Strike my earlier post about Mark Ryan doing the voice of Ironhide, that turned out to be false. Though he is still doing the voice in the videogame.

So as well as the Decepticons being all ugly and spiky and just plain weird looking, they're also grey? Lame.

I also worry that such obvious physical differences between autobots and decepticons inevitably predisposes baby transformers to the direction their life will take. Born with spikes and no colour? You're evil. Don't like it? Tough. Have a penchant for classical music and fine art? Well, that doesn't make you a nice little gobot, it makes you a supervillian in the making. But don't worry, you'll still get to do it with all the groupie decepticons.

I have never seen any sort of Transformers cartoon in any form, but this looks like a great action movie.

I sometimes can't help but feel a little weird reading about people complaining about starscream or ironhide because they names sound so 80s and retarded.

I also don't like how Shia is wearing a Strokes t-shirt, as if that will make him hip and alternative.

the ILM work looks insanely good, and it will be fun to watch during hot, hot weather. Just to make my ears ring at least.

I have, and I can see why people who were/are big fans might have some issues. But I agree with you on it looking like a great action movie. It might not match what a lot of people wanted to see from this, but it looks like fun from here.

I grew up on G1 Transformers....soundwave rocked, and the seekers were fscking cool. I was iffy on this thing until I saw bonecrusher plow the bus. That pretty much had me. If I had to see one movie on this weekend, I'm pretty sure it's this one.

Oh, I liked that.

Still not happy with the Decepticon designs, but that trailer hit the spot.

That was pretty sweet though I'm surprised they reused so much footage from the teaser trailer and TV spots. Enough with that slow mo Scorponok and "Bring it!" shots already.

Just some things that stood out for me:

Starscream looks badass in all his shots, I love that shot of him jumping up and TFing in midair then zooming off leaving Ratchet and Ironhide in the dust.

Jazz gets totally owned by Megatron, that was great and Megs is freaking huge.

Image

Looks like he also uses some sort of mace weapon when he attacks Spike on top of the building. That would be another G1 nod from the first cartoon episode where Megs fights Prime with an energy mace.

The G1 transformation sfx is used when Prime TFs which is cool although it could be blended in a bit better.

Where the hell is Brawl? He's pretty much the only bot we haven't seen in any footage yet.

I'm stoked, the story may turn out lousy but at least the action won't disappoint. The designs have grown on me a lot since seeing them in motion. The only one I still don't care for is Megatron. Bring on July 4th!

What was the title that flashed before my eyes? "Michael Bay - The Transformer"?

There still doesn't seem to be any story in this and I'm not excited by action scenes without one to lead to them. Also, the transformers seem to be devoid of any character traits. They are just random humanoid tanks. I don't think I will be ever curious enough to even download the movie.

Just had to quote you, saved me typing out the same shit.

Thats prolly one of my favorite movie trailers of all time. Easily better than the majority I've seen in the last few years.

So well produced, sound design...visuals...everything.

I like how they're giving us a quick "tease" of this stuff, not giving away too many moneyshots. I love it.

Prime looks fucking sweet....all the designs, in motion...just look spectacular.

Roll on June 28th!! (Yes, us here in Aus get it first!! Whooo!!)

Lucky bastard!

Slightly Extended Trailer

Same trailer but with about 10-15 seconds of extra footage. Some extra shots of Scorponok, Blackout and a different ending with Prime. :heavymetal:

Damn this movie does look good.

I noticed too when Optimus was transforming out of vehicle mode they had the actual G1 transforming sounds. I wonder if that will be like that in the film too...

Bah, I saw similar stuff many times in cartoons. And they were much more interesting than this crap.

A real man doesn't need ILM SFX to get excited. A nice story and characters, and a few sketches of things blowing up will do.

A severe violation of the testosterone act of 1985 has been reported. You, 'sir', need to hand in your balls and ID immediately for review. Unless you can prove sarcasm or a broken keyboard, a life of Starbucks and Fashion reviews awaits.

Seriously though, Mrs.O told me that this has 3 of my geek-pre-req's (robots, space-ships, and explosions) and that I won't be getting laid anymore if I force her to go see it. I still might sneek in to see it though.

She's signed up for "Transformers 2" which is apparently being scripted right now....crazy. This thing is gonna rock all sorts, so will Megan Fox.

A superherohype.com forum member got the novel.
Final paragraph spoiled below in case anything happens to the thread.

[spoil]
[align=left]SPOILERS FOR THE NOVEL BEGIN BELOW

Ok, I just picked up the official novelization from the movie at Books a Million.

To begin with, I know a lot of people wanted to know if the beginning and ending were intact.

Then, I'll go into some random details that popped out at me that I found interesting. In some cases, this will be spots that clarified things in the script, in others it may be some nice touches.

Either way, there's major spoilers to be read here, so keep away if you want to remain spoiler free (even though this is the spoiler forum)

...

THE BEGINNING / THE END:

- There's no Cybertron scenes from what I can tell, but it's entirely possible given the early screening reports. It opens with a description of the Allspark, so maybe Optimus narrates the history/opening. The discovery of Megatron by Sam's great-great grandfather is still there.

- THE ENDING. I skipped to the end, and it does end with Optimus going onto a mountain and sending out a signal/message of hope to the remaining Autobots around the galaxy indicating they have found a new home on Earth. It's not Everest, as the script had, but it's almost exactly word for word the same.

ODDS AND ENDS

* How Bumblebee ended up on the used car lot.
-- Bumblebee is trailing Sam. Makes sense given his infiltration role in the IDW comic line which the film seems to take a lot of tone from.

* Blackout's attack on the base. The electronic screech is basically a sped up modem connect handshake. A techie explains this, which makes sense, given that they're trying to interface with our technology and that's probably the slowest speed the Decepticons can manage.

* Tyrese & Josh's group are the only survivors of Blackout's attack of the base. Epps captures a thermal image of Blackout, obtaining proof of the Decepticon's presence on Earth. Blackout wiped out the base for the sole purpose of keeping his appearance secret. Scorponok was ejected to track down the humans who have this evidence.

* Frenzy is phase II of the Decepticon's attempt at tracking down the location of Megatron. From the prequel novel, the Decepticons find out about Project Megaman and Sector Seven. Blackout's hacking attempt was interrupted when someone physically severs the network connection. Frenzy manages to finally obtain the file, killing three of the President's men.

* Y'know how the original script had a lot of cutesy nods to the phrase "more than meets the eye"? So far, there's only been one, and it made sense without being forced. Basically, when Sam gives Mikala a ride home, and she ends up spilling the beans about being a car geek, she says something like, "You think I'm shallow?" and Sam says, "Nah, I think there's more to you than meets the eye."

* The novelization reads a lot easier than the prequel novel. In so far as the characters "feel" like normal characters instead of cliched stand-ins. Not many G1 nods offhand, although, when Bernie Mac asks where the Camaro came from, the mechanic says maybe it was dropped off by that 18 wheeler that came by last week.

* 100 pages in, Bumblebee makes his move to escape, likely to report to Optimus that he found the relative of the guy who originally found the All Spark. Sam calls 911 since he just saw his $4000 car being stolen. He chases BB on his bike, while on the phone with 911. He sees BB transform and leap off. 911 doesn't believe him. BB must have noticed as he returns before the authorites arrive. It seems as if he's doing everything he can to maintain cover.

* The novel is 291 pages. I may scan in the last chapter/page if anyone requires proof.

* There may be some last minute changes, as the All Spark is referred to as the Energon Cube, and Brawl as Devastator.

* Sam kicks Frenzy, who later rescans the contents of Mikala's purse and takes the form of her Sidekick.

* The three comets in the trailer? Those are the Autobots (Ironhide, Optimus, Ratchet) - Ratchet takes his form from an emergency vehicle that arrives on the scene of the meteroid crash. Ironhide takes his form from a pickup truck in the driveway next to the pool where he crashed.

* Possible change : When Sam says "superadvanced, probably Japanese" in the trailer, the novel has him saying this in reference to Bumblebee. It's entirely possible this is how the trailer was edited, however.

* Optimus generates a 3d hologram of what Cybertron looks like. Lots of metal, lots of destruction, lots of decapitated 'bots, etc. A war ravaged place it looks like.

* Gah. Frenzy is in Mikala's purse when Sam and Mikala are at Sam's house looking for the specs. Eerie. Lots of humor though to make up for it. Autobots trying to understand our words is pretty fun. ('Did you look within the oblong clothing storage device?' 'Perhaps it's beneath the four point floor sheath.')

* Possible change: Jazz is the one who falls into the wires at Sam's house, while the screenings indicate this is Ratchet.

* Optimus never says "My bad." This is all Sam, when his dad is mad at him showing up late, having not done his chores.

* Possible change: Latest trailer has Sector Seven interviewing Sam saying "Your car.. TRANSFORMED?!" and Mikala says "That'd be crazy." No mention of transforming by SS agent.

* Mikala learned about cars from her dad, who's up for parole for Grand Theft Auto.

* Jazz seems to have the ability to magnetize his hands. He grabs Sector Seven's weapons that way.

* Cool exchange between Autobots:

* When Sector Seven picks up Sam and Mikala, Frenzy accompanies them in her purse. SS gathers all the people who have interacted with the Transformers (Tyrese/Duhamel's group; Blonde techie; Sam) now that they know there's an impending invasion in the hopes of finding out more information about them.

* The All Spark animates someone's cell phone, which goes insane and has to be put down.

* Frenzy escapes in the dam, and wrecks havoc, causing Megatron to start to defrost. Starscream and gang are on the way. The proverbial fan is about to get hit with excrement. Duhamel takes Sam and the Cube to where Bumblebee is, to get advice on what to do.

* Megatron's first words? "INSECTS."

* Interesting scene:

* Bumbleee takes the Cube, and they leave the dam. Megatron awakes, transforms and flies off in alien jet form to meet with Starscream who is waiting outside.

* Bumblebee and Sector Seven link up with Optimus, Ratchet and gang on the freeway. Bonecrusher and Barricade show up. Bonecrusher in vehicle form is scooping vehicles up and tossing them out of the way, before transforming and blading his way up the road. Optimus transforms to stop him as we see in the trailer. Barricade leaps on Optimus' back. Optimus blasts Bonecrusher and handily thrashes Barricade against a freeway pillar. Remaining Decepticons fall back to re-evaluate their strategy.

* They're heading into the city to call in an air strike. They split up. Frenzy interrupts Keller and Magie (techie). Fight ensues. Feels Terminator-ish. She runs out of shotgun ammo, ends up ducking as one of Frenzy's discs end up decapitating Frenzy.

* Air strike in bound. F22 Raptor circling city. Every TF fan should see this one coming. Epps radios F22, which ignores them. Ironhide knows something's up and orders Jazz and Bumblebee into flanking positions as the jet launches missles at them. Bumblebee gets torn in half as a result of the attack, trying to defend humans. He tosses a car up in front of the missle.

* All Spark falls to the ground, triggering a massive shockwave that causes all the electronic devices in the area to come to life. Scene in a shopping center indicates a cart piled high with gaming consoles sprouts arms and tries to free itself from its box. Flat screen tvs sprout legs, stereos stumble about aimlessly. At a nearby gun shop a rifle begins to sprout tendrils and rise but collapses as the wave dissipates.

* Brawl and Blackout arrive on the scene. Jazz jumps on Brawl's back before he can shoot Sam and Mikala. Ratchet and Ironhide show up and start bashing on Brawl.

* Megatron sends out a massive pulse blast and knocks Jazz to the ground before ripping him open and taking his spark.

* Optimus and Megatron lock eyes, as Megatron transforms into a jet. Optimus leaps up onto Megatron dragging him to the ground. They transform and begin to battle.

* Bumblebee drags himself to the cube, and begs Sam to go, and he naturally refuses. "Ggggooooo Ssssammmm..." Ironhide provides cover for Sam as Starscream lands in the street (as seen in the trailer) Blackout tries to stomp on Sam.

* Fun quote for everyone:

* Sam goes to the roof on Epps urging. He's called in Blackhawks to rescue him and the All Spark. Just as Sam is about to be rescued, Starscream blows up the chopper.

* Mikala helps Bumblebee to fight. He's firing at Brawl in the trailer.

* Barricade is distracted by a two prong attack and gets destroyed by humans.

* Megatron confronts Sam with his arm canon on the rooftops. Optimus grabs him and they fall to the ground with Megatron in pursuit.

* Optimus rolls and fires at Megatron, his arm morphing into his gun. He digs his legs into the side of the building to slow his fall.

* On the ground, Optimus realizes Sam was ready to give his life to protect the All Spark. Megatron leans in claming the cube as his own. Optimus does leg sweep, knocking Megatron backwards. He begs Sam to aim the cube at his spark. He's ready to sacrifice himself to stop Megatron. Sam starts running up Optimus, and at the last minute, aims for Megatron who stumbles, sparks all over and falls.

* Starscream shrieks and takes off into the sky to escape.

* Optimus says Megatron gave him no choice.

* Next day at school, Mikala blows off jock who treated her bad, showing she's a car geek. She meets with Sam, who's accompanied by Bumblebee who's playing "All By Myself" until she shows. They kiss, as Bumblebee plays Aerosmith's Young Lust.

* Fallout from the government:

Damn, I can't wait to see this movie!

This part does seem a bit cheesy though:

[spoil] All Spark falls to the ground, triggering a massive shockwave that causes all the electronic devices in the area to come to life.
[/spoil]

But the Allspark cube obviously shares the same function as the Creation Matrix in the comic books and Vector Sigma in the cartoon and that's to create new Transformer life. So it makes sense at least.

Also this confirms the rumor that Frenzy takes on a second form other than the stereo boombox.

If you go to any bookstore, they have kid friendly books that summarize the whole movie with coloring pages etc.

I understand the need for filmakers to modernize the property and do things to make it look more realistic on the big screen. And then there are egotistical filmakers that change things just for the sake of change.

Michael Bay has always been great at making movie trailers, and horrible at making movies. I don't see why that trend would change now.

Dude, I don't think we're that hard up for spoilers to have to rumage through kiddie coloring books for news!

Anyways, AICN has the first REVIEW up now:

[spoil]
[align=left]Background: I was born ass-end of the 70s (this is going somewhere I promise) so hit the Transformers toy craze at the perfect age (see). Loved the cartoon, toys and 86 movie at the time but haven't revisited them as an adult. My trepidation of seeing a live action movie of Transformers did not come from a flames on Optimus/Bumblebee's not a VW bug stand point but just from a who the hell gives a rat's ass stand point. Michael Bay, meh, liked Rock and Bad Boys, hated Armageddon, laughed my ass off through Pearl Harbor (I expect not the intended reaction) so wasn't really bothered either way by him.

But I think my biggest issue was fogy syndrome. I have started to think I'm getting too old to enjoy cinematic lunacy fully. I was bored by 300, found myself complaining about characterisation in Spider-Man 3 and X-Men 3 (can't believe that would even have occurred to me as a kid) and was stunned that even Johnny Depp did nothing forme in Pirates 3. I wondered whether it was all the constant CG, that I yearned for the good old days of the Schwarzenegger 80s! When life was simpler. I felt this might have been confirmed when the John Rambo trailer got me as excited as a school kid two weeks ago.

Transformers proved me wrong. Characterization? - Where? CG? - Everywhere! But I really enjoyed it. It made me feel like I was 10 years old again. I don't think a summer movie has made me feel that way since The Matrix.

Let me elaborate. I will not lie to you, is Transformers a great movie, brilliantly written, completely devoid of a feeling of big-screen toy-advertisement? No, it isn't.

Are all the robots a great design? Well, this will split people I'm sure but Megatron sucks for sure. Have they picked great actors doing it for the art? Ha, Turturro's manicness and Voight's phoning in leave you with a sense of them dancing around their paychecks off screen with glee.

There's also this little robot (kind of the equivalent of Ravage and Laserbeak in the cartoon) that is played for comic effect that is incredibly irritating. But somehow - maybe because I had no expectations and with so maybe sequels these days expectations are hard to silence - I got past all these flaws and just enjoyed it for the sheer entertainment. And damn is it entertaining.

The film wastes no time getting down to business. That much touted helicopter transformation that trashes the army base present in some sense since the first trailer is the first scene of the whole film. In fact it moves back and forth between kick ass action (usually involving army guys and Decepticons) and the "human" story (Shia, Megan) nicely for the first 40 minutes or so.

The film has nods to the cartoon (a VW bug sitting next to Bumblebee in the used-car lot, the corny more than meets the eye line comes up at least twice, the cartoon transforming noise is in there) but is mostly its own thing.

The "human" more comedic side is actually pretty good. Often these days films can't get the balance of these things and they feel forced in and just make you wish they'd get back to big fuck-off robots battling (which is why we're there anyway). I think the reason they get away with it is LaBeouf. I had only seen him in Holes and Bobby prior to this and hadn't understood why there was such a buzz on him but his comic-timing is superb. He is just so effortlessly likeable. It's like Tom Hanks in Big, Will Smith in Independence Day, Michael J Fox in Back to The Future, he's effortless and gives a great performance.
And the reason I think this is why these bits work is simple: it's not the script - I know this because there's also another "human" story involving "sleeping throught the movie" Jon Voight and a bunch of tech geeks. And these bits are painful.

There's this one Aussie actress (if she warrants the term actress) who is almost as wooden as Keira Knightley. None of the actors in this section can do anything with the banal dialogue they are given, they simply don't have the talent. Thankfully there's not much of them. Shia just brings the whole thing to life, he is a true joy to watch and i look forward to other films he's in. Megan Fox is of course also in most of his scenes and she's fine. She is not bad at all and she's gorgeous but any reasonable actress her age could have done just as well. Shia is working on another level from those around him.

The print I saw had no score just temp tracks from The Rock, American Beauty and something else I couldn't place. I hope the real score is great because the American Beauty bits (which kicked in everytime Megan and Shia appeared on their own) were really distracting.

But what you want to know is robots, right? We've all seen the designs and for me they work fine. They are a bit busy but they have a sense of the real to them. Realism no. This is a movie about giant fuck-off robots, there's no room for realism but in a way they make sense, it feels right that they are what they are. As for what the Transform into, this is explained away in a Bumblebee scene when we see him as a beat up car scan another car and instantly upgrade to look bad new. The reason he's not a VW? That's not what he scanned. So essentially all these robots could become anything. The only thing they never really explain is why all the Decepticons seem to be able to fly while none of the Autobots can. Maybe, they just don't chose to.

The thing on here the other day about the trailer with Bumblebee's voice - not Bumblebee's voice. Bumblebee doesn't talk - his voice unit was damaged in a war - and he communicates through his radio. Peter Cullen is great as Optimus Prime but, maybe it's just me, but he didn't sound much like he did in the cartoon. I don't know why they bothered getting Hugo Weaving in for Megatron. For a start Megatron's barely in the film - he's in maybe the last 20 minutes - and it could be anyone voicing.

The thing that really had me awed though is the transformations. When one of the robots transforms mid movement is looks incredible. Barricade (a Decepticon police cruiser) is first to do it, chasing Bumblebee and Shia in robot form and transforming into his car form in mid-stride. There are more instances in the non-stop action finale - the best of them being Starscream mif-flight transformation to land in robot form and enter a fray. These are the moments that really took me, that transported me back into my 10-year-old self. I got so excited by it. As I say I probably haven't been genuinely excited by watching a blockbuster since The Matrix. It was a feeling I remember having for Jedi as a kid, Batman and T2 as a teenager.

I'm not saying Transformers is as good as T2 but it was a real surprise. It has plot weaknesses and some shakey performances but it is hugely entertaining both in the frequent battle set pieces, whether human vs robot or robot vs robot, and in the Shia LaBeouf moments. Even some of the comedy (Optimus trying to hide behind a house he's twice the size of) worked for me (although my friend this scene a little over the top). But that's just it, like the first Pirates movie it is the over-the-topness combined with great set pieces and superb special effects that make it so enjoyable and help you see past the flaws. I'm sure those more invested in the 80s show will have issues with things I either didn't notice or don't get (why is flames on Optimus a big deal? - though I get the Optimus mouth thing, that was weird) but then that's like comic-book movies to me, I never read them so I don't care if Venom's a great or sucky character in Spider-Man I just want to be entertained for a couple of hours.

Transformers did that for me. Best of this years crop so far (not that the disappointing Spider-Man 3, dull At World's End or abyssmal Shrek the Third set the bar high mind you!) by a long way.

Damn... that one of Bonecrusher and Prime going off the freeway definitely looked awesome as hell. I can only imagine how much cooler it will be in theaters.

As much as I love what I'm seeing, I only hope that the whole movie is like this, and we're not just seeing the "good parts". After seeing the MTV Movie Awards last night, I'm still not comfortable with the whole OP Lips thing.

Dinobots & Constructicons in Transformers 2? Interview with Tom DeSanto.

Quote:
“It is really gratifying that as an old school Transformers fan and after almost six years of work the movie is just over a month away from live action big screen immortality. Like X-Men and Battlestar Galactica this is a project I have wanted to see made since I was a kid. As a huge Grimlock lover myself there was just no room in the first movie for the Dinobots, we had to focus on the original Transformers with Optimus Prime and Megatron. But if the box office allows us to make a sequel, the door is open to a lot of the Transformers universe. I have a very cool idea on how to intro the Dinobots and Constructicons. How cool would that movie be?”

Yeah, that song is definite cheese which will probably (and hopefully) be played during the credits.

Didn't they break up or something, so Billy could pursue his new band?

If I remember correctly, Billy ended the band at the time because he said and wrote everything he needed to say or write. Who knows?

But what I do know is that soon as this soundtrack becomes available, I want it!
