temple’. Motive is sorely lacking.

Somewhere in Switzerland, Giger is snorting into his schnapps."

That Empire review sounds like a bunch of smug, pretentious horse shit to me.

Meanwhile, there are several stellar reviews out there already. It's still at 88% on the Tomatometer, with only 2 negatives. Even the Variety review which is counted as "rotten" for some reason isn't hardly negative at all.

I'll reserve my judgement for AFTER I've seen the movie myself.

T-5 1/2 hours till I see it.

I've shied away from reading any spoilery reviews but the sentiment I'm getting is that Lindelof might have unnecessarily Lost-ified the script.

When it comes to these genre films simple is ALWAYS better. ALIEN and ALIENS are simple, simple films. Do they have grand mysteries? Yes but they're left to the audience to ponder while the rest of the plot trucks on. I absolutely fucking hate when filmmakers think they're smarter than they are and introduce all sorts of boring bullshit philosophical exposition just to preach about their stupid-ass worldview.

Star Wars was better when it was about bad guys vs good guys. I want filmmakers to learn from the mistakes of past prequels.
