I don't know someone has done such a thread yet (myself included, I have bad memory..), but what the hell.... At first, it might sound odd to think that the Hero's Journey is in Revenge of the Sith, considering the hero falls. But, the structure is there in general. You have to manipulate a little, but the important, and interesting part, is that Anakin's journey is to become a Sith Lord... DEPARTURE CALL TO ADVENTURE I'd say this starts with the Opera scene, when Palpatine lets Anakin know how he can save Padme. But, you could go as far to say it's as early when Palpatine introduces Anakin to the advantages of the Dark Side by having him execute Dooku (a stretch), you could say it's when Anakin has his dream of Padme dying (not much of a stretch). REFUSAL TO THE CALL If this film weren't a tragedy, and Anakin engaged on a successful Hero's Journey, his refusal of the call, refusal of Sidious' aid in saving Padme's life would've been a very different part of his journey. He would've gone and tattle taled to Mace, maybe shown up at the arrest anyway, and instead of cutting off Mace's hand, he would've overcome his demons, and chopped Palpy to bits. It would've made a pretty fun and exciting story. But that's not the structure we're looking at. The refusal to the call is obviously when Anakin finds out Sidious' identity, and at this point in time, while very much conflicted, turns him in. SUPERNATURAL AID Obviously, Palpatine is the aid on this journey, that's pretty apparent. CROSSING OF THE FIRST THRESHOLD Cutting off Mace's hand and pledging his allegiance to Palpatine. THE BELLY OF THE WHALE Now that Anakin has pledged himself, he gets to follow his journey towards the Dark Side. INITIATION THE ROAD OF TRIALS Anakin does as his new Master tells him and he embarks on two slaughters. Obviously there is still duality within him (pained expression in the Jedi Temple, crying scene on the balcony of Mustafar). But, oh whoops, turns out he kind of likes killing innocent people (he's having a ball while kicking Seperatist ass) and he loves feeling all powerful! MEETING WITH THE GODDESS AND WOMAN AS TEMPTRESS Here is where ROTS puts its biggest spin on the journey. And admittedly, I find I can't really keep up with Campbell in these chapters and he totally loses me. So maybe I'm not reading these parts right. But anyway, rather than joining with the Goddess and becoming one with her, he splits. And Padme as "temptress" is to tempt him back to the good side, away from the dark side. If anything, this truly shows that the Dark Side, in ROTS, is the path Anakin is destined to take, it is his journey to fall. ATONEMENT WITH THE FATHER Battle with Obi-Wan. Again, doesn't really work out like the average Hero's Journey. RETURN Campbell's Return section is a little too long to apply to film, so now I turn to Christopher Vogler's book "The Writer's Journey" REWARD/SEIZING THE SWORD He has embraced the Dark Side. He has given up his soul and his body for it, but he is now a Sith. RESURRECTION Good old Palpy comes just in time for Anakin, paving way for his rebirth as Darth Vader RETURN WITH THE ELIXIR Vader now has the power of the Sith. He can bring peace to the Galaxy using whatever means he wants. He can do what Anakin has always wanted, the thing that turned Anakin to a Sith in the first place - to do whatever it takes to accomplish what he desires. It's there, and I have to say I think that's why Revenge of the Sith works so well. Any movie that applies Joseph Campbell's structure to it is off to a good start, and likely to ring true with audience's, as I think Campbell proved that all humans for one reason or another, accept this structure as the way to tell stories. |

very interesting considering you can eother apply this strucure to one episode or to the saga as a whole. I think as a whole it follows it much more closely |
