And I'm having trouble paying off student loans from the local community college.

While some may snicker at the rense.com link, this is allegedly a direct reprint of a WSJ editorial, if that means anything to you.

it's fucked up this guy advocated and defended the destruction of a 1500 year old piece of buddhist/human/world history and now attends one of the most prestigious schools in the US. taking up the spot of a promising student. a spot to be occupied by someone who has the sense to understand how offensive it was to dynamite these statues that had stood for ages. yale should celebrate achievement both past and present but embraces this moron. that this fuck ass whose ilk acted to remove a lasting window into our past is on our soil is a humiliation.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.

A recent University of North Carolina graduate was charged with nine counts of attempted murder Saturday, a day after authorities say he drove through a popular campus gathering spot in an attempt to avenge Muslim deaths.

Derek Poarch, chief of the university police department, confirmed Saturday that Mohammed Reza Taheri-azar, a 22-year-old Iran native, told investigators he wanted to "avenge the deaths or murders of Muslims around the world." Poarch would not provide any other details on the motive.

...

Taheri-azar told police Friday that they would find things inside his apartment in nearby Carrboro that would shed light on his motives, Poarch said. The State Bureau of Investigation searched the apartment with a bomb squad, but Poarch said they didn't find anything dangerous.

Poarch declined to offer any additional details about what police found in the apartment but said Taheri-azar's roommates have cooperated and are not suspects.

"There is no indication whatsoever that he acted in any way other than alone," Poarch said.

The reference to a NY Times feature is correct as well.

However...

This is taking the obsession that U.S. universities have with promoting diversity a bit too far.

That's self-serving bullshit. This guy couldn't have gotten into the country without the federal government's approval, and given their willingness to lock up suspected terrorists in Gitmo and throw away the key, I have to figure that this guy passed whatever security checks he was subjected to.

You either stand for something or you don't, and Yale University is in no way answerable for their policies to some right-wing jackass from the Wall Street Journal.

Um, but it's an editorial, so my understanding is thats it's supposed to be self serving, to illustrate the opinion of the author. I don't neccesarily agree with him. I only pointed out the WSJ origin to pre-emptively deflect any criticism from those who would consider anything from rense as illegitimate.

I just find it odd that the overall stance taken by the feds has been that ANYONE associated with the Taliban was an enemy, and here thier former spokesman is at the alma matter of BOTH the candidates in the last US presidential election. He may be a decent guy legitimately trying to get a decent education. Too bad he couldn't have gotten one in Afghanistan. I'll bet there are folks there who would like the same opportunity, just as there are people here who would like to attend a more resourceful school.

The whole thing is just fucking strange. Thats why it's in the news and thats why I posted it. I don't think I've formed, or decided to actually get around to forming, my own opinion about it yet.
