Quote:
Welcome to Baghdad. An Iraqi reporter set off pandemonium Sunday by hurling two shoes at President Bush during a news conference that was the centerpiece of his secret goodbye visit.

Bush was cool under fire and prevented an even bigger incident by waving off his lead Secret Service agent, who was prepared to extract him from the room.

Video shows the president's lead agent rushing to the podium, but the president immediately and subtly motions to him that it's OK. The agent backs off.

The president successfully ducked both throws. Photos show him with his head down near the top of the podium. The embarrassing incident marred a visit meant to show off the improved conditions since the troop "surge" dramatically reduced casualties to U.S. troops.

"This is a gift from the Iraqis. This is the farewell kiss, you dog," the journalist shouted (in Arabic), Steven Lee Myers of The New York Times reported in a pool report to the White House press corps.

Myers reported that the man threw the second shoe and added: "This is from the widows, the orphans and those who were killed in Iraq."

the man wasn't arrested over there. If some southern white boy did that in the States, he'd be in Guantanamo Bay before sundown.

Obviously, journalists over there get their aim training from stormtroopers.

Outraged over the colonization of their homeland by the Great Satan, Iraqis fight back the only way they know how: throwing shoes (and missing).

mysteriously, the man has a broken arm and ribs now. Strange, he must've slipped on the sand outside.

I think it's rather telling that a lot (majority?) of Americans could give a rat's ass and think this is funny. But if this were a popular leader, and those shoes were actually weaponized in some fashion, things would be different. It's pretty funny to me that most everyone I've spoken with about this incident feels that if that's the worst thing that happens to him after his miserable and murderously inept decade-ish in office, he got off easy. And I can't argue that, but the sheer audacity of the act sets a tone for the future that will lead to bad news.

It's the implications of the security breach that really bother me. What does it say about the SS's coverage? What kind of changes will be made in light of this failure? Shoe #2 is going to get someone fired if it hasn't allready. The first one was a surprise, but I'm kind fo shocked he got the second one off without being ventilated.

I'll say this though, Bush sure is nimble. He ducked those shoes as skillfully as he's been ducking the Constitution and his Executive resposibilty to the nation.

Good job. Dork.

Yeah, we've all see Robot Chicken...

I've heard that the SS was actually outside the room. Since everyone was "cleared" to be in there without weapons, and Iraqi security was there, the presence was minimized. I'm not one to believe that, unless they're really trying to get the guy killed before January 21st.

Nah, watch right after the first shoe is thrown. There's an agent who runs up to the president, who proceeds to wave him off.

Kind of like Vader holding down Boba Fett... :?

Except in this version, George's propensity for CGI makes the shoe trajectory just a bit too implausible, hence the whole scene is emotionally vapid ...
