Of course I know it's because of the drama, but the countdown itself isn't that importat. Cause we do see how the moon of Yavin moves closer to the firing range on the same screen without the numbers counting down.

And it's so easily fixed! Look at the computer screen on Anakins Pod Racer in Ep 1. Nobody knows what all those signs means, but by colours and a lot of twinkeling shit going on, we know what is happeing (even though we never wanted to see it happen anyway).
