[Months into development] they met with Lucas – who drastically altered the game’s intended design to pair Darth Maul with female Sith Lord, Darth Talon.

After two weeks of unanswered calls to LucasArts, the project was suddenly scrapped by their now-defunct publisher.

This basically echoes the expose on 1313. Lucas and his management team bungled another project. It's disappointing to once again see the work and talent behind it just thrown away.

I'm not sure "bungled" is the right word. These were just two projects that were in progress when the Disney sale took place.
Maybe some of the design work will be seen in some other form someday?

Why do people keep blaming Lucas for wanting his games, based on the IP he created and owned, to have the story he wants? All the story changes, in terms of game development, is assets. The engine remains the same, so do animations, scripts and the like.

Anyone who defends Lucas' chronic unannounced meddling doesn't know the first thing about game design.

It's not a defense....it was his property to do with what he wanted to, when he wanted to.

This isn't a defense, this is an immutable fact.

Would you be happy if someone came and told you what to do with your house? We may not like it, but he let us live in his world, we should be happy with that.

I know someone who worked at LucasArts for several years and he talked about how dysfunctional the entire organization was. The story group at Lucasfilm would keep LucasArts completely in the dark on continuity and the ONLY person with final say on matters was George.

One story that stood out had to do with the look of General Grievous in Republic Commando. The game design of GG was based on early concept art so the team took some liberties to fill in the missing pieces. Someone from ILM eventually saw GG in-game and pointed out the problems and gave them the updated design. When George saw the "revised" and "correct" GG design, he made the game team change it back (because he "liked it better" that day). There was no "continuity team" like there is now at Disney to make sure shit is straight and doesn't require A SINGLE PERSON to oversee hundreds of products to assure quality.

Yes, it was George's company and yes it was George's decision to do what he wants with his IP. But that doesn't make him right and it doesn't excuse dysfunction. Do you know what happens when you hire great people to work at a company and they eventually learn that management is incompetent? They leave. That's why this kind of shit happened - lack of "A" talent and tons of "C" people at management.

Oh, I quite understand mis-management. Which is why it's important in all areas, except in cases where the IP is the chief money maker.

We made George. We gave him license and empowered him to do whatever he wanted, we just kept buying it.

And now, it's not his IP. And LucasArts is a moot point, it's kaput, along with 90% of the rest of Lucas' staff, now that Disney has firmly brought it into the family.

I guess that George didnt understand the making of a game. Thats why he involved himself into things for some changes and then steped out. He was handling it like movie or TV show, like his scripts or his editings he kept working and working on and changed them around. He didnt understand that this wasnt working out for making a game which needs to be planned out in advance because the programm teams needs direction for gameplay and stuff.

U can blame GL to certain degree but it was the lack of telling me how it game development worked that kept him doing so. Surley that was because they were afraid to loose their jobs but its no excuse.

George was surrounded by yes-men at management positions. LFL and LA had lots of great people telling George how to do things right, but people in charge suppressed that type of chatter. It was a poorly run company. The best thing that could ever happen to Star Wars was Disney acquiring it.

It's a miracle that Clone Wars turned out as well as it did, and I credit Dave Filoni for having the creative and interpersonal chops to push quality through the pipe under those sorts of conditions. He's probably the most influential creative to win George's trust in 25 years.
