If George had decided to go the whole hog after Return of the Jedi and release The Phantom Menace in 1986, Attack of the Clones in 1989 and Revenge of the Sith in 1992 (with the same storylines) who do you think would have played some of the major roles?

Course some actors would be the same (Frank Oz as Yoda, Ian Mc Diarmid as Palpatine/Sidious, Christopher Lee as Count Dooku) but what about young Obi Wan Kenobi, young and adult Anakin Skywalker, Padme Amidala, Qui Gonn Jinn, Mace Windu, Jango Fett, Darth Maul, Bail Organa etc ?

Ill throw my hat in the air for some of the more obvious:

Obi Wan Kenobi: Kenneth Branagh
Young Anakin: River Phoenix

Thats just me, and what about the rest? Discuss!

I just watched Indy and the Last Crusade and I have to say River Phoenix would have made a great Anakin.

Eddie Murphy might not have been so bad as Jar Jar Binks (as much as i loath the chr) as I enjoy his 80s films - plus you could practically imagine him practically doing Donkey from Shrek as his interpretation.

Ok. For Padme Amidala - howsabout Jennifer Connelly?
Same age as River Phoenix (both born in 1970) and was also used in another Lucasfilm flick - Labyrinth.

Mace Windu: I didnt realise how old Samuel L Jackson is and that he was quite capable of portraying him in the mid eighties - however he was an unknown at the time. So maybe blaxpoitation star - the original Shaft: Richard Roundtree instead?

Actually on second thoughts maybe Arsenio Hall might have been more realistic as the rastafarian alien we all love to hate?

And Qui Gonn Jinn - Sean Connery perhaps? Did a similiar role in Highlander and was used by Lucasfilm in The Last Crusade also...

It's hard to say how different the prequels would have looked if made back then.

Most likely no CG Yoda, Gungans/Jar Jar, Yoda vs Dooku, Geonosis arena, Clone Wars or Pod Race as you know them...All in All SW without CG sounds promising.

Alot of people think the prequels are shit with CG DKR.

I don't think they are total shit, but they are inferior to the OT not in effects...but script, plot and editing which the effects had a hand in influencing.

I agree, Tim, but DKR has a point about the -

use of primitive poop 1996-7 CGI

-which you know Lucas would have tried to really exploit and we would have ended up with a whole film of characters around the standard of the SE Jabba. That would have made things so much worse.

Personally I don't think that the prequels would have been any better done back in the day simply because Lucas seemed to be losing interest in Star Wars altogether. He originally had this grand vision for an epic and just seemed to lose the motivation and focus, although I think that is much the same now...

Possibly Donald Sutherland or Christopher Walken as Qui-Gon Jinn? I have no problems with Kenneth Branagh as Obi-Wan. I've only ever seen River Phoenix in 'SNEAKERS,' and so, I don't personally know how good his range was. Though, just for kicks, Isaac Hayes as Mace Windu. You wouldn't have to alter a line of Sam Jackson's dialogue either. Imagine Isaac spouting out the line, "This party's over."

Christian Slater as Annakin would be interesting. Hehehe... then we could have Jack Nicholson as Count Dooku! Hehehe... One Flew Over the Dooku's Nest!
