T3 wasn't the greatest flick ever, but I appreciated how the ending pretty much forced all future sequels to stop pussyfooting around the central conceit: the irony that the protector was there to ensure that Judgment Day happened the way it happened, not to prevent it.

It was Skynet that was trying to change the past, not the resistance. But I nevertheless liked the way the TV series turned that direction on its head and went back to the pussyfooting (although the Sarah Connor on that show is much more like typical TV Mom than I'll-kill-you-if-you-look-at-me-wrong Linda Hamilton).

But this is just fucking stupid. I won't accept a story in which John Connor doesn't beat the machines.

I thought Terminator 3 was a good film and should have left it at that. It tied the whole series together and for them to make a fourth one, well they're running this into the ground and even with Bale it might suck.

AICN says it's not PG13 either, rated R baby!! looks good so far too. Has a Mad Max sort of feel.

I like the static cutting into the theme, very good take on it and that teaser wasn't a damn thing like the description from earlier.

Okay gotta say that does look interesting. I'm going to be cautiously optimistic about it since Christian Bale is in it. Yes I agree the teaser definitely is different from AICNs description or unless they saw a completely different trailer.

new poster care of empireonline, something just doesn't look right with the design. he looks squished or retarded, could be either:

    Image
this guy, Roland Kickinger, will be playing "Arnold" in T4.

    Image
New image from aintitcool.com 37528, CHUD says this image is from the very BEGINNING of the film where John and some others invade a Skynet base. Also, they're saying there's a 65 foot Terminator in this. :o :| :what: we might have seen a glimpse in the teaser when a giant arm crashes down and grabs a soldier.

Anyway, McG comes out to a stage already dominated by the above T-600 and paraded out names to appease the audience. He talked about speaking with James Cameron, Arnold Schwarzenegger and the writer is Jonathan Nolan who co-wrote THE DARK KNIGHT. Then he said Stan Winston’s designs are all over the movie. In essence… “Please like it and don’t boo me.”

He addressed the rating, and said there are only two people who would want the film to be PG-13 and they told him to make the picture and if it’s R-rated, it’s R-rated. There might be some wiggle room there.

Then he called Christian Bale’s cell… straight to voicemail and held it up, saying that he made a promise to Bale that if we didn’t cheer loud enough he wasn’t going to show any footage, so everybody screamed for Bale’s voicemail and the footage rolled.

I’m going to run it like I ran my Wolf Man footage coverage… Here’s my typed notes, with the screen completely black as the footage rolled:

Helicopter, bale lying on the ground. How many survivors are there? One. Dead terminator, light landscape, sunset. Stepping over terminator… daylight… come with me if you want to live from kyle reece to worthington… primative t800 machine gun, steps on skull - some road stuff looks like road warrior tow truck chase kyle rreeceterminator close up. If you saved us once in another future, you can save us in this one… conner screaming you son of a bitch as a t-800 hand comes into frame, dragging across his face as he screams.

Here’s a more detailed description:

The footage played very light… in that the aesthetic isn’t dark like in the flashbacks. This takes place a full 10 years before what we glimpse in T1 and T2 and the machines are in their early stages.

The first shot was a high shot, looking down at a crashed chopper, with Bale lying on the ground. He sits up, sees the T-600 crushed under the chopper (we later see him aim his gun down, like the still that was released, and put a single bullet in the head as the lights go out in its eyes) and try to raise someone on a CB. He gets someone and is asked “How many survivors?” “One,” he responds. “Repeat?” Then he says it sharper, louder: “One!”

He steps over a dead endoskeleton and walks into the deserty sunset.

We’re introduced to Worthington, who seems like a good guy, but there’s a later scene with him chained up and Bale looking him in the eye saying “You killed my father, you tried to kill my mother and you’re not going to kill me.” Maybe I’m not up on what’s current with the flick, but is Worthington a terminator?

Worthington sees a human shape in what looks like a broken down garden and calls out. It, of course, is a T-600 and shoots at him with machine guns attached underneath its arms. Worthington is tackled before he’s hit and Anton Yelchin sits up and says, “Come with me if you want to live,” with a smile.

By the way, there was a couple of interesting glimpses: One, a shadowed T-600 overlooking a pen filled with humans, like a concentration camp and the other was a closer look at a T-600 with his face looking skull-like... not metal endo-skeleton skull, but human skull... kinda like the original Giger alien. Maybe that was a trick of the light, but something was different... maybe it was just some of the "fake rubbery skin" that the early Terminators are supposed to have that I'm mistaking for a skull.

Then we got a lot of Road Warrior-ish chase scenes through a desert landscape, broken down cars… being chased by something we don’t see. The truck the humans use is a reinforced tow truck.

There’s a voice-over from, I assume, Bryce Dallas Howard, where she says “If you saved us once in another future you can save us in this one.”

One of the last shots was John Conner pinned to the ground, a close up as he screams out “YOU SON OF A BITCH!” and a Terminator hand comes into frame, looking like it’s going to touch his cheek. They cut to profile as it drags down his face as he screams. Is this the origin of the scar?

That’s pretty much the footage…

For the panel, McG is joined by Common, Bryce Dallas Howard, Moon Bloodgood, Anton Yelchin, Sam Worthington.

Here’s a few tidbits from the panel:

- Takes place 10 years before the t-800 model, seeing the state of the war before what we’ve seen in the T2 future war sequence.

- “We’re making a gritty and real terminator. It’s not for pansies. We’re making the terminator, you know?” Sam Worthington

- Skynet robots we will see are called Harvesters, transporters, hydrobots. Supposedly designed like Scott’s and Cameron’s Aliens universe.

- Bryce Dallas Howard had an analogy to respond to a question about how they’re going to incorporate the ability to change your fate. Bryce held up a plastic cup and said if the cup is you and the table is fate, the assumption is if you drop the cup it will hit the table/fate. She dropped the cup and grabbed it with her other hand, saying that fate can be changed based on action.

- “I’m trying to protect the mythology of the first two movies. I wouldn’t have signed on if they hadn’t. I love Jim’s films and Jim himself.” – Sam Worthington

- Will Schwarzenegger be back? McG dances around it, saying that the T-800 definitely is part of the mythology, but won’t say any more.

- Sci-Fi is over, according to McG because we’re living it. Spell-checking blackberrys, sheep cloning, etc. He’s making this a war movie.

- They’re approaching it like Nolan approached BATMAN BEGINS.

- Claims the ending on AICN was deliberate manipulation by the studio. Get Kyle Reese to the point where Linda Hamilton would sleep with him. Yelchin studied the first movie and dissected the character in order to keep it consistent.

- T-600 is the robot on the stage.

- Do we get to see what Skynet looks like? Yep. Studied Chernobyl for post-apocalyptic world.

- An Asian dude named Tim came up to the mic and asked a question using an Arnold voice. McG: “That was awesome. And if you’re Asian, that was fuckin’ unbelievable. Bring him up!” And the dude took the stage alongside another pair that came to the mic dressed up. One as Sarah Connor from T2 and the other as the T-1000 with bullet hits on him. For that dude’s question he held up a photo of Eddie Furlong and asked the panel: “Have you seen this boy?”

- Film will be dedicated to Stan Winston.

- John Rosengrant was brought up, from Stan Winston Studios to talk about the machinery. McG’s analogy was the first Mac you bought was huge and had 2 megs of memory and today Macbook Air can control the world. The T-600s are bulky, huge, weathered… 7 feet tall. Soviet tank is the inspiration.

- Moon’s a pilot, Sam is Marcus and Moon takes Sam to an outpost led by John Connor. Moon and Sam are romantic interests.

- Bryce is Kate Connor. “What attracted you to this picture other than you get to make out with Bale?”- McG

- Common: “I’m just glad to be here, honestly. Every time I see the trailer and the clips I’m like, ‘I’m in the Terminator! I can’t believe it!’ We rollin’, man. ” – Common

And that was the panel. I had to run off and do an interview at the very end, but there’s some good stuff in there.

All in all… I need to see more. I like that they’re changing the aesthetic and perhaps building towards the future world we see in the original films and Bale was great, but I want to see a little bit more… maybe a full scene… to see how it works dramatically.

sounds like theres been some re-writing after everyone learned about john getting killed and turned into a terminator. also, looks like Skynet isn't software anymore!

Ah-nald's face and voice to be used in T4. seen on set with Bale ah-nald

[spoil]

I should make it clear, i have varous contacts in WB and from what i've been told the fans are in for a treat. The premise of Arnie's involvement is to have a fully rendered digital face of Arnie replacing the recently cast Roland Kickinger (The Younger version of Arnie). It seems the Director Mc G will in no doubt try all he can to ensure the Governator has some sort of involvement and as a result Arnold was on set providing key ADR (Voice over) for the visual effects guys to reference during post production. You have to remember, Arnold's commitments are preventing his return to the movie business and this seems the best logical way to ensure his involvement.

You may recall Christopher Lee's face being embossed on a stunt double in the Star Wars prequels?, imagine that with Arnold and you will get the picture. With ILM's best on the scene, it looks like Mc G is trying to get a head start on James Cameron's photo realistic stereoscopic camera systems.

a behind the scenes video was posted and quickly taken down around the net today. it was called Terminator Salvation: The art of Martin Laing. I've read a little bit about what was in the video. Basically there will be 10 different Terminators in this film, including a motorcycle type terminator and a giant one called a harvestor that picks up humans for collection.

found it here but I can't get it to save. watch quickly!

here's some screen grabs from the video:

The T-600 is a bigger, stronger version of the T-800. He's a monster but doesn't blend in well with other humans since he's quite a bit larger.

Kyle Reese is young in this one. In the pic above he is saying the line, "come with me if you want to live" to Marcus.

They showed some pre-viz scenes of a highway motorcycle-terminator chase. It looked a lot like the Transformers chase, zooming in and around the cycles.

yeah, there's deffinately a matrix / gears of war / mad max vibe going on. which isn't necessarily a bad thing, it's just not terminator yet.

these are being taken down quickly. the T-600 looks good, not feeling the water snake or the motorcycle though. These are un-inspired designs. If machines started designing machines, then they wouldn't be constrained to two legs, a hip, a forward pointing head, etc. Matrix at least had that part correct by having the machines designed after insects. And if that big thing is a "harvestor" then where is it's containers for holding what it harvests??

My hero! I've been trying to find these since yesterday.

My problem with the "Harvester" is that Skynet never needed humans, so harvesting infers that it's collecting something, in which case, it's not a terminator, is it? Besides, I thought that's why we had the huge tanks, the perform the same function, blow up big buildings? Kill in large groups? etc.

From Terminator:

REESE
Hunter Killers. Patrol machines.
Built in automated factories.
Most of us were rounded up, put in
camps...for orderly disposal.

He pushes up the sleeve of his jacket and shows
her a ten digit number etches on the skin of his forearm.
Beneath the numbers is a pattern of lines like the auto-
matic-pricing marks on product packages.

REESE
(continuing)
Burned in by laser scan.
(pause)
Some of us were kept alive...
to work. Loading bodies. The
disposal units ran night and day.
We were that close to going out
forever...

there's apparently been a re-write on the ending. totalfilm says:

[spoil]
1. Remember the leaked ending that hit Ain’t It Cool News five months ago? The one that claimed the climax would see John Connor die, only to be resurrected as a robot?

It isn’t the ending (thank goodness) but the geeks didn't pluck it from the clear blue Skynet, either. “That is not the ending. John Connor is not the machine. We did discuss that idea, but that is not the ending, I can say that right now.”

2. There’s been a lot of net chatter about McG’s Comic Con claims that James Cameron gave his blessing for Terminator Salvation’s creation. Well, it seems McG may have misquoted himself. We gave him the opportunity to set the record straight.

“I did go to see James Cameron. He didn’t give us his blessing, but he didn’t shit all over our movie. When Jim was making Alien, he was following the great Ridley Scott, so he knows how we feel.”

3. When Christian Bale was at the rumour stage for TS you couldn’t move for sheep claiming he'd never sign up for another franchise. It seems that he nearly didn’t.

“I met Christian when he was shooting The Dark Knight. He told me to fuck right off, he didn’t want to do it. He said, 'Write it so that it could be read cold on stage and I’ll think about doing it.'”

Of all the rumours McG busted for us, this was one of the most exciting - if that really was Bale's ultimatum, we've got high hopes for this script.

4. When shots of Arnie hanging out on the Salvation set were shoved into all of our computers, the internet exploded with rumour. Was Schwarzenegger there to film a cameo? Give his blessing? Try and get a cut of the profits?

Well, we’d bet our Terminator 2 action figure collection that we know the real reason. He was there to get motion captured for his all CGI debut as the T800.

“We’re trying to synthesise a human character with a CGI character and that may or may not have something to do with the T800,” McG told us with a smile.

The process isn’t without its problems, though. McG isn’t happy with ILM’s work so far... “At the moment it’s not good enough,” he said. “And we’re running out of time.”[/spoil]

That's actually encouraging to hear. ILM has continuously set the bar for VFX, so having someone push them harder will be sure to bring about great things.

It's coming online later tonight in HD. I saved the above file but since it'll be back later in glorious quicktime, why bother uploading it? You don't get many money shots. The same giant loader shot from the ET preview is the big reveal at the end. No Arnold. Lot of "Mad-Max" wasteland shots though :heavymetal:

one thing that's kinda stupid is Bale is still using his ruff Batman voice in this one. Same exact thing. :whateva: But it IS cool what he's saying directly to a supposed Terminator, "You killed my father, you tried to kill my mother, you will NOT kill me."

LatinoReview still has it streaming here: latinoreview.com /terminator-salvation-int-l-trailer-5832

I'm really hoping for some time-travel stuff in this one. Like this Sam Worthington dude who's apparently some kinda cyborg. Exo-Skeleton with human brain hybrid thing. What if in the end, he gets Arnold's skin put on him and gets sent back in time as either T1 or T2's Arnold?? !! That's a twist I could dig. It could also explain the title "Salvation". Maybe meaning he has to keep the timeline correct or John Conner won't grow up to be the badass he should be. Just thinking out loud...

oh, and the trailer is up now and it's different from the one before. apple.com /terminatorsalvation/

and how much ya want to bet this shot will be revealed to be a freshly minted, naked Arnold, picking up the gat in the factory?!

I can see this being a very good flick. But I'm still skeptical about making a Terminator film without THE Terminator. Arnold needs to be part of this somehow or it just won't pack the same punch.

Bale really shows off his range in this role - his characterization of John is really unique from his latest and most identifiable role as Bruce Way---

Oops.

it didn't take itself seriously enough. the only good thing it had was an ending. Arnold going into a gay strip club with the fru fru glasses? Talk to the hand? Come on. The story was really useless as well. John Conner the whiney little bitch who just wants to hide and run away?

A new pic was released but it looks fake to me. check out the lack of shadows on the Terminators And one is mysteriously balancing on a canister somehow:

Also, comingSoon.net has a set report which revealed:

the film may end up PG-13, there was definite R-rated material in the footage we saw including topless shots of Moon Bloodgood. Whether or not that footage makes it in the film remains to be seen.

I call bullshot on that poster. Don't think it's official. If it is, it's pathetic.

I agree I think it's fan made as well. That looks fucking ugly as hell if it is an official poster.

I've heard something about the new ending. I don't know if it's true. I'd say take it with a grain of salt, but it does matchup with two of bearvomit's posts above.

Arnold is 'sort of' in the movie. The naked guy picking up the gun in the trailer is actually pro bodybuilder Roland Kickinger. He was a regular on Howard Stern’s FX show from a few years back called Son of the Beach. Anyway, he was hired as a body double and they are CG'ing Arnold’s face over his because Arnie is not in that kind of shape anymore at 61.

The Terminator (Arnold) attacks John in the factory. John is able to trick him into following him (John) into the Time Displacement equipment. John traps Arnold there and sends him back in time to be the Terminator from the original film.

The salvation aspect has to do with John saving his own past so he'll grow up to be the savior he needs to be. So it seems that he doesn’t just send Reece, he also sends the Terminator. John knows that Skynet's creation and subsequent actions are inevitable. He decides to prepare the mother so she in turn can prepare him for the future.

My comments:

Of course, this changes the first movie where Skynet sends Arnold back and older John chooses a man he knows to be his father (Kyle Reece) to follow that Terminator back through time before supposedly destroying the Time Displacement equipment.

I think this might tie in with T3 in the sense that we find out that the apocalypse was inevitable and that the main plan was simply for John to survive it.

There were too many ways in which Skynet’s existence could come about. The Sarah Connor Chronicles seems to follow this route as well with many different terminators either preparing for the period after the holocaust or helping to make sure it happens.

I think he will have to pick between saving his wife or keeping the timeline... ie, if he saves his wife, reese dies, therefore he doesnt exist, therefore there is no wife, therefore causing quite a problem for him.
